provocation of North Korea History Final project Jaehun.Jeong Title : Provocation of North Korea : Korean war, Nuclear threat, Missile threat, recent happening in South Korea North Korea regime has been involved in the production and trafficking of illicit drugs, as well as of counterfeit currency, cigarettes, and pharmaceuticals. These drug trafficking are expanding internationally making about $500 million profits per year[1]. U.S predicts that with this profit, North Korea would accelerate speed in developing military weapons and nuclear weapons. North Korea has been on the list of U.S as a country of terrorist since historical period however, by contract in Bush administration, and Clinton in 2009, the terrorist term was removed from list. By the contract or treaty, North Korea had to stop missile program and freeze plutonium nuclear program. Thesis paragraph: With every treaty North Korea made with U.S and South Korea since 1950s, after Korean War, North Korea have denied every treaty to gain benefits. North Korea was on a terrorist list in U.S because they were a communist country by dictator with eagerness to have war. Also provoked countries around the world. Existence of North Korea is threatening peace of the world since 1950 to today. They have used missile and developed nuclear weapon to gain power over the world. Not only this, to South Korea they have harmed citizens directly in many ways. Figure 1 : North Korea crossing boarder, 1945 In 1950, North Korea started Korean War, which is also an provocation. New York Times in 1950s describes event of Korean War. After North Korea crossed Thirty eight Parallel, they forced to attack Twenty-Third Infantry Regiment. The North used guerilla infiltration and assaulted the front 1 / 5

line of US and the South troops. As North kept pushing South, US thought counter attacks were needed, so Fifth Air Force had stroked North Korean base twice causing catastrophe to the North. To counter attack Air Force had to strike Seoul to get the capital back. Air Force reported that weather permitting visual bombing sight, B-29 unloaded more than 400 tons of bombs at Seoul. The bombing destroyed 28 tanks, 32 trucks, 14 box cars, 4 barges and 7 miscellaneous vehicles[2]. US and South Korea troops pushed up the North to Kum river, but North united with other Communists forcing South and American. Korean troops with adequate supplies and weapons held the North coming from the land and United Nation force held the sea and the sky. United troops of US and Korea fought back when there were provocation from the North. Figure 1 describes 38th parallel : a place where North Korea and South Korea was divided as a boarder. North Korean army crossing 38th parallel to start Korean War. David E. Sanger and Willian J. Broad wrote an article about North Korea shooting Rockets in New York Times. North Koreans argue that the rocket was to reach the moon however, many scientists and agencies see as a development of a weapon. In developing technology to make engine require helps from other country. Intelligence in United States found that engine North Korea developed can carry up to 80 tons of thrust, may be part of joint partnership with Iran.[3] The reason for this is that two engineers have visited North Korea, and this technique is not copy version of Russian rocket. Also, United State predicts the funds could have come from China. People are still arguing what the purpose of the rocket was for North Korea. Some agree on North Korea that rocket s purpose was to reach the moon. The engine has a power that will make North Korea to reach the moon. But others say the experiment was for a missile because North Korea have shot missile near Guam in the past, more technology is required to explore the moon and most importantly rocket had no technology to re-enter atmosphere.[4] North Korea doing this experiment is a threat because, this show that North Korea have developed technology that could be used for both(missile and rocket). Scientist predicts North Korea will success in developing rocket in five year. Harrison, Selg S wrote about why North Korea has developed missiles. Former defense secretary William Perry answered why Pyongyang is seeking to develop long-range ballistic missiles. He said "I believe their primary reason is security, is deterrence", they would be deterring the United States, I truly believe that they consider us a threat to them." [5]North Korea is threatening not directly to United State land but military base in Japan and in South Korea. They have capability to attack military base in Japan and in Korea but they know their missile will be detected by satellite causing suicide for their own. Meeting of North Korea and United State was held to stop North Korea developing missiles. By cutting out their development for missiles they wanted military in Korean Peninsula to retreat. The reason behind for this request is that they have no military alliance since 1958; however South Korea have continued allying with United State with highly developed weapon support. Decision of United State for the meeting was not to retreat military forces from South Korea because the war is still in a process. After this decision, North Korea said that the Pentagon is looking for an excuse to start a war and might well manufacture an incident to make it look as if the North had attacked.[6] North Korean nuclear weapon was developed after 2 / 5

cold war after experiencing United States unclear bomb. Their first technique to develop nuclear weapon was brought by 300 scientists who went to Soviet Union. Figure 2 : North Korea 1st nuclear test, 2006 Tae-Hwan Kwak wrote a book about North Korea s second nuclear crisis. Pyongyang officially announced that it had nuclear weapon of February 10. 2005, and tested its first nuclear weapon on October 9, 2006.[7] To resolve this nuclear issue of North Korea, six countries have gone through Six-Party talk in July 26 th August 7 th 2005. Main argument was to make North Korea get rid of nuclear technology. North Korea suggested to financially supporting to build light water nuclear reactor from other countries by not using nuclear weapon and South Korea providing electric power. United State wanted North Korea, not to use any of nuclear system even it s for civil purpose. South Korea had different idea with United State, allowing using nuclear power for civil purpose and not providing electrical power. At the 4 th meeting all countries signed with an agreement that North Korea not using nuclear weapon and providing financial support for light water system. Figure 2 show first nuclear test in 2006 causing 5.1 magnitude seismic event. This show how dangerous experimenting nuclear is. Figure 3 : North Korea mine attack in DMZ, 2015 3 / 5

One soldier lost both legs and another lost one of his leg in DMZ in Korea. South and North Korea is in a truce not in a peace. However, North Korea is provoking South Korea in many different ways. In Aug 4 th 2015, there was an incident that South soldier was hit by the mine[8]. South Korea is arguing that North Korea has planted mine in DMZ but North is denying. South Korea military resumed massive loudspeakers to distract North military by turning on K-pop songs. Not just for mine incident, North Korea is provoking is different ways all over the world which is total violation of truce. North Korea is also upset with UN having facility in Seoul, Korea about human right and violation of North. Figure 3 is showing exlposion of mine in DMZ. DMZ is a place where weapons are not permitted. But, mine got South Korean soldier lose his leg. To conclude, North Korea has started Korean War in 1950 s to unite Korea Peninsula into Communist country. Korean War is not yet over, it s just on a break period when North Korea is concentrating on making better weapons containing missiles and nuclear weapon. North Korea has used Missiles to threaten the world to gain their benefits from treaty. By accepting treaties from other countries saying they will stop investigating technology for weapons, they did not. North Korea has gained what they want from the world without giving out what world wants from them. Direct treat to South Korea and to U.S is increasing; the process of provocation has to be stopped.
