The book focuses on the key military leaders including George Washington, Philip Schuyler, Charles Lee, and Horatio Gates. It also develops the story of the war within the context of the Atlantic world by examining the situation that led various European officers and adventurers to cross the ocean and join the American cause. A Thoroughly Modern Man: Robert Morris and Revolutionary America. After completing Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, it became apparent that Robert Morris of Pennsylvania was Lee s primary nemesis in Congress. In this study, Morris takes center stage and the events involving Congress, the War for American Independence, and the founding of the United States are examined from his perspective. Morris and his allies, in contrast to Lee, remained firmly committed to maintaining transatlantic ties and fought hard to maintain the commercial integrity of the Atlantic community in the late eighteenth
century. At the same time Morris interfered with General Washington s command of the Continental Army and repeatedly attempted to manipulate military affairs to his advantage.
