What is ERA-Chair Scheme/Initiative? The purpose of this initiative (5-years duration) is to help close the research and innovation divide in Europe and widen participation in the European Research Area. The ERA Chairs programme support universities and other eligible organizations in achieving the level of research excellence required to be competitive at international level on a sustainable basis. 2
History of Application -1 st FP7 call in 2013 with UMONS one of the Universities (11/111, 10%) selected projects (RE- SIZED) from the region of Walloon, Belgium conceiving to have such a Scheme Research Proposal Area: Net-Zero Energy Efficiency on City/Districts Grant Holder: Department of Thermodynamics and Physical Mathematics, Faculty of Engineering, (FPMs), Professor Marc Frére Selected ERA-Chair Holder: Christos Ioakeimidis 3
R&D&I Objectives 6 research topics on Smart Districts & Cities: Buildings, urban planning, sustainable mobility and growth towards the Smart District/city concept Heat, Electricity Demand and Comfort Control in Buildings Heat and Cold Storage/Production in presence of renewable sources for Net-Zero Buildings Buildings as part of the Smart Grid for City District Control Strategy of Centralized Energy System Optimization techniques of Buildings and μpower Grids communication and geographic information as part of the Smart District concept 4
Project/Platform (R&T) Objectives To develop a new Research Activity related to Net Zero Energy City Districts based on: The experience of 5 UMONS Dpts Gathered in a new collaborative Team: ERA Chair Team head by an ERA Chair Holder To enhance the scientific performance (Publications, Conferences, PhD, patents, etc.) To enhance the international visibility: International recruitment procedure Participation to international strategic events and working groups To enhance R&D results impact on regional economy To enhance the project funding performances To develop a professional management policy that ensures the objectives to be achieved 5
