PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS Experience in domestic cleaning in an institutional environment is desirable. A qualification in first aid would be advantageous. He/she should be of good timekeeping, able to work without direct supervision and enjoy working in a team. 4. BUDGET No budgetary responsibility. 5. PURPOSE OF THE POST To assist the cleaning supervisor in ensuring an effective and efficient operation of cleaning services within the University.
6. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervisory Duties Nil, except on rare occasions where the post holder may be required to deputise for his/her supervisor. (i) (ii) Cleaning and Associated Duties General cleaning of areas within the University such as classrooms, hall, stairs, toilets, offices etc. Specialised cleaning of areas such as computer rooms, laboratories etc. (iii) General cleaning of residences, such as bedrooms, toilets, kitchens etc. (iv) Changing of linen in bedrooms where required. (v) Collection and distribution of laundry etc. (vi) Cleaning of windows, walls etc. (vii) Handing in to supervisor of any lost property found. (viii) Any other duties appropriate to the post. 7. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (c) (d) (e) Ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of the areas allocated for cleaning and, where classrooms are allocated, ensuring their readiness for teaching, e.g. with adequate supply of chalk, boardrubber etc. Reporting to designated supervisor any incident or accident particularly with regard to security, health and safety etc. Reporting to the designated supervisor or caretaker of the area concerned any damage to University premises and property such as broken windows, graffiti, torn curtains, damaged blinds, furniture etc. The post holder has a responsibility for ensuring safety in the workplace and in this respect ensuring compliance with all instructions relating to the use and storage of materials/equipment necessary for the performance of his/her tasks. Such other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably required within the level of the post. 2
8. GENERAL CONDITIONS (c) (d) (e) (f) Whilst the post holder will initially be located within a particular team, he/she may be required to work anywhere within the University. This could take the form of assisting with occasional functions or a relocation, either temporary or permanent. The post holder may be required to undertake evening duties as part of his/her normal working hours or to work additional hours for which payment will be made. The post holder may be required to work shift rotas on a temporary or permanent basis after consultation. The post holder will be required on occasions to attend training courses as specified by the University after consultation. The post holder will be required to wear protective clothing provided by the University. The post holder will use only the equipment and materials provided by the University. 9. HEALTH AND SAFETY The post holder will be responsible for Health and Safety in the area under his/her control on a day-to-day basis, and must ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that he/she is familiar with all relevant Health and Safety legislation and recommendations and that these are observed within his/her areas of responsibility. Attention is drawn particularly to the existence of the University's policy statement on Health and Safety at Work, copies of which have been displayed on notice boards in the University (further copies may be obtained from the Human Resources Department). Any accident in the post holders area must be entered in the Accident Book. 10. This job description sets out the details of the post at the time when it was drawn up. Such duties may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility entailed. Such variations are a common occurrence and cannot of themselves justify a reconsideration of the grading of the post. 3
