March 4, 1977 THREE NEW DEPARTMENT Three new department heads have been appointed for the 1977- CHAIRMEN ANNOUNCED 78 academic year, President John M. Pfau has announced. Serving as next year's History Chairman will be Kent M, Schofield, Professor of History and, until this year. Associate Dean of Academic Planning, a position he held for four years. Dr. Schofield has been on the CSCSB faculty since 1966. In addition to his teaching and work In academic planning, be has served as administrative secretary to the School of Social Sciences, for three years as a representative to the Statewide Academic Senate of the CSUC and as a member of numerous other faculty committees. A native of San Bernardino, Dr. Schofield earned an AA.from San Bernardino Valley College, ab.alfrom UCR, a M.A. from Claremont Graduate School. Following obtaining his Ph.D. from UCR, he was Assistant Professor at Harvey Mudd College In Claremont, prior to coming to CSCSB. Ruth Wilson, Associate Professor, Biology, another California native, will head the Department of Biology next year. Coming from Lancaster, Dr. Wilson graduated from Antelope Valley High School and Junior College and received her B.A. and M.A. In Biology from Cal State, LA. She also holds a Ph.D. In Botany from Claremont Graduate School. Following five years teaching at Cal State, LA, she joined the CSCSB faculty In Fall, 1971. Her research Interest Is ecology of plants and she Is the author of numerous publications dealing with native chaparral and plants of California. Frances Berdan, Assistant Professor, Anthropology, will serve as Chairman of the Department of Anthropology, effective with the next academic year. She is co-author of a book, published last year by University of California Press, dealing with Indian life in Colonial Mexico and numerous articles on Aztec culture and society. Prior to her teaching appointment at CSCSB she taught at the University of Texas and served as an assistant on the Texas Archaeological Salvage project. At CSCSB she was a member of the Faculty Senate for two years and a member of the College Center for General Education. Chamber Orchestra Conc^t. Kehoe, Jr., U.S. Navy, will be the guest speaker in Richard Ackley's American Foreign Policy class at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, in LC-5. Capt. Kehoe, a specialist in Soviet ship design, will deliver a slide presentation comparing U.S. and Soviet warships in general and on the new Soviet aircraft carrier KIEV in particular, emphasizing military capabilities and limitations in supporting foreign policy. MENTAL HOSPITALIZATION TALK - A talk,"labeling Madness," covering the effects of public and professional attitudes on the behavior of mental patients will be presented by sociologist-author Thomas Scheff on campus Wednesday evening, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the Lower Commons. Dr. Scheff's presentation deals with how mental hospitalization can lead to a "career of madness" and that reactions to social deviance may contribute to and stabilize the deviation. The sociologist is well-known as a consultant for legislative and mental health committees and is the author of two books dealing with mental illness.
