Bachelor s Degrees Report Degrees Earned 2016-17 December 2017 The Minnesota Private College Council (MPCC) annually reports on bachelor s degrees earned by students attending a Minnesota college or university. This report looks at bachelor s degrees earned by sector and includes analysis by students of color, gender, and degrees in STEM fields. (Graduates with a double major were only counted once, based on their first major) Total Bachelor s Degrees Earned In Minnesota 33,054 individuals earned bachelor s degrees in 2016-17. MPCC member institutions awarded 9,863 bachelor s degrees, 30% of all degrees in the state, compared to 33% at Minnesota State universities and 31% at the. MPCC member institutions awarded a higher share of bachelor s degrees in some key areas: 49% in physical sciences (chemistry, physics, geology and astronomy), 42% in history, 38% in foreign languages, 37% in health professions, and 35% in mathematics and statistics. Bachelor s Degrees Earned by Students of Color Of 5,525 bachelor s degrees earned by students of color (excluding international students), 29% were earned at MPCC member institutions compared to 33% at the and 33% at Minnesota State universities. Students of color accounted for 17% of bachelor s degrees earned at MPCC member institutions compared to 18% at the and 17% at Minnesota State universities. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)* Bachelor s Degrees Of the 7,432 bachelor s degrees earned in STEM fields, 27% were earned at MPCC member institutions compared to 50% at the and 20% at Minnesota State universities. o At MPCC member institutions, 20% of bachelor degrees earned were in STEM fields, compared to 35% at the and 14% at Minnesota State universities. Women earned 47% of bachelor s degrees in STEM disciplines at MPCC member institutions compared to 36% at the and 31% at Minnesota State universities. *STEM fields include biological and biomedical sciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, engineering technologies and engineering-related fields, mathematics and statistics, natural resources and conservation, and physical sciences. 1
