2018 For New Zealand Citizens & Permanent Residents NZ Diploma in Veterinary Nursing This qualification is targeted at individuals who seek to further their veterinary nursing education and provide outstanding nursing care and welfare to patients within the Veterinary clinic. Become an essential part of a veterinary team, clinic or hospital and provide surgical and medical veterinary nursing, manage services and perform diagnostic sampling and medical imaging. These skills will be gained through the use of our new purpose built simulation veterinary clinic. Make your passion for animals your career The NZ Diploma in Veterinary Nursing recognises competence in a wide range of skills that enable students to become an essential part of a veterinary team, clinic or hospital through being able to: Provide surgical veterinary nursing Provide medical veterinary nursing Manage veterinary nursing services Perform diagnostic sampling and medical imaging The purpose of this qualification is to prepare individuals as a veterinary nursing care professional by providing them with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to help animals attain, maintain or recover optimal health and quality of life. Graduates will also be able to practice sustainably and to engage in on-going learning in the field. This qualification is targeted at individuals who have already completed the Veterinary Nursing Assistant strand of the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology [Level 5] [Ref: 2490] or equivalent and who seek to further their veterinary nursing education. This qualification will provide individuals with technical veterinary nursing skills in a clinical environment as well as the ability to manage patients and clients, and follow protocols in all aspects of clinical veterinary practice. All costs quoted include GST and student services levy. Fees apply to New Zealand Citizens and New Zealand permanent residents only INDUSTRY-BASED TRAINING Students in the NZ Diploma in Veterinary Nursing must complete work experience commitments as set by the programme co-ordinator. Students will be required to complete 280 hours of clinic work placements. Students will be required to find their own work placements with assistance from programme staff where needed. Work placements should be in two or three week blocks. While on work experience, students must maintain a logbook with evidence of completion of the practical assessments and clinical skills signoff when competent. Students meet with the programme co-ordinator on a regular basis, to discuss progress on the workplace requirements. A memorandum of agreement will be drawn up between the work placement facility, the student and EIT, to define rights and responsibilities of each party involved in the work placements. TIMETABLE Your study time will be made up of online activities and content, tutorials and block courses. Non-contact time (your own individual study time, online learning). CONTACT TIME This programme is online and includes 452 teaching hours over the programme. There will also be 280 work experience hours over the programme. NON-CONTACT TIME Students should plan to spend approximately 468 hours per year of individual study. ADDITIONAL COSTS Compulsory course related costs: $220 required textbook. Transport to work experience where required. Clothing as required for small animal practicals including covered black shoes. Black dress pants for work placements. Accommodation during out of region work placement (if required). Upon completion of diploma studies, academic attire required for the graduation ceremony can be hired at the student s expense.

Or the National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing [Level 5] or equivalent. INFORMATION SHARING SESSION Applicants who meet academic entry may be required to attend an information sharing session if they have achieved their Level 5 qualification with a provider other than EIT. The purpose of this session is to share information about the programme and the applicant and communicate expectations regarding the programme. GOOD CHARACTER REQUIREMENT ALL applicants are required to provide a completed CRIMINAL DECLARATION Form (copy of form is attached). EIT reserves the right to decline entry to the programme should an applicant s police record be such that they would be considered unsuitable for veterinary nursing work. Applicants with convictions for dishonesty or drug offences will likely be considered unsuitable. This requirement applies to every year of enrolment in the programme. The Dean may apply discretion to these regulations in exceptional circumstances. Applicants who do not met all entry requirements will be selected in order of application. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT Applicants must have an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including schooling in New Zealand, successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language, approved scores on IELTS tests or completion of accepted international equivalents. Specific scores for IELTS and New Zealand Certificates in English Language are as follows: IELTS 6.0 Academic (no band score lower than 5.5). NZCEL Level 4 with the Academic endorsement. For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. ENTRY WITH CREDIT You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course. You must apply prior to enrolment. Overall RPL Credit Limit 50% - the programmes maintain the ability to partially credit courses where evidence of current competence is presented. ASSESSMENTS Consists of practical workbook completion for on-campus practicals, completion of work experience log book, assignments, tests, exams and observations, depending on the nature of the course. SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS Scholarships and grants make life easier by helping to cover your fees, other costs and living expenses while you study. You don t always need to be an academic high-flyer to qualify. EIT has a long list of scholarships for which you can apply. So if you would like to get financial help with your study, make sure you find out what s available. You can also take a look online at the givme database available at EIT. It lists every scholarship and grant available in New Zealand. STUDENT SERVICES LEVY The Student Services Levy is a compulsory non-tuition fee that is charged to students enrolled at EIT. The levy is to contribute to the provision of quality student services that support learning. The funds received by EIT from the levy are ring-fenced, meaning they can only be spent on student services. STUDENT LOANS AND ALLOWANCES StudyLink is a service of the Ministry of Social Development.
