Light of the World Clinic Luz Del Mundo - Light of the World Clinic was founded in 1989 by Erwin Vasquez, M.D. along with a small group of Hispanic physicians. The Clinic provides free quality essential health care and preventative supportive medical services to the disadvantaged, underserved, uninsured and at-risk indigent men, women and children who are ineligible to receive government medical benefits in Broward County, Florida. Operating 6 days a week, the Clinic provides a full range of medical services through multi-lingual volunteer and licensed medical professionals doctors, nurses, medical personnel in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Creole. The Clinic offers over 15 successful programs including school integration for immigrants, one-to-one health screening, medical treatment and prevention education with Free prescription medication and immunizations when available. Services include: Cardiology, Dentistry referral, Dermatology and Dermatological Surgery, Diabetic Counseling & Education, General Medicine, Gynecology, Healthy Hearts/Healthy Lifestyles Program, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Nutrition, Pediatrics, Psychology, Social Service Outreach, Women's Healthcare, and Spiritual Support (through a number of other faith based programs). Luz Del Mundo is the only free healthcare clinic in Broward County, Florida, as reported in the 2007-2008 Annual Report of the Florida Dept of Health, annually serving over 10,000 indigent people living at or below the designated federal poverty levels. The Clinic is approved and licensed as a countywide provider of Social Services by the Broward County Department of Health, and meets or exceeds all on-site and records inspections. We are proud of our student/intern program with Florida Atlantic University, Barry University, Nova Southeastern University, Broward College, the University of Miami and others where hundreds of medical students participate along with a physician or trained healthcare professional to better understand compassionate care, diversity and culture. These students also volunteer their time to assist at health fairs, festivals and special projects. Based on the current economic environment and the many individuals and families out of work, the inability to continue Cobra or pay for health insurance, or be eligible to receive government benefits, the Clinic is experiencing an increase in requests for free health care. The citizens of Broward County and the State of Florida benefit because these individuals and their families who come to the Clinic for free services do not enter the public health facilities and emergency rooms and thus save taxpayers millions of dollars each year. Noche Tropical We plan to distribute this program to healthcare facilities, elected and appointed officials, medical suppliers, numerous pharmaceutical companies, our benefactors and to the Broward County Medical Association mailing list. Programs will also be distributed at the 20th annual Noche Tropical black-tie gala and charity auction on Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina. Here s an opportunity to say thank you to our scores of volunteers who unselfishly give up their time and resources to help thousands of men, women and children each year.
