The first stop of the trip was the nation s capital, Washington D.C. The group spent three days touring the sights of the city. The first day was the mall area with the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Washington Monument, the American History Museum, the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, and some ice skating at the end of the day. The second day was touring the White House, the Capitol, the Supreme Court, lunch at Union Station, the Newseum, and in the evening a show at the Kennedy Center. The last day was spent doing college tours at George Washington University and Georgetown. On the trip from Washington D.C. to Durham the students stopped at Manassas Battlefield. The second stop of the trip was the thirtieth annual Duke Model United Nations Conference (DUMUNC XXX) in Durham, North Carolina. The students spent four days simulating the work of the real United Nations. The students were guided on a tour of the campus by Duke Senior and SMCHS alum Erica Jain ( 07). Erica was an MUN student at SMCHS and has continued with her interest in MUN for all four years at Duke as well. SMCHS MUN represented the countries of Poland and the United States in committees that dealt with topics such as human rights, international peace and security, and refugees. SMCHS MUN won seventeen individual awards with Steven Holcombe (Coto de Caza) winning the prestigious gavel award given to the best delegate in the committee. Santa Margarita won the Outstanding Delegation award at the conference which is given to the school with the best delegates in attendance.

07 INVITE Invitational Conferences 2011-2012 Closed Invitational Conferences Students must be invited to apply for these trips. Students are not obligated to attend these trips and if they cannot their refusal will actually allow someone else to potentially be invited. Turning down an invitation one year does not influence invitations for the following year. Students that are not selected but have a strong desire to attend should let Mr. Remmell know so they can be put on a waiting list if a spot opens and if we decide to fill that spot. These trips involve missing one week or more of school which is difficult even for the most diligent, hard working student. Students and parents should be aware that attending these trips could have an adverse effect on their student s grades. China (March $3500) - Senior invitational trip with a limit of 10 delegates. We would love to be able to take more but the conference limits us to ten delegates and this is about the appropriate best size for a group traveling in China. Paris (December $2500) - Seniors invitational trip with a limit of 18 delegates. This is a size limit both from the conference and that makes traveling as a group in Paris easier. Boston/Brown (November $2000) - Junior invitational trip with a limit of about 20 delegates. London (October $2500) - Junior invitational trip with a limit of 18 delegates. UC Berkeley (March $400) - Sophomore invitational trip Open Invitational Conference Anyone is able to submit an application. (even those students invited to a trip listed above) A student is not guaranteed acceptance if they apply. This conference is an opportunity to travel with the program and develop the skills that might be helpful in getting invited to one of the closed invitational conferences. In addition, we try to make an effort to have a conference that is a less costly alternative to the longer, more expensive trips. UCSB (February $250) - this trip is during President s day weekend and students miss no school! Any time a student travels with MUN they should consider it an audition for the next year s travel trips. In addition to being a good delegate, students should show maturity, the ability to listen to and follow directions, and respect for authority. Students need to be able to get along with others in the group and be easy to travel with.
