The event to be held from April 25th to 28th, 2018 will feature a walking tour of the Iowa State University campus, educational seminars, a benefit auction, banquet and culminate with a fabulous art pottery show and sale. Vintage pottery dealers and contemporary potters from across the country will display their wares at this show and sale open to the public on Saturday, April 28 with free admission to the public. Please stop by to pick up your badges and convention info. WELCOME MEET & GREET and AUCTION Wednesday, April 25th, 7:00 PM Our Meet & Greet will be in The Meadow Room at the host hotel. You are invited to see old friends and meet new members. There will be lots of food and fun! We re going to do something quite different this year for our annual auction. We are going to have a small 30 40 lot auction of donated pots as part of our reception. Please consider donating a pot or two (contact Mark or Marie). Good news no reserves, no buyer s premium, no shipping and no internet competition. Bring lots of money and a fun-loving attitude. Let s make this event a BIG success. 3
Tour Wednesday 4/25 THURSDAY BANQUET Our Banquet this year will be held in the Prairie Ballroom in the host hotel. Our banquet begins at 6:00 PM and will include your choice of one of entree. This is a must-do event! Following dinner will be a brief our Annual Meeting. We will board our bus at 8:30 AM in the Gateway Hotel lobby for the brief ride to Scheman Building where we will meet our docents and continue on to the Iowa State University campus. In the depths of the Depression Grant Wood and the colony of artists from Stone City spent time beautifying the campus with murals and sculpture. What s left is an enduring grouping of masterpieces situated throughout the campus along with more contemporary works. Our walking tour of Art on Campus will allow us to see many of these works. Please wear comfortable shoes! Our bus will return us to Scheman Building where we will have a box lunch and a tour of the Brunnier Gallery and their Iowa State College pottery collection. A brief history of the ceramic program under Paul Cox will be presented by Director and Chief Curator University Museums Lynette Pohlman, Assistant Curator of Collections and Education University Museums Adrienne Gennett, and Mark Latta. Our bus will have us back at Gateway Hotel mid-late afternoon where you will have time to rest and get a quick bite of dinner. A Welcome Meet & Greet for convention attendees will be held at 6 PM. A time to catch up with old friends and meet new members. And, don t forget our auction! Convention Registered Members This year s AAPA Show and Sale, featuring many of the country s premier vintage and contemporary pottery dealers, will be held in the Prairie Ballroom at the host hotel. Early admission to the show will be from 4 PM to 6 PM Friday, April 27th for convention registered members. Open to the Public The AAPA Show and Sale will be open to the public on Saturday, April 28th. The show hours are 9 AM to 4 PM.
Seminars All seminars will be held in Meadow Room THURSDAY, APRIL 26th, 9:00 10:00 AM Minneapolis Handicraft Guild Steve Schoneck will talk about Minneapolis Handicraft Guild. In 1904, The Handicraft Guild School of Design, Handcraft and Normal Art was founded by 11 women many of whom were artists, educators and prominent members of society. Steve will tell us how the Guild started, it s goals and accomplishments, and sharing highlights from his collection. THURSDAY, APRIL 26th, 10:15 11:15 AM Abingdon Pottery Artware Christine Boone discusses Abingdon Pottery Artware - made in Abingdon IL from 1934 to 1950 - was one of the Midwest s many industrial art potteries. New shapes and colors were introduced about every six months, resulting in about 1,000 shapes and 149 glazes. Over 6 million pieces of Abingdon Pottery were sold through various outlets across the US, with Marshall Field s Chicago being the largest point of sale. Christine s presentation with slide show will cover the potteries history and include numerous illustrations of pieces made, as well as examples of some rare and unusual shapes and glazes. THURSDAY, APRIL 26th, 12:30 1:30 PM Christian Petersen Dr. Lea DeLong presents Christian Petersen. Christian Petersen (1885-1961) became the first permanent artist-in-residence at an American college when he was appointed by Iowa State College in 1934, after participating in the New Deal s Public Works of Art Project, led in Iowa by Grant Wood. Petersen collaborated with the Department of Ceramic Engineering to create two major sculptural murals, The History of Dairying and Veterinary Medicine. Petersen remained on the faculty until 1955, creating sculptures and installations that created an aesthetic legacy for the ISU campus. FRIDAY, APRIL 27th, 9:30 11:30 AM The State of Pottery Collecting An Interactive Discussion An interactive discussion will be moderated by Journal Editor Linda Carrigan and renowned pottery expert Riley Humler. This will be an event exploring where we ve been, where we are now and where we re going in pottery collecting. WALKING TOUR (date/time to be determined). There will be a walking tour of campus art and grounds A golf cart will be available (seats 4-6) on a first come basis for those who have difficulty walking. 5
