ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. HOWARD COUNTY CHAPTER Scholarship and Award Guidelines Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1906, is the oldest Black Greek letter college fraternity in the United States. In 2001, the Howard County, Maryland Chapter established the Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. The Foundation funds the scholarships and other education programs of the Howard County Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The Foundation funds nine scholarships to high school seniors who have excelled academically. Recognition awards, named for the founders of the Fraternity, are offered to six high school students who have distinguished themselves in one of six areas. In addition, one award is offered to a faculty member, administrator, or counselor whose guidance and assistance have inspired and supported African American students attending Howard County public schools. One award is also offered to a parent who has demonstrated a commitment and concern for African American students. Applicants must be African American and residents of Howard County or enrolled in a Howard County school to qualify for the scholarships and recognition awards. Applicants planning on attending two or four year colleges or universities are eligible for all scholarships. Through its scholarships and awards program, the Howard County Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. continues to encourage high academic achievement of African American high school students who plan to attend institutions of higher learning. Eligibility See attached criteria for specific scholarships and awards. Selection and Awards Through its Education Committee, the Howard County Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. selects from among the applicants, the highest scoring young people as the ones to receive our scholarships and recognition awards. Personal interviews with candidates may be required. Recipients will receive notification of their award by mail no later than 60 days after the deadline for scholarship submission. The Application Package To be considered for an award, candidates must submit a package that includes the following: A completed Scholarship Application Form (typed applications are preferred) An official high school transcript* An essay (for scholarship awards only) A minimum of two letters of recommendation, one of which must be academic (a recommendation may not be from an individual in your family). *If the applicant has earned college credit, a copy of the college transcript must also be provided. Scholarship for Excellence in Mathematics Three year cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in at least the following math courses: Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry/Analytic Geometry 3. Scholarship for Excellence in English Three year cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in all English courses 4. Scholarship for Excellence in the Natural and Physical Sciences Three year cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in the natural sciences, e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics 5. Scholarship for Excellence in the Social Sciences Three year cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in the social sciences, e.g., Anthropology, History, Psychology, Sociology
6. Scholarship for Excellence in a Foreign Language Three year cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in a foreign language through Level IV, e.g., French, German, Spanish 7. Scholarship for Excellence in the Fine Arts Three year cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in the fine arts, e.g., Drama, Music, Dance, Theatre 8. Scholarship for Academic and Athletic Excellence Lettered in at least one sport in each of the junior and senior years 9. Howard County General Hospital/Alpha Foundation Special Need Scholarship Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in all courses Demonstration for potential for academic success and explanation of financial need. Note: Distribution of all monies attached to a scholarship award will occur upon receipt of an official university letter stating proof of enrollment and/or registration
