Your participation in this year s election will help determine the direction of AIAA. Critical decisions await our leadership in almost every area of our operations. Our President, Vice Presidents and Directors are planning our way forward, and working closely with staff and members to fulfill these plans. I am continually impressed and grateful for the time and effort your elected leadership commits to the Institute and the Foundation. The Nominating Committee has assembled an outstanding slate of candidates. We urge you to carefully consider each candidate, and select those who most closely reflect your values and your vision for the future of AIAA. I ve been privileged to be a part of it, retiring from The Boeing Company in October after 37 years leading all facets of the business from commercial to defense, space, and security. With lawmakers focused on what to cut instead of how to grow, it s especially important to tell our story, from classrooms and boardrooms to the halls of Congress. We ve got to promote an understanding of what we do and why it s important. We ve got to inspire the next generation of aerospace professionals with big, bold ideas, advocate for investment in technology and innovation, and recognize the achievements of our members, who make our world a better place. Thirty-seven-year veteran of The Boeing Company, with extensive experience leading the commercial, defense, space, and security businesses of the integrated aerospace company. Vice President-Elect, Technical Activities Thomas Duerr The New Event Model (NEM) is an unprecedented transformation for AIAA. NEM will offer greater value than the current conference portfolio to Event attendees, their managers, exhibitors, and senior government sponsors and participants. I have been privileged to work with our current VP, Basil Hassan, the Technical Activities Committee (TAC), and the members to define and begin implementing this change. At the end of the term of the next VP Technical, NEM will be neither new nor a model. It is my principal responsibility and goal to institutionalize standard operating procedures for the AIAA Events to ensure enduring success. As we have emphasized in NEM-related communications, this is not solely a TAC activity. I will solicit and draw upon the best ideas within TAC and across the Institute to resolve known and unforeseen issues as we transition to AIAA Events in 2014. As I write this in late October 2012, AIAA faces significant uncertainties from a government cap on conference attendance and the imminent fiscal cliff. The impact on delivering value to AIAA members is undetermined and potentially severe. While NEM was developed in part as a reaction to evolutionary change in the environment over time, TAC would benefit from planning to mitigate or leverage sudden, disruptive change of the magnitude of current events. My secondary goal is to systematically and proactively identify and plan for disruptive change in the AIAA operating environment, to better prepare for and improve delivery of value to the membership should our basic assumptions be overturned. AIAA hosts multiple conferences to promote the development of advanced aerospace technology and to communicate this technology among aerospace professionals around the world. Aerospace professionals rely on AIAA to host leading-edge technical conferences to provide professional growth opportunities and to support professional recognition throughout their careers. To maintain AIAA s important technical leadership role and ensure its continued support of current and future aerospace professionals, it is paramount that AIAA hosts germane technical conferences that meet the needs of current and future aerospace professionals. As Vice President, Technical Activities, I pledge to: Ensure that the technical conferences meet or exceed the needs of the Technical Committees (TCs) as the meetings move to the new conference model Support efforts to grow the technical conferences to encompass new growth areas that benefit the membership and grow the Institute Work with the local AIAA Sections in augmenting AIAA conferences with Section-sponsored sessions or tracks Promote Young Professional activities by supporting Young Professional events and receptions, and facilitating their participation in the TCs Work to promote closer collaboration between Technical Activities and the Region and Section Activities Committee (RSAC) Bachelor of Science, Aerospace Engineering, University of Illinois (1977); Master of Engineering Management, (1990), Master of Science in Management of Technology (1993), Washington University, St. Louis. Vice President-Elect, Member Services Joseph Morano As Vice President, Member Services, I will once more be a hard-working, dedicated director, representing the interests of all the AIAA membership on the AIAA Board of Directors as I did for Region VI when I was their Regional Director. I will work my hardest to make sure the membership is getting their money s worth from their dues. I will convey Board information to the membership and bring forward members suggestions and comments to the Board. I will maintain continuous communications with the Regional Directors and our Technical and Standing Committees. Through this interaction we will enhance the value of AIAA membership. I hope to expand those areas that represent the most promise and correct those areas that need attention. In addition, I hope to leverage the diversity of our Regions and Sections by sharing their strengths and solutions with those who can benefit from previous successes. Having served six years as Region VI Director, I m familiar with the responsibilities of this Board position. While Regional Director, I worked closely with three Member Services VPs, observing their styles and learning much from each of them. While serving as Regional Director, I have faithfully attended and actively participated in every Board of Directors, Regional Leadership Conference, and Regional and Section Activities Committee Meeting. I will build on relationships established during my tenure as a Board member with Regional Directors, Technical and Standing Committee members, various sections around the country, and the AIAA staff, with whom I have established excellent working relationships. Annalisa Weigel As for so many in our industry, AIAA has played an important role in my own professional development and greatly enriched my career. My very first day as an aerospace engineering student, I joined the local AIAA student chapter. What a fantastic opportunity AIAA provided me to hone my leadership skills, participate in technical conferences, and share my passion for aerospace with other like-minded individuals. It was inspirational then, and over 20 years later, my AIAA involvement continues to be immensely rewarding on both a professional and personal basis. As VP-Elect, Member Services, I want to help our members grow both in their profession and in their passion for our industry. I believe my broad involvement to date with AIAA, from local section activities through national governance committees, gives me the experience and perspective needed to strengthen our portfolio of member services offerings. Director At-Large (continued on next page) Neal Barlow AIAA has provided important service and critical leadership to the aerospace industry as well as to national and international governments. AIAA s current efforts must focus on continuing to develop and provide relevant leadership and service to those constituencies. Under Jim Albaugh, I believe AIAA will help guide our government s leadership to place the right priority on developing aerospace