Bloomsburg University College of Science and Technology Scholarship and Awards Descriptions COLLEGE AWARDS Top Honor Graduate This award is for the student with the highest academic average of the graduating class within the College of Science and Technology. Academic achievement awards are based on the cumulative QPAs as of the end of the previous semester. Syed R. Ali-zaidi Award for Academic Excellence This award is given by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Board of Governors to one student from all the 14 PASSHE schools. To be nominated a student must show academic excellence as well as leadership and communication skills. The University President selects the Bloomsburg University winner who is then submitted to the PASSHE system for consideration. AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH PATHOLOGY James Bryden Award This award is given to a student enrolled in communication disorders, teaching of the deaf, teaching of the blind, or special education. This award is named after Dr. James Bryden who was an Audiology and Speech Pathology Department chairperson and faculty member. The award is for $490. Frances Fay DeRose Memorial Award This $390 award is given to a speech therapy student entering their junior year. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. Husky Audiology Award This $2,810 award is given to a junior or senior audiology student. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. Cynthia Schloss Graduate Award This $1,000 award is given annually to a graduate student in the departments of Exceptionalities Programs and Audiology and Speech Pathology who most exemplifies the qualities that Dr. Cynthia Schloss held most dear volunteerism in the service of individuals with disabilities or special needs, commitment to the discipline, leadership and scholarship.

BIOLOGICAL AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES James E. Parsons Microbiology Scholarship This scholarship was established by Dr. James E. Parson, retired microbiology professor, who coordinated the department s medical laboratory science program for many years. The scholarship supports biology and health science majors who are currently sophomores or juniors with preference given to Medical Laboratory Science majors. This scholarship for $630 was established in 2009. James E. Cole Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2003 by Dr. James Cole, former department chairperson. Dr. Cole was instrumental in establishing allied health programs in the department. This scholarship for $540 supports medical imaging majors. Biological and Allied Health Science Scholarship This scholarship begun in 2014 and is funded by donations from alumni and faculty. The scholarship supports biology and health science majors who are currently sophomores or juniors and have completed 12 credits in biological science courses at Bloomsburg University. Two scholarships of $250 are awarded. Margaret Till Physiology Award Dr. Margaret Till, professor emerita and former department chairperson, established a physiology award to be granted to a junior or senior who is currently enrolled or has successfully completed at least one senior physiology course and integrated physiology lab. Candidates must write an essay describing the impact of physiology on their career. The winner of this award is selected by Dr. Margaret Till and the department s Outstanding Student Committee. A $250 cash award and a plaque is presented to the award recipient. Outstanding Senior in Allied Health Award This award is presented to a senior in recognition of outstanding academic performance and overall achievement as a major in medical imaging or health sciences. The recipient is selected by vote of department faculty. Outstanding Senior in Biology Award This award is presented to a senior in recognition of outstanding academic performance and overall achievement in the biology major. The recipient is selected by vote of department faculty. The award recipient is also recognized at the annual meeting of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania University Biologists. Dr. Stephen Schell Scholarship Dr. Stephen E. Schell, MD (BS Biology, 1975), a board certified otolaryngologist and graduate of Temple University School of Medicine, generously established an award in 2014 to assist pre-medical science students in preparing for medical school. This scholarship provides funds to help defray the cost of a preparatory course for the Medical College Admission Test. The award is for $390. Award recipients are selected by Bloomsburg University s Pre-professional Advisory Committee. 2

CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY Freshman Chemistry Scholarship This scholarship is given to an outstanding freshman chemistry major, with potential for continued academic excellence. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. This $350 scholarship is given in the spring semester. Junior Chemistry Achievement Award This scholarship is given to an outstanding junior chemistry major, with potential for continued academic excellence. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. This $350 scholarship is given in the spring semester. David Murphy Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given to a junior or senior chemistry major in memory of David Murphy, a former B.U. chemistry student. It is based on academic achievement, promise, and financial need. A minimum of 2.5 GPA is required. This scholarship pays $150 toward community activities fees. Dr. Melinda Hill Einsla and Dr. Brian Einsla Chemistry Scholarship This scholarship is given to an incoming freshman who graduated from Southern Columbia high school and has a financial need. First preference is given to a chemistry major, second preference to science major, and third preference to a professional studies major. This scholarship for $530. Parvin Sawhney Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given to a junior or senior enrolled in the College of Science and Technology. Preference is given to a student majoring in Chemistry. In the event there is no chemistry student that meets the criteria, then the scholarship should be awarded to a deserving student in other disciplines of the College of Science and Technology. Recipients must have earned at least 60 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and must exhibit financial need. This scholarship is for $1,000. American Chemical Society Analytical Chemistry Undergraduate Award This award is given to an outstanding junior chemistry student, with an aptitude for a career in the analytical chemistry field. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. American Chemical Society Outstanding Senior Award This award is sponsored by the Susquehanna Valley Section of the American Chemical Society. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. American Chemical Society Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry This award is given to an undergraduate student who demonstrates excellence in inorganic chemistry and has future plans in a chemistry career. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. 3

