THE GLOBAL THINK TANK Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is the oldest international affairs think tank in the United States. Founded by Andrew Carnegie with a gift of $10 million, its charter was to hasten the abolition of war, the foulest blot upon our civilization. While that goal was always unattainable, the Carnegie Endowment has remained faithful to the mission of promoting peaceful engagement. Several defining qualities shine through in Carnegie s history: the consistent excellence of the research; the institution s unusual ability to stay young as it grew in age by regularly reinventing itself to stay ahead of the tide of change in the world; and a determination that its work should produce real change in the real world. The most recent reinvention was the announcement of our Global Vision of 2007, a plan to create the world s first global think tank. Today, with a thriving network of locally staffed centers in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and America, the institution is on its way to achieving that ambitious goal. Those of us, past and present, who have had the great fortune to serve this extraordinary institution can look forward to our second century with a real sense of accomplishment and with the expectation of notable contributions to a more peaceful world yet to come. Jessica T. Mathews President

THE GLOBAL THINK TANK WASHINGTON THE CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT for International Peace was founded in Washington in 1910 and throughout its history it has successfully maintained its nonpartisan stance, providing practical innovative policy solutions to Republican and Democratic administrations alike. Carnegie experts grapple with a range of issues, including nonproliferation, global security and terrorism, developments in Russia, Eurasia, China, and the Middle East, international economics, climate change and energy consumption, and the rising influence of emerging powers and non-state actors.

MOSCOW The Carnegie Moscow Center, established in 1994, was the first public policy research institution of its size and kind in the region. With a staff of over 30 Russians and one American, the Carnegie Moscow Center brings together senior researchers from across the Russian political spectrum and Carnegie s global centers to provide a free and open forum for the discussion and debate of critical national, regional, and global issues. Committed to the principles of international scholarship and objectivity, the Carnegie Moscow Center serves as an exemplar of the contributions that an independent venue for rigorous analysis and debate can make.

BEIJING The Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy is a joint research center based at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Carnegie first established its presence in Beijing in 2004, and in 2010, announced its partnership with Tsinghua University. The Carnegie Tsinghua Center brings together the world s top scholars and experts from China, the United States, and the international community for collaborative research on common global challenges.

BEIRUT The carnegie middle east center has been a recognized source of informed policy research and analysis on the challenges of political and socioeconomic development, peace, and security in the greater Middle East since its establishment in 2006. Based in Beirut, Lebanon, the Middle East Center aims to better inform the process of political change in the Arab world and deepen understanding of the complex economic and security issues that affect it.

BRUSSELS BRUXELLES Carnegie Europe was founded in 2007 and focuses on the external issues that are facing Europe and the European Union. From its recently expanded presence in Brussels and activities in key capitals, Carnegie Europe aims to foster new thinking on the daunting international challenges shaping Europe s role in the world.
