COURSE OVERVIEW EDUCATIONAL NEED AND PROGRAM GOAL Chronic diseases in conjunction with misuse of antibiotics, rapid changes in technology and federal and state laws, decreases in Medicare funding plus an increase in the need of interdisciplinary teams has quickly transformed every aspect of health care. This symposium focuses on updating health care professionals on current procedures, treatments and management practices to help improve patient outcomes. Upon completion of this symposium, health care professionals will be able to utilize the information provided to improve their management of patients in the current challenging practice environment. With collaborative efforts, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other health care professionals may apply the most up-to-date drug management practices to ensure positive outcomes for their patients. This two-day symposium will feature outstanding speakers covering a broad range of topics including risks and benefits of the use of proton pump inhibitors, sepsis and fluid balance, medication therapy management (MTM), automatic drug dispensing in health care systems, the relationship between pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industries, discuss general changes to Texas State Board of Pharmacy rules specific to Class A, B and Class C pharmacies, Hepatitis C, rapid identification of pathogens and resistance markers, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, management in emergency and chronic asthma, therapeutic updates in HIV treatments, evidence-based psychopharmacological treatments of bipolar disorder, factors that increase the reliability of clinical trial results, medication reconciliation to improve medication outcomes and the emergence of novel antimicrobial agents. This symposium also offers one hour of law and safety. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed for pharmacists, family practice, primary care and internal medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, hospitalists, pharmacy technicians, residents and other interested health care professionals. EDUCATIONAL METHODS The format will consist of PowerPoint assisted lectures, each followed by a brief question and answer session. Participants will also take part in pre- and post- questions facilitated by an audience response system. Discuss general changes to Texas State Board of Pharmacy rules specific to Class A, Class B, and Class C pharmacies. Describe some changes to USP Chapter <797> and TSBP Rule 291.133 as a result to the approval of USP Chapter <800>. Identify general patterns of differences in treatment based on genotype, presence of cirrhosis and prior anti-hcv Treatment. Compare and contrast the technologies involved in rapid identification of pathogens. Determine appropriate empiric regimens for resistant organisms. Describe the underlying basic pathology that leads to asthma. Identify the common medications, regardless of age, for management of mild, moderate and severe asthma. Review screening guidelines for colorectal cancer. Discuss the importance of multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treating colorectal cancer. Describe the factors that increase the reliability of clinical trial results and appropriately apply clinical trial results to change treatment plans. Distinguish which medication reconciliation practices do or do not translate to improved medication outcomes in the next venue of care. Evaluate the predictive value of medication appropriateness tools for identifying patients at risk for experiencing an adverse medication outcome. Recall the history of anti-retroviral treatment development. Discuss advances in therapeutic options in HIV infections. Present the most current evidence-based psychopharmcological treatments in bipolar disorder. Discuss emergence of novel antimicrobial agents and their clinical pharmacology profiles.