American Institute of Chemists Foundation Outstanding Senior Award The American Institute of Chemists Foundation honors outstanding senior chemistry majors showing ability, leadership and professional promise. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. Phi Lambda Upsilon Phi Lambda Upsilon is the National Chemistry Honor Society that recognizes those who achieve excellence in chemistry. This award is for an outstanding senior in chemistry with a minimum GPA of 3.5. POLYED Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Organic Chemistry This award is sponsored by the joint committee of American Chemical Society Divisions of Polymer Chemistry and Polymeric Materials Susquehanna Valley Section, and honors outstanding sophomore chemistry majors in the two semester organic chemistry sequence. The recipient is determined by the department faculty. ENVIRONMENTAL, GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES Braun Geology Field Camp Scholarship This award is given to a senior professional geology student to attend summer geology field camp, a requirement for all geology majors. Funded by Duane and Ruth Braun, former faculty members in the department, it is based on academic achievement, promise, and need. Dr. Duane Braun served as department chair from 2002-2008. Outstanding Achievement Award in Geosciences Research This award is to recognize a graduating senior in geosciences. Selected by department faculty based on research accomplishments in the geosciences. Outstanding Achievement Award in Geography and Planning This award is to recognize a graduating senior in geography and planning. Selected by department faculty based on academic achievement and contributions to the department, as well as to the field of geography and planning. Outstanding Senior in Environmental Geosciences This award is to recognize a graduating senior in environmental geosciences. Selected by department faculty based on academic achievement and contributions to the department, as well as to the field of environmental geoscience. Outstanding Achievement Award on Professional Geology This award is to recognize a graduating senior in professional geology. Selected by department faculty based on academic achievement and contributions to the department, as well as to the field of geology. 4

Professor Brian and Marty Johnson Geography and Planning Scholarship This is a monetary scholarship for a student majoring in the geography and planning. The department faculty select the recipient based on academic achievement, contributions to the department and to the field of geography and planning, and financial need. Professor Brian Johnson is a retired long-time faculty member from the department, who also served as chairperson. He and his wife established this scholarship as a way to support the department and majors in this field. EXERCISE SCIENCE The Bill Sproule Award This award is given to the graduating undergraduate senior in exercise science with the highest major QPA. Graduate Honor Award in Exercise Science This award is given to a graduate student in exercise science that best demonstrates the characteristics of service to the department and university, scholastic achievement and character. Recipients are determined by the faculty in the department. Graduate Honor Award in Clinical Athletic Training This award is given to a graduate student in exercise science that best demonstrates the characteristics of service to the department and university, scholastic achievement and character. Recipients are determined by the faculty in the department. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY Husky Instructional Technology Scholarship This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who shows talent in Instructional Technology. The scholarship has been in existence since 2009 and recipients are determined by a faculty committee in the Department of Instructional Technology. MATHEMATICS, COMPUTER SCIENCE AND STATISTICS Marek Mathematics Scholarship This scholarship is given to a secondary education mathematics major in their senior year with a minimum of 3.0 overall and major GPA. This scholarship is for $2,160 a year. Mr. Marek was a graduate of the secondary education mathematics program. J. Edward Kerlin Scholarship This scholarship is given to a sophomore mathematics or computer science major with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in their major. This scholarship is $765 for the fall semester. Professor Kerlin was a long time faculty member. 5

Elizabeth and James Mauch Scholarship This scholarship is given to a student pursuing a degree in the Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Department, with preference given to students in the mathematics education program. This scholarship is $520 for the fall semester. Mathematics, Computer Science and Digital Forensics Scholarship This scholarship is given to students majoring in Mathematics, Computer Science or Digital Forensics. James Pomfret Award Highest Academic Achievement Award in Mathematics. C.R. Reardin Award This award is given to a senior with a major in Mathematics, Secondary Education Mathematics, Computer Science or Digital Forensics that best demonstrates the characteristics of service to the department and university, scholastic achievement and character. This award has been given every year since 1977. NURSING Nursing Student Achievement Award The nursing department faculty annually selects a senior student as formal recognition for outstanding achievement at the undergraduate level. The student is presented with a certificate of recognition and a monetary gift of $100. Criteria for the award are: Nursing QPA of 3.50 or above, and demonstrated leadership abilities. PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY P. James Moser Scholarship This scholarship is granted to a sophomore or junior Electronic Engineering Technology major based on academic performance in electronic engineering technology & major required courses as well as extracurricular contributions. Started in 2011 by retired faculty member and department chair, P. James Moser. The amount awarded varies each year and is applied to the fall semester. Names of winners are engraved on plaque located inside the Hartline Science Center. Levi Gray Scholarship This scholarship is granted to students majoring in Physics, Health Physics, Secondary Ed/Physics or Physics 3+2 Engineering Science. This award is based on performance in physics courses, other required courses and overall GPA. Started in 1999 in honor of Levi Gray, a former BU physics professor. The amount varies each year and the scholarship is applied to the fall semester. Names are engraved on plaque located inside the Hartline Science Center. 6

Outstanding Achievement as a Student in Electronics Engineering Technology This award is given to students based on performance in upper-level electronic engineering technology courses, research activity and service to the department. Names are engraved on plaque located inside the Hartline Science Center. Outstanding Achievement as a student in Physics This award is given to students based on performance in upper-level physics courses, research activity and service to the department. Names are engraved on plaque located inside the Hartline Science Center. 7
