Purpose and Objectives PURPOSE: This conference is designed to update primary care physicians, nurses, pharmacists and support staff on recent advances in the management of lower gastrointestinal diseases that are commonly seen in a primary care practice. Information presented is intended to enhance clinical competence in the office management and differential diagnosis of selected colon and rectal diseases and may include initial management as well as guidelines to assist in determining when referral to specialty consultants is indicated. OBJECTIVES: At the end of this program, the participants should be able to: SESSION I Describe the anatomy of the colon and anorectum Discuss historical perspective on anorectal diseases Review treatment of hemorrhoidal diseases Discuss office management of anorectal pain SESSION II Review the diagnosis and treatment of diverticulitis Identify new medical treatment options for inflammatory bowel disease Discuss management of constipation Review evaluation of treatment of patients with fecal incontinence SESSION III Review modalities available for colorectal cancer screening Describe colonoscopic methods to remove colon polyps Discuss new chemotherapeutic agents available to treat colorectal cancers Describe methods to save anal sphincters when treating low rectal cancer Discuss management of perianal Bowen s and Paget s diseases
