Chairman s Note Y.M. Tunku Dato Yaacob Khyra Chairman The Budimas Charitable Foundation I could never stress enough how worrying the issues faced by underprivileged children in Malaysia. There are currently over 150,000 children still living under the poverty line in the country. There are many factors that contribute to poverty in Malaysia; the main one being due to low family income; a large family unit; lack of employment opportunities and a low home maker wage. If we put together a list of the most common costs associated with raising a child in Malaysia today, including delivery costs, schooling costs, and University fees, the costs involved add up to between RM 400,000 and RM 1.1 million depending on your hopes and aspirations for your little ones. Very few people are given the same opportunities to earn that kind of income and to properly bring up children to an average standard. Parents born to poverty, bring up children in poverty, with a destiny of poverty. This poverty revolving door syndrome must stop. This is where, we at The Budimas Charitable Foundation, come in to make the break in the poverty syndrome chain. If we can get a child out of poverty, we can start a chain of prosperity. The Budimas Charitable Foundation strives to support the welfare, and the well-being of children in need in Malaysia. The foundation does this via its three-pronged approach to curb this issue, by focusing its effort in addressing the three basic necessities for a child; which are food, education and a home. fortunate children have a chance at life too. The foundation endured many challenges to be where it is today and it is the public that played a huge role in contributing to the foundation. Every year, there will be more children that are in need of help and we must always be ready at their aid. No child deserves more or lesser than the other and we are proud to say that we have reached out to more than 7,000 children. Our children are our only hope for the future, but we on the other hand are their only hope for their future. With that said, I d like to thank everyone that has worked hand-in-hand with The Budimas Charitable Foundation to provide every child in Malaysia equal opportunities to shape their own lives. It s time to realise the promise of a fair playing field for all children. Together, we can and must do much better for the underprivileged children. I want to take this opportunity, to thank all of you, all our donors, our volunteers, supporters in the media and technical advisers, who have worked hand in hand with us, in making our vision and mission a success. Without your generosity, without your support, without your love for these children, it would not be possible, for us, to have achieved so much. On behalf of the foundation and the children, once again I would like to say a big thank you! It s not an old cliché that the children are our future, but they truly are. As the Chairman of The Budimas Charitable Foundation, I strongly believe on the importance of our children s well-being. By this I mean, every child deserves the right to the basic needs mentioned earlier. Those needs for a child are what we work hard for everyday at the foundation to ensure that the less 4

Principal Officer s Message Anne Rajasaikaran Principal Officer The Budimas Charitable Foundation If child aid or support sets a child free from poverty that makes each sponsor or donor a hero Every child deserves a chance in life. Every child, no matter where they live in the world, deserves to have adequate food, shelter and educational opportunities. Giving every child a chance also means supporting efforts to end child poverty, and ensuring the child has an opportunity at a bright future. We are indeed very thankful and grateful to all our sponsors and donors, old and new that have continued to support us despite the growing economic uncertainties. My sincere gratitude to the puclic and the society that work hand in hand with us in the pursuit to give underprivileged children a future of love and hope. Researchers have found that poverty can harm the brains of small children. Low-income families had a brain surface area on average 6 percent smaller than children of higher income families. I strongly believe that education is the only way out of poverty and I believe everyone do too. It is with education that a person could come to realisation that he or she deserves and can do better for their own future. And this is where we play our role as caring as well as conscious adults to help in any way we can to give children, not only our own, a chance for a good life. At The Budimas Charitable Foundation, we do hope to break this chain of poverty from the parents to children. The foundation also supports refugee children and not only Malaysian children. The Budimas Charitable Foundation which began with only funding 6 charity homes, now funds 30 homes, feeds 5,932 school children breakfast every school morning and built 4 operating libraries in 4 different Orang Asli settlements. We are hoping to go to even greater lengths in the coming years to reach out to more more less fortunate children in Malaysia. 5

Our History Our Vision Giving Children a Future of Love and Hope Our Mission To provide guidance and funding in support of the welfare and wellbeing of orphans and underprivileged children in Malaysia The Budimas Charitable Foundation (BUDIMAS) (PPAB 07/1998) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, incorporated under the Trustees Act 1952, with the mission to provide guidance and funding in support of the welfare and the well-being of orphans and underprivileged children in Malaysia. Noted as a reputable foundation since its inception in 1998 under the royal patronage of DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong, the foundation has been actively helping underprivileged children to have a chance at a normal childhood like any other children possiblycould. Having actively working in aid of the less fortunate children in the country, Budimas began by financially supporting charitable homes in Malaysia since 1998. It is about ten years ago that the foundation addressed the need of the underprivileged children via a three-pronged approach by forming three programmes which are the Budimas Home Charity Fund (BHCF), Budimas Food Charity Fund (BFCF) and Budimas Education Charity Fund (BECF). This addresses the three basic necessities of a child which are a home, food and education. 9

