HELLENIC REPUBLIC National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Postgraduate Programme in Southeast European Studies Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration 6, Themistokleous str., 106 78 Athens, Greece CALL FOR APPLICANTS The English-speaking postgraduate programme Postgraduate Programme in Southeast European Studies will accept up to twenty-five (25) students for the academic year 2014-2015. The Programme is primarily addressed to students with a first degree in the social sciences (sociology, politics, economics, social anthropology, political and social history, Balkan studies). Εligible to apply are graduates of Greek Higher Education Institutions or foreign Higher Education Institutions which have been recognised by the Greek state as equivalent. In the case of foreign degrees, official recognition * by Hellenic Naric is a prerequisite for participation in the Programme. Those interested in enrolling should submit to the Programme Secretariat their application from 30 January 30 May 2014 (post-stamped by mail or in person). Documents required: 1. The completed application form (which may be downloaded from our Web site www.see.pspa.uoa.gr and at www.pspa.uoa.gr). 2. A statement of purpose in English (500 words maximum). 3. A certified copy of the applicant s first degree (a minimum GPA of 6.5/10 is a prerequisite for acceptance on the Programme). Applicants who will not have graduated by the application deadline but are expected to graduate in 2014 should submit a signed statement declaring (a) their current grade point average, (b) the number of courses they need to pass in order to graduate, and (c) that the final degree will be submitted, at the latest, by registration, at the beginning of October 2014. 4. A certified copy of the applicant s official university grades transcript. 5. Official translations into Greek of documents 3 (degree) and 4 (transcript), required when the original documents are in a language other than Greek or English. Students submitting their documents in English should be aware that if accepted on the Programme, they will be required to provide official translations into Greek for registration at the University of Athens. 6. Proof of excellent knowledge of the English language in the form of certified copies of (a) Proficiency of Michigan or Cambridge or (b) TOEFL with a minimum score of 88 (Internet-based) or (c) IELTS with a minimum score of 7,5 or of (d) a University degree in English Language and Literature or (e) of a degree from an English speaking University (If the university is located in a non-english speaking country, applicants should also attach a certificate from the University certifying that all courses were conducted in English). * The procedure of recognition can start after the announcement of the successful candidates.

7. Two recommendation letters, at least one of which should be from a faculty member of your own university. Recommendation letters should be written in English or Greek, have an original signature and stamp of the relevant institution and should be attached to the application in a sealed envelope with the referee s signature over the flap. Applicants are asked to use the Form for Referees which is part of the application material. 8. Simple photocopies of other supporting documents e.g. knowledge of other foreign languages, seminar attendance certificates, etc. 9. Successful applicants who hold a first degree from a non-greek university will be required, upon acceptance by the programme, to submit their qualifications for recognition by Hellenic Naric, the official Greek certificating institution for foreign degrees (please see the website of Hellenic Naric http://www.doatap.gr). ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-2015 Introduction The Postgraduate Programme in Southeast European Studies was originally founded in 1999 as part of a broader project ( U/SEE Project ), under the auspices of the European Union s Royaumont Process. The Universities which participated in the U/SEE Project were the following: University of Tirana, University of Sarajevo, Sofia University, University of Zagreb, University of Belgrade, Sts Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, University of Bucharest, University of Maribor, University of Ankara and University of Athens. The Postgraduate Programme in Southeast European Studies operates as an autonomous Postgraduate Programme of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The Programme was founded at a time of violent upheaval in Southeastern Europe, with the goal of contributing to the promotion of peace, democracy and reconciliation in the region. It aims to stimulate discussion and promote awareness of the region, to facilitate cross-border academic and scientific cooperation, and to bring together students from all over the region and beyond in order to promote mutual understanding and good neighbourly relations. Among the Programme s strong assets is its multinational and interdisciplinary character. Programme Structure and Content The one-year English-speaking Master s programme includes coursework and research. Classes run from the beginning of October to May and take place on weekdays after 4 p.m. Class attendance is compulsory. The courses that were taught in the academic year 2013-2014 are the following: Modern and Contemporary History of Southeastern Europe Nationalism in Southeastern Europe European Integration and Southeastern Europe Politics and Society in Contemporary Southeastern Europe The Political Economy of Transition: The Case of Southeastern Europe Sources of Conflict in Southeastern Europe The titles of the courses of the academic year 2014-2015 are currently under revision Students will be required to take an introductory test at the beginning of the Programme. During the two semesters, students are required to make oral presentations, take mid-term tests and submit written essays, according to the organization of each course. Upon completion of the coursework they pursue further research, leading to the submission of a dissertation in September.

Faculty The teaching staff comes primarily from the Faculty of Political Science & Public Administration of the University of Athens. Academics from other institutions in Greece and abroad may also be invited to teach on the Programme. Tuition Fees The tuition fees are 1500, payable in one non-refundable instalment at the time of registration. Tuition fee waiver In pursuit of the Programme s aims as outlined above, the Coordinating Committee grants exemption from the Programme fees to students with citizenship of the following specified Southeast European countries who are not in receipt of a scholarship from any source: Albania Bosnia and Herzegovina Bulgaria Croatia Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244 Montenegro Romania Serbia The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Applicants are required to specify their citizenship on the application form.
