Using a systems approach, high risk patients will be identified along with specific strategies for risk reduction. By understanding the pathophysiology of underlying pre-existing conditions, the PACU/ASU nurse will be better prepared to optimize surgical outcomes. The four sessions for this one day program will include: The patient with cardiac disease such as coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, CHF, dysrhythmias and MVP; the patient with pre-existing pulmonary disease such as asthma, COPD, aspiration and ARDS; The patient with pre-existing Renal, GI and Neurological diseases. The final session will examine all the risks that may present in the preoperative period from admission to discharge. GENERAL PRE-CONFERENCE: TERRORISM PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT & IMPLICATIONS FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS Diane Myers RN, MSN, PHN This course will help nurses to understand the psychological impact of various types of disasters and terrorism on individuals, the community and health care providers. Types of disasters, a brief overview of terrorist weapons, phases of recovery, populations at psychological risk and the unique psychological impacts of terrorism will be presented. Crisis intervention approaches to stabilize individuals and groups in time of terrorist events will be discussed. An overview of the mental health response to the Oklahoma City bombing and the attacks of September 11, 2001 and innovation in response to mass fatality events, including Family Assistance Centers for next-of-kin and Respite Centers for responders will be examined. This pre-conference will also provide an overview of compassion fatigue and secondary trauma in responders to traumatic events. The body initiates compensatory responses that eventually lead to progressive decompensation. This session will provide an understanding of the scope of these pathophysiologic changes as a basis to understanding patient management strategies. 1B Sedation & Paralytics In Critical Care Andrea Efre RN, MS, ARNP, CCRN Factors to consider when choosing a sedative agent, the use of neuromuscular blocking agents and how to assess the depth of paralysis with nursing implications will be discussed. The long-term effects when used inappropriately can be fatal. Positive results can be obtained from correct dosing and meticulous nursing care with knowledge of sedative, analgesics and neuromuscular blockers. 2B Endocrine Pearls For The Critical Care Nurse Robin Braden RN, MSN Multiple endocrine abnormalities affect the management of patients with critical illness. This session will examine those conditions related to glycemic control, the stress response controversies in adrenal support in septic shock and alterations in thyroid function.