The 3 Programmes Budimas Home Charity Fund (Home) The Budimas Charitable Foundation began by financially supporting 6 homes with 272 children, in the year 2002. In 2016 The Budimas Charitable Foundation supportsed over 1,500 children from 30 homes across Malaysia.29 of these homes were given financial assistance to help them cope with shortages in their funds for basic expenses. The Budimas Charitable Foundation manages and operates one home, Pusat Jagaan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Budimas Orion/ The Budimas Orion Home which is located in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan. The home can accommodate up to 150 children and is equipped with basic necessities. To clothe, feed, educate and provide shelter for these underprivileged and orphaned children, it costs approximately RM15 per child, per day depending on their age. The children of the Orion home are from ages 4 to 18 years old. The Budimas Orion Home in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan The children of The Budimas Orion Home 10

The 3 Programmes Budimas Food Charity Fund (Food) The Budimas Food Charity Fund was initiated to ensure that children from poor families who can't afford to have their breakfast will not go to school hungry. The program began in July 2010, with 6 schools in Kapar, Klang involving 350 children. Today, we are supporting more than 5,900 children from 95 public schools across Malaysia. The breakfast program caters to the families whose household earnings are RM1000 and below, with more than 2 children under their care will qualify for this fund. The menu is consistent with the RMT (Rancangan Makanan Tambahan by the government) menu which caters to students of all. The breakfasts served are nutritious and prepared according to the requirement of a child. Well-nourished children are more likely to attend school, be engaged and ready to learn 11

The 3 Programmes Budimas Education Charity Fund (Education) The Budimas Education Charity Fund aims to provide education to underprivileged children of Malaysia. The key strategy is to establish educational facilities, such as libraries, in rural and poor villages in our country. One of the objective is to encourage the Orang Asli children to read and to fulfill their reading passion with sufficient materials. In 2016, the foundation has built 2 libraries in Negeri Sembilan and 2 more in Selangor. They are at Kampung Kampung Orang Asli Guntur (Kuala Pilah), and Kampung Orang Asli Langkap (Kuala Pilah)., Kampung Orang Asli Sg Lalang (Selangor) and Kampung Orang Asli Paya Lebar (Selangor). Out of the 4 libraries that were built, 2 Libraries both in negeri Sembilan began operating by 2016.. Each library was equipped with 4,000 books and the Orang Asli children were able to read and revise with the reading materials provided. It costs RM180,000 to build a fully functional library in these rural areas. There will be more libraries to be built in Orang Asli Settlements in the states of Selangor, Kelantan and Pahang in the coming year. Education is the key to opportunity. It s a ticket out of poverty 12

Success Story I was born in Klang, Selangor and since young, my siblings and I were looked after by our grandmother. I didn t really know my father but my mother on the other hand had too many run-ins with the law. The load on my grandmother to look after us siblings got too much for her to handle as she tries to ensure that we are always together. Hence she decided to seek assistance from the Social Welfare Department (SWD). My siblings and I we sent to Rumah Tunas Harapan Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Kuala Selangor. That was when I knew that I had to learn to be independent and too look after my siblings as well. We live in that home for 2 years until one day, our mother came to take us home after the court granted her custody. We then live together with my step-siblings. Not too long after that, my mother was taken under custody again and we were all sent back to a shelter. I was sent to the Child Welfare House Sultan Abdul Aziz, Perak whereas my his siblings were sent to a different welfare center. After staying there for 8 months, my mother came looking for me again and decided to take me home. I had to stop school and worked as a waiter as a restaurant in Bangi to help sustain our livelihood. The last I attended school was at Standard 6 and did not go to school for more than 2 years after that. During that period, my mother got into trouble with the law again and had to be taken away. It was then the Social Welfare department sent me to The Budimas Orion Home. One of the first thing that was done for me by BUDIMAS was to enroll me back to school and after a lot of persuasion and appeal to a local Negeri Sembilan secondary school, Sekolah Menengah Ampangan, I was given the opportunity to begin school again at Form 3, after not attending school for Form 1 and 2. When I was given a second chance at life, I knew that was it. This was my only opportunity to do things right for myself and strive for a change in my life. I knew this was also my chance for a brighter future for myself and my siblings. I believe through education, opportunities will come knocking on my door. So, after no education for more than 2 years, and joining at Form 3, the year where 15 year olds sit for their PT3 exams, I knew I had to excel. I am proud to say, I obtained 3As for my PT3 and I never felt that thrilled in my life. My second chance at life was made possible by The Budimas Charitable Foundation and I am very grateful for that. Now at 16, I am very determined to get straight As for my SPM and I know that it is possible. I do hope that soon I will be lawyer by profession. 13
