Background South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer & Rancher Achievement Award Rules for 2017-18 Competition The South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation (SCFB) annually conducts a Young Farmer & Rancher (YF&R) Achievement Award competition. Selection of the winning YF&R competitor is based on his/her efforts in production agriculture and leadership achievement. Participation in this program with individual recognition and the resulting publicity will help build the organization. The ideal candidate(s) for the Achievement Award is an individual or couple involved in production agriculture with a majority of his/her income subject to normal production risks. All finalists MUST agree to complete the AFBF AA application and attend the expense-paid AFBF Annual Convention held in 2018 in Nashville, TN, Jan. 6-9, 2018, in the event they are named the State winner(s). The State winner(s) must also be willing, within reason to accept Farm Bureau leadership and/or committee appointments/assignments between the time they are announced as winners and the time the AFBF AA application is due. The SC Farm Bureau Federation (SCFB) Organization Division will coordinate the program. Information about the Achievement Award applicant is requested on the entry form. ALL INFORMATION IS HANDLED IN STRICT CONFIDENCE. Eligibility An applicant can be either an individual or married couple. The applicant may choose to apply individually, rather than as a couple. Applicant(s) shall be a Farm Bureau member(s) between the ages of 18 and 35 in good standing with his/her county Farm Bureau. The applicant(s) shall not turn 36 before January 31, 2018. Applicant(s) must be actively engaged in farming and/or ranching, with the majority of his/her income coming from production agriculture. Applicant(s) may only compete in one national YF&R Competition per year. Past state YF&R Achievement Award winners and/or previous AFBF Achievement Award competitors are not eligible to compete. Current employees of county, state and/or American Farm Bureaus and their affiliates are not eligible to compete. Entry Form & Application Guidelines Do not use applicant s name, the name of his/her state or county, or any names that may bring about the recognition or identification of the applicant s county or state beyond the first-page entry form. For example, if your church name includes the town name, just use [town] Baptist Church. The entry form and application must be completed in first person narrative (i.e. I, me, we, etc.) for questions I-VI. Applicants must use A1 and A2 to denote each applicant for all of question VII, and in 10-point Times New Roman font. Do not use abbreviations or acronyms. Recreating the application on a computer is not allowed; this includes font and format changes, such as bolding. Type within the spaces allotted. The application must be properly signed with no additional pages, including no letters of recommendation or scrapbooks. Each applicant should submit at least five (5) pictures (electronic file only) of his/her/their farm, family and/or involvement. For seasonal farming operations, it is best to submit images of the farm during peak season. The images submitted will be used for a visual presentation of finalists at the SCFB Annual Convention, but will not be used during the judging process. Note: Disregarding any of the guidelines listed above will result in disqualification. Judging The entry form and application of each entry will be coded upon receipt by SCFB. The applicant s name, town or county will not be revealed to the judges until judging of the written applications is completed and finalists are selected. Judging is based on the application sent to SCFB and an on-farm interview that will be scheduled in mid-december 2016. A panel of three qualified judges will select the finalists and state winner. The top three competitors will be visited by the same three judges who reviewed the written applications. On-farm visits will last no longer than 2 hours and are intended to clear up any gray areas which may arise from the written application. The three finalists should understand that their on-farm visit by the judges is for verification/clarification purposes and therefore may affect final rankings. Values used in judging the applications will be: Prizes Farm Operation and Growth: Financial Progress of Operation: Farm Bureau Leadership: Other Leadership: Total: 70 points 60 points 40 points 30 points (Agriculture = 15 points, Community = 10 points, Goals = 5 points) 200 points Achievement Award prizes are sponsored in part by the SC Farm Bureau Federation and Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company.
