WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY SCULPTURE AWARD AND EXHIBITION 2018 FRIDAY 4 MAY SUNDAY 3 JUNE ENTRY FORM

Western Sydney University Sculpture Award and Exhibition Western Sydney University invites artists to submit work for inclusion in the eighth Sculpture Award and Exhibition to be held on the Campbelltown Campus from Friday 4 May - Sunday 3 June 2018. Entries close on Friday 1 September 2017. Western Sydney University is one of Australia s largest universities with six campuses located in Greater Western Sydney. The University s mission is to be a university of international standing and outlook, achieving excellence through scholarship, teaching, learning, research and service to its regional, national and international communities, beginning with the people of Greater Western Sydney. Western Sydney Sculpture Award and Exhibition aims to establish closer links between the university, artists and the community to provide a valuable educational and cultural resource for the region and to enhance the campus environment for teaching and learning. There are three awards: Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award, valued up to $30,000 UrbanGrowth NSW People s Choice Award, $5,000 (non-acquisitive) Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award, $5,000 (non-acquisitive) PROUDLY SPONSORED BY Cover image Michael Purdy, Monument to the long term perils of short term politics, 2016 Winner of 2016 Western Sydney University Sculpture Award Inside images (left to right) Joseph Bartolo, Life s Desparate Struggle, 2016 Winner of 2016 UrbanGrowth NSW People s Choice Award Greer Taylor, looking in/looking out, 2016 Site map Lisa Tolcher, Melody of Equilibrium, 2016 Winner of 2016 Janice Reid Emerging Artist Award Akira Kamada, Yura Yura, 2016 Conditions of Entry ELIGIBILITY 1. The competition is open to all artists for sculpture that has been created in the twenty-four months prior to the exhibition. 2. Work previously entered in other competitions will be accepted. 3. All entries must be the sole and original work of the artist submitting and must be his/her bona fide property free of any charge, encumbrance or lien. 4. All entries must be for sale. 5. A non-refundable entry fee of $55 (including GST), which will be used to offset the cost of staging the competition, must accompany each entry. 6. Western Sydney University reserves the right to cancel or postpone the award and exhibition, in which case, entry fees will be refunded. 7. There is no limit to the number of entries an artist can submit but a separate application form and entry fee must accompany each entry. 8. Staff and students of Western Sydney University may submit works for exhibition. They are eligible to receive the award from UrbanGrowth NSW but ineligible for the awards from the University. SELECTION CRITERIA 9. It is anticipated that up to thirty sculptures will be selected for the exhibition. The sculptures may be of any size. 10. Sculptures should be suitable for installation in the lakeside parkland setting on the University s Campbelltown campus where all finalists will be exhibited and where the Western Sydney University winning entry will be permanently installed. Artists are encouraged to visit the exhibition site prior to submission of entries. 11. Selection for exhibition will be by a panel of three to five judges appointed by the University. Once selected for exhibition or acquisition, the entry may not be withdrawn. 12. Selection will be from photographs (where work is completed) and/or drawings (where work is in progress) accompanied by a written description provided by the artist. Artists should therefore ensure that their applications are of high quality and accurately reflect the nature of the proposed entry. 13. The judges decision as to selection for exhibition will be final and binding on all artists and no correspondence will be entered into. SALES 14. All exhibited works will be for sale. Works sold will attract a 20% commission fee payable to the University by the artist. The commission fee will be used to cover the costs of the competition and exhibition and to contribute to future purchases of sculpture. 15. In cases where a gallery exclusively represents an artist, it is the gallery and artist s responsibility to negotiate their own arrangements and price the work accordingly. JUDGING CRITERIA 16. A panel of up to five judges will decide the winner of the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award and the Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award, from work selected for the exhibition. 17. For the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award, judging will be on the basis of originality, the expression of creative and inventive ideas, craftsmanship, suitability of materials (including robustness and safety) and the appropriateness of the work for permanent installation within the sculpture park at Campbelltown campus. Public safety will be an important criterion. 18. For the UrbanGrowth NSW People s Choice Award, judging will be on the basis of the number of votes a sculpture receives via a ballot, open to the public throughout the duration of the exhibition. The sculpture that has the most votes by the end of the exhibition will be awarded the UrbanGrowth NSW People s Choice Award. One vote per visitor to the exhibition on an individual voting form produced and provided by the University, will be considered a valid vote. Voting is to be carried out by an individual whilst onsite and put into the ballot box located at the All works reproduced courtesy of the artist. Photographs by James McMahon.

Location of sculpture exhibition site information tent. Any photocopied forms distributed by artists will not be considered as valid votes. 19. For the Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award, judging will be on the basis of orginality, the expression of creative and inventive ideas, craftsmanship, that best takes into consideration the location and siting of artwork within the environment. The work may be created from ephemeral materials. In the event that there are no finalists that meet this judging criteria, then the Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award will not be awarded in 2018. 20. The judges decisions on the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. AWARDS 21. There will be one acquisitive prize for the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award, which will be the purchase price of the winning entry up to the maximum value of $30.000. The exhibition commission does not apply to the acquisitive prize. 22. The UrbanGrowth NSW People s Choice Award will be to the value of $5,000 awarded to the sculpture that receives the most votes during the exhibition by ballot which is open to the public. 23. The Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award will be to the value of $5,000. 24. Western Sydney University reserves the right not to make an award should the judges consider that exhibits do not excel in the criteria specified in clause 17 and clause 19. 25. Any exhibit priced above $30,000 will not be considered for the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award unless the artist has specifically stated and signed on the form that they are prepared to sell the work to the University for $30,000. 26. The Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Janice Reid Site Specific Sculpture Award will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on Friday 4 May 2018. The UrbanGrowth NSW People s Choice Award will be announced at the end of the exhibition. TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE SITE 27. Artists are responsible for the transport of their sculptures to and from the site of the exhibition and for the removal of any packaging. Freight and transport costs in both directions are the responsibility of the artist. INSTALLATION AND DEINSTALLATION 28.
