June 1, 2014 Mission Statement St. Aloysius Parish embraces and nurtures all, inspiring each to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly in the love of God. The Ascension of the Lord

Dearly Beloved Sisters and Brothers, ETCETERA... With the Memorial Day Weekend, summer has unofficially begun. Most important events have happened: first communions, graduations, etc. (Well, the bishop still has some confirmations, as well as ordinations, to do. His schedule doesn't slow down for a while!). Things around St. Aloysius' have definitely slowed down. School is out. Mass attendance is smaller - people have gone to their summer houses in cooler climates, children to camps, families on vacation, etc. Which is a good thing for me! The side effects of my second chemo treatment were just as bad as the first, I managed to celebrate the graduation Mass on Wednesday, but was wiped out for the rest of the week. It s now Tuesday and I still don t have much energy. The irritating rash also reappeared, but this time I was prepared with adequate medicines so it wasn't as bad! Although I didn't know Sister Rosary personally, I join the parish community in mourning her death, knowing her spirit still lives in the minds and hearts of many. We dedicate a good portion of this bulletin to her life and work, to the wonderful memories of her ministry among us. Please take a moment this week to say a prayer for her. A couple of years ago, the staff took a day off to visit Angola Penitentiary. The visit had such an impact on me that I came back and asked MacDougall to build this social justice component into the confirmation program. I'm happy that this will become a reality this year, when the confirmation candidates will have the opportunity to see life on the other side, where a number of our parishioners minister. We ve advertised the position of Facilities Manager to take Ross place when he goes part-time. It s hard to find another Ross, but if you know someone good for this position please encourage him or her to apply. On the Mount of Olives, there is a walled field surrounded by people and Olive trees. In the middle of the field is a tower that Christians erected long ago to honor the sight where the Christ was ascended and to which they expect he will sooner or later return. A stone slab in the center of the tower is the spot where the Christ s foot last touched the earth. The Christians built the tower without a roof. Later the Muslims came and covered the tower. Whether the roof was to impede Christ s return or to protect the stonework, I don t know. What I do suspect is that Christ will, as Christ usually does, find a way in, roof or not. It doesn t seem to me he needs to return through that tower. He s been breaking through the locked doors of our lives, anywhere and anytime, for a long while now. That's the good news of the Ascension: Christ goes away so he can be even more present to us. No roof can prevent that, no lock can keep him out, no sins can keep him away. For 45 years (1957-2002) the Daughters of Jesus, a religious order of sisters, generously served St. Aloysius Parish in both the School and Church ministry. We were notified last week that Sr. Rosary Arocena, F.I., one of our beloved sisters, passed away. We pay tribute to Sister Rosary through her own words and some of the memories shared by parishioners. Sr. Rosary: In Her Own Words We were very happy and not homesick. We found the people at St. Aloysius very happy, very loving. They took us the way we were and we knew we were not that efficient! But they respected us and loved us. When someone loves you, cares for you, you think highly of them. I spent many years as a principal. It came to a point that I said, I am a teacher and I want to go back to the classroom. I was a principal for either 9 or 11 years. I don t know. I said, That s it. Somebody else has to take over. Sister Marina was a leader so she took over and it was not that hard for her. I entered the novitiate when I was nineteen. In my last year of high school when I was seventeen I made a retreat. I knew in that retreat that the Lord was calling. Since I was the oldest daughter and spent a lot of time helping my parents and was important to them, I did not want to tell them in person. Instead, I called them over the phone to say that the Lord was calling me to be a sister. The greatest joy of my life is to know that God is crazy about me. I believe that He loves me. He called Jesus my beloved son. I am His beloved daughter. To know that helps me tremendously to have respect. No matter how different someone is, God loves them. In 1954 we were told we were coming to New Orleans. I don t know why I was picked. Maybe because I knew some English. Also, the first nine years in the convent I lived with the Mother General so she knew me through and through. She had a good sense of humor and knew I could handle coming to the United States. Baton Rouge was then part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Father Becnel was looking for sisters to staff the new school he was opening. The Vicar General of New Orleans was a good friend of Father Becnel and told him we were finished and available and didn t have any other place to go. Father Becnel met us in the parlor, accepted us, and I was signed on as the principal. Seven sisters came to Baton Rouge at that time; two came to study at LSU and one came as a lay sister to do the cooking in the convent. We lived in the gray house on the corner of Mimosa. This understanding guided me as a principal and in school as a teacher. That idea we put forward in school and thank God, that philosophy prevails today. We have a principal that is just terrific and the teachers are out of this world. They love children. They are not here just to teach students. If they see a child is sad, they are concerned. I see both parish and school moving rapidly in the right direction. They are vibrant and alive. Sr. Mary Teresa still keeps in touch. If you would like to offer sympathy to her, the address is: Sr. Teresa Eceizabarrena Paseo Beloka, 22 20009 San Sebastian Espana (SPAIN) June 1, 2014 4 The Ascension of the Lord

