December 2017 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 13 2017 Honorary Membership Awards Dr. Thomas Kaye Muskegon Oakridge Dr. Kaye has been the team physician for over 22 years. During this time period he has been to almost every single game. He has always made time to see the athletes in the early morning or between his patients or on his lunch period. Dr. Kaye has provided his time in giving sports physicals to all our players and has been kind enough to always donated the money back to the football program. Jim Nichol Deckerville Jim Nichol is being nominated for his 30 years of dedication to the Deckerville football program. Jim has taken care of the football field over the last 30 years making it one of the best fields in the state to play on. Jim also takes care of our football field house and weight room. The amazing part is most of this work is done well after normal work hours of the average person. Jim can be found as late as 11:00 p.m. working in the field house or as early as 5:00 a.m. working on the field. We truly appreciate everything Jim does and he is to us more than deserving of this award. Mark Stuart Frankfort Mark Stuart has been the head of our chain gang crew for the last 20 years and counting. He was recruited in 1998 when a new coach was hired in 1998 and has not missed a season or game since. Mark has also taken responsibility of organizing the chain gangs to cover all J.V. and Varsity games. He has done this on his own without ever being recognized for his efforts or drawing attention himself. Mark is very professional and officials have commented on the professionalism of our chain gang every year. Paul Valentine Mayville Paul Valentine started working on the Mayville Football Chain Gang in the fall of 1997. He has been the member since 2001. During his time as a member, he has found others to help work on the chain gang and organized replacements when his regular members could not be there for a night. Our School doesn t have a huge budget, knowing this, Paul has spent his own money to help fix the chains so that they work properly. He has been a dedicated member of our football community and we hope he stays for another 20 years. Frank Wozny Walled Lake Western Frank Wozny has been with the Walled Lake West football program since 2002. He runs a weightlifting event called squat fest with medals for individuals and team. December 2017 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 20 Guide to Securing Your Child s Credit Future Courtesy of Reviews.com t s no secret that the American culture has money problems, but more specifically credit problems. Consider the following statistics: every three months, 250,000 new families enter into foreclosure, and the average family has $16,000 in credit card debt. One reason American s poor relationship with credit may be that many states educational systems aren t great at producing financially literate graduates. That s why we created this guide to empower parents with a helpful step by step process that will provide them the tools they need to ensure that their children develop a healthy relationship with credit, and understand financial literacy by the time they graduate. While this guide is a great resource for everyone, it can be particularly useful for parents who don t feel qualified to teach their children credit-related concepts whether that feeling comes from personal struggles with debt, a lack of aptitude for grasping difficult financial concepts, or a simple lack of education on these subjects. Regardless of a parent s relationship with credit, there s a lot they can and should teach their children. Just because children aren t going to be directly interacting with personal credit or financial products until they graduate high school, doesn t mean that parents have to wait until then to prepare for their child s credit future. Young children can be helped to form sound financial habits, and as they get older, they can be educated about Guide to Securing Your College Student s Credit Future ollege students don t always have a healthy relationship with credit. For instance, Stephen Swift (managing attorney for Southern Colorado Bankruptcy Law Firm) relates that bankruptcy attorneys are seeing younger and younger clients who are seeking bankruptcy protection because they got in over their heads with credit cards. Unfortunately, credit cards aren t the only concern for students in 2015, the average college student graduated with $30,100 in student loan debt; in 2016, 11.2 percent of student loan debt was in default or delinquent by 90+ days. Even more, the student loan situation is getting worse, not better. In 2005, the average student loan payment was $227 (when adjusted for inflation) 10 years later, the average payment was 50 percent higher ($351). A recent study conducted by Sallie Mae highlighted some concerning statistics regarding the behavior and understanding of college students as it relates to credit cards. increasingly complex credit-related concepts. This guide will help parents understand how to promote positive credit awareness and responsible financial habits throughout a child s development. Important concepts and behaviors will be highlighted, and examples of activities and additional resources will be given to use in four critical stages of development. The four stages of development used in this guide are: Preschool and Early Elementary (Ages 4-6) Elementary (Ages 7-10) Middle School and Jr. High (Ages 11-13) High School (Ages 14-18) Overall, this guide identifies four primary ways for parents to prepare for their children s credit future: Habit Forming: Helping children to form solid financial habits Education: Ensuring that children understand critical concepts regarding credit and debt before graduation Fraud Protection: Protecting children by teaching them to avoid identity theft through proper handling of personal information and how to steer clear of financial frauds Credit Building: Developing a plan to establish credit history for children before they graduate The complete Financial Guide can be accessed on the web at https://www.thesimpledollar.com/guide-to-securing-yourchilds-credit-future/ Courtesy of Reviews.com 35 percent of students use their credit cards sometimes or regularly to make purchases that they don t have the money to pay off. Older students (21 to 24 year-olds) have an average balance of over $1,000 on their credit cards. Only 31% of college students demonstrated that they have a working knowledge of basic credit-related concepts. Only a slim percentage could answer all three questions that relate to interest accumulation, the effect that payment behavior has on the cost of credit, and the effect that the repayment term has on the cost of credit. Where Parents Fit In: Some parents may assume that their students will learn proper credit habits and financial behavior in college, but that assumption may not be correct. In fact, 71 percent of college students say they learned money management from their parents, and the percentage is higher (81%) for younger students. Only 12 percent indicated that they learned about financial management from a college course.
