Introduction to IEEE / IEEE PES Swiss chapter of IEEE PES and the Workshop Klaus-Peter Brand Chair of the Swiss Chapter of IEEE PES
IEEE as Professional Organization The IEEE, a non-profit organization, is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Through its global membership, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics among others.
IEEE Members and Activities The IEEE has:» more than 365,000 members, including 68,000 students, in over 150 countries.» 311 sections in ten geographic regions worldwide.» about 1,570 chapters that unite local members with similar technical interests.» more than 1,430 student branches at colleges and universities in 80 countries.» 39 societies and 5 technical councils representing the wide range of technical interests.» 128 transactions, journals and magazines.» more than 300 conferences worldwide each year.» about 900 active IEEE standards and more than 400 in development.
IEEE Vision & Mission Vision To advance global prosperity by fostering technological innovation, enabling members' careers and promoting community worldwide. Mission The IEEE promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession.
IEEE PES Mission Statement Mission To be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society, and the preferred professional development source for our members
Chapters of IEEE PES IEEE PES has about 160 local chapters world-wide. These chapters are the base organization of the Power Engineering Society and serve directly the technical, scientific and professional needs of its members. Included are continuing education and publications. In performing local activities, the local chapters support the global IEEE PES to fulfill its tasks. Chapter activities may include guest speakers, workshops, and seminars as well as social functions. Chapters provide society members with valuable opportunities to network at a local level - enabling both personal and professional growth.
The Swiss Chapter of IEEE PES The Swiss Chapters of IEEE PES (about 100 members) provides a platform for power engineers in Switzerland to participate on the international progress of power systems to participate and to contribute. The Swiss Chapter of IEEE PES is member of the Swiss Section of IEEE (about 2000 members). By its short Mission Global Facts, Trends and Visions in Power Industry, the Swiss Chapter of IEEE PES competes not national organizations but complements it by a window to the global world.

Blackout in Europe in Saturday Night November 4, 2006 German utility provider E.ON said early investigations suggested the supply failures were caused by overloads in the power network in northwest of the country, according to Reuters. E.ON said the power failures may have been linked to a line across a river being switched off to allow a ship to pass through safely, Reuters reported.