Memories of Sister Rosary We received many comments about and memories of Sister Rosary. We have included as many as we could on this page. Sr. Rosary kept us all positive and made us feel loved. She is the gift that will keep giving. I will always hear her voice. Gay Hebert Sweet precious Sister Rosary. She and Sister Marina were my guides through the RCIA process. Every Easter I think of them with such fond memories. I can still here Sr. Rosary saying "Jesus is CRAZY about you!" She is with him face to face now! And with Sister Marina, Sr. Carmen and Sr. Josephine. Jeanie Bondy Sr. Rosary was such a special person whom we loved dearly. We really became close to her when we lived on Stuart Ave and she and Sr. Marina would walk by our house every afternoon. I will always remember her telling us when our first child was baptized that the bond of marriage comes first and holds the family together. Words to live by from such a loving person who touched our family in a special way. Susan Mathews I was a member of the first eighth grade class to ever graduate from St. Aloysius School in 1961. When the Daughters of Jesus arrived in Baton Rouge for the 1957-58 school year, Charles Barbre and I were in the fifth grade. Like many of our classmates Charles and I had attended Sacred Heart and St. Agnes Schools prior to the opening of St. Aloysius School. The Sisters of St. Joseph and the Domican nuns always went by the nomenclature of Sister. On the other hand the Daughters of Jesus, being connected with the Jesuit Order and originating in Spain and Brazil, initially went by the title of Mother. Early in the fall of 1957, ten-year-old Charles Barbre was called upon by Mother Rosary to answer a question, the answer of which he did not know. When Mother Rosary persisted in her unbelief, Charles panicked. He knew we should no longer use the term Sister, but the term Mother just would not resurrect in his mind. Instead he blurted out the phrase Mama, I just don t know. I don t know who laughed the hardest Mother Rosary or the rest of the class. Fr. Jerry Martin I remember her as our very-respected principal our 2 oldest daughters adopted grandmother a leader on our retreat in 7 th or 8 th grade. All of these Sisters were special to my mom, our family, our school, and our parish. They came not knowing English for the most part, and yet they were sort of ahead of their time in some ways. Mary T De Brueys Sister Rosary was so kind to my mother when she became a widow with three children at the age of 34. I always said the sisters raised me and my siblings and then they helped me raise my own children when they attended St. Aloysius. What an honor it was to have these beautiful women of God in our lives. As sad as I feel, I am rejoicing to know that she is in heaven with Our Lord Halleluia! Joanne Roberts Sister Rosary was a living angel working on Earth. I had the honor and blessing of working with her and Sr. Marina for almost 20 years in the RCIA. As she called herself Holy Rosary, she will never be forgotten. What a blessing to those who knew her. Rest in the Glory of God, Sister. Jose Barro Never got by Sr. Rosary without a heartfelt hug. She was a great influence on my life. Danny Atkinson June 1, 2014 5 The Ascension of the Lord

O great St. Peregrine, you have been called "The Mighty," "The Wonder-Worker," because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you. For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you, especially Fr. Than and the members of our families and Parish. Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy.