related technologies of the future. We must insist on a regulatory and commercial environment favorable to R&D and the general aerospace industry. Having just served as AIAA Vice President for Education, I believe we have made excellent strides in providing critical education activities in an austere budget environment. Our technical conferences will remain the cornerstone of who we are as an organization, but we must also insure that we are seen as the nation s and the world s most important professional body when aerospace issues are being considered. An important aspect of AIAA s mission must be its education and technical outreach activities. I have been an active AIAA member since 2004, chair of the AIAA Pacific Northwest section, and held several officer positions within this section of over 1200 members spanning four states. I m especially interested in ensuring that newcomers to this fascinating field of aviation realize the value AIAA can bring to their careers. AIAA fosters growth in aerospace collaboration and engagement across countries and I have developed valuable connections with active AIAA organizations, groups, symposia, and workshops in Europe. These I developed over two years as the Boeing representative to the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) Industrial Support Team. In addition, my involvement with the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) Program Committee has enhanced my international connections associated with AIAA. If selected, I will use these connections to encourage and stimulate students worldwide who are pursuing their degree and contemplating a career in aerospace to use AIAA as a primary resource. One example to accomplish this is by leveraging the power of mentoring and networking offered by industryretired AIAA members willing to share their knowledge and experiences with others. I have been interested in flight since childhood. At 16 I was flying a helicopter to manage game on our mountainous ranch in South Africa. While in England studying for a degree in aeronautics, I worked at Westland Helicopters. After getting a master s degree in 1978 from University of Washington, I joined Boeing where I have been a design engineer for 747 auto flight control systems, a consulting engineer for V-22 Osprey, a program manager for 737 and 757 avionics, 787 structural windows development, and engineering standards. I m currently involved in Boeing s Advanced Air Traffic Management and have given technical presentations at symposia and workshops in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. AIAA Associate Fellow; recognized by AIAA Pacific Northwest Section with a special citation for leadership; involved with the ICAS Program Committee and session chair for numerous ICAS conference tracks; represent AIAA on the board that annually selects the Flight Pathfinder Awards to honor pioneering achievements in flying, engineering, education, operations, manufacturing, and an at-large category. I hold three patents related to wind shear, airplane diagnostics, and maintenance processes. Most of my authored publications are within the Boeing document system. Director Technical, Information Systems Group Sanjay Garg My motto is Don t let what you cannot do stand in the way of what you CAN DO. I have served AIAA with this CAN DO attitude since 1989. As Technical Program Chair for the 1993 GNC Conference, I led the program committee for a very successful conference with zero no-shows and the highest conference attendance to that date, despite being among the first to implement the No Paper, No Podium policy. I was among the first advocates of establishing the Infotech@Aerospace conference to showcase IT contributions to aerospace systems. When the conference was struggling for continuity, I was asked to lead the organizing committee, and served as General Chair for the very successful 2009 conference. I helped establish an organizational structure for the conference, which allowed all the Information Systems Group TCs to participate on an equal footing. I believe that for AIAA s future success, it must broaden its appeal to the emerging large community of information system technology developers who are making significant contributions to advancements in aerospace systems. The future of aerospace systems is more intelligence and greater autonomy, and the technologies covered by the Information Systems Group TCs have an important role to play in helping realize this future. Director Technical, Propulsion and Energy Group Jeff Hamstra (Fellow) AIAA must continue to offer cutting-edge programs and services to thrive as the aerospace profession evolves. As Director of the Propulsion and Energy Group, I will work to enhance the excellence of the Institute s products, improve membership value across the aerospace community, and forge consensus to take action on the issues we face. I have actively served AIAA for over a decade, as P&E Deputy Director for the past seven years, Technical Committee Chair, and leader of many technical and service initiatives. I am well prepared for the P&E leadership challenge. I am committed to ensuring AIAA s position as the premier aerospace professional organization. To remain a preeminent professional society, AIAA needs to solidify our traditional base in aeronautics and space while expanding our membership base in new areas. Energy and systems engineering are two prime areas to be tapped to grow AIAA membership, and the P&E Group is uniquely capable of facilitating this growth. Our new P&E Forum gives us an excellent platform to reach out to potential new members who we can bring into AIAA, growing our ranks and diversifying our portfolio of technical areas that are critical to the future. Director Region VII Luisella Giulicchi AIAA, the world s leading aerospace professional society, does not have the same level of influence and penetration internationally as in the U.S. The enormous potential of the worldwide aerospace community, in terms of resources and technical exchanges, remains largely untapped. There is a vast opportunity to increase international membership and participation in AIAA activities. AIAA s 2012 2016 Strategic Plan clearly identifies how to strengthen AIAA and make it relevant to aerospace professionals worldwide. I am extremely motivated to realize this plan as Region VII Director, through specific international initiatives for memberships and services, collaboration with other institutes, and standardization. I also believe a new approach, to serve the international aerospace community by functional sector (e.g., aviation, space) and technical area, instead of geographic location, is warranted. My work at the European Space Agency (ESA) provides extensive experience interacting daily in an international context with space agencies, industries, research institutes, and universities. I have a worldwide network of contacts built through ESA and through participation in professional organizations: International Federation of Automatic Controls (IFAC), American Astronautical Society (AAS), International Astronautical Federation (IAF), Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS), and Institute of Navigation (ION). As an active member of the Guidance, Navigation and Control Technical Committee (GN&C TC) and Region VII Deputy Director, I have acquired significant knowledge of and insight into AIAA. For twenty years I have promoted aerospace activities, organizing conferences and events and editing publications. I believe the expertise I can bring to the Board of Directors will be instrumental in implementing AIAA s Strategic Plan in the International Region.
