COURSE INFORMATION What is NYLT? National Youth Leadership Training is a six-day outdoor experience for Boy Scout Troop and Venture Crew leaders. It is the next step in the BSA training continuum after Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops/Crews. The course teaches Scouts more about leadership through training sessions, group activities and games, and personal challenge. At NYLT, Scouts apply leadership skills in real-world situations to help their patrols achieve success. What is its purpose? Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters and Advisers have the responsibility of training their youth leaders using ILST and ILSC. The purpose of the NYLT program is not to assume that role, but to support it. The objectives of the course are: To give the participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop program. To give participants a basic knowledge of Be-Know-Do leadership model and help relate these skills to their troop roles and responsibilities. To allow Scouts to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops. To create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience Scouting at its best. To enhance the relationship between the participant and his Scoutmaster. To have fun. Scoutmaster s Role The role of the Scoutmaster in the success of this program cannot be overemphasized. First, the Scoutmaster must learn how the program fits with ILST and how it can help the troop. Next, the Scoutmaster must carefully select scouts to participate in the program. The Scoutmaster should attend the orientation meeting in May. The Scoutmaster is also encouraged to be in camp for the closing ceremony which takes place on the Friday evening of the course week. Finally, and most important, the Scoutmaster must support his NYLT trained scouts as they put their newly found leadership skills and knowledge into action back in their home troop. Course Date: July 16-21, 2017 Fees The session fee for each participant will be $250.00. This will cover the cost of food, camp facilities, equipment, insurance, training materials, and recognition items. A deposit of $100 is required when the registration materials are sent. The balance is due prior to July 16, 2017 or the space will be given to a scout on the waiting list. The council refund policy is in effect. Each Scout will receive two T-shirts, patch, hat and neckerchief. Some scholarship money is available based on need and first come, first served. Inquire with J.D. Carruthers for additional information. Equipment We will send an equipment list to each Scout with their letter of acceptance. The course requires a complete summer uniform, including official BSA shorts/pants and shirt. A belt and footwear

appropriate for camping, walking, and hiking are also required. We will provide detailed information at the spring orientation meeting. Registration materials are included in this packet. Mail registration materials with deposits to: Blue Grass Council, BSA National Youth Leader Training 2134 Nicholasville Rd Lexington KY 40503 To secure your position on the course, fill out and return this application by May 1, 2017. We will accept the first 48 applications. We will not accept incomplete registration packets. The applicant, a parent or legal guardian, and the Scoutmaster must sign the registration form. A $100 deposit must be included to be accepted for the course. Do not send deposits for alternates. In order that as many units as possible be involved in NYLT, a troop is encouraged to send 4 scouts to NYLT. Each troop will only be allowed a total of 4 scouts to attend. EACH TROOP SHOULD NOT SEND MORE THAN 4 APPLICATIONS. Once all registration materials are received, written confirmation of reservations will be mailed to the youth and listed Scoutmaster. The staff reserves the right to accept or reject an applicant based on the application(s) submitted. If the applicant is not accepted, you may be allowed to select another Scout or discuss the merits of your first choice. On Sunday, June 4, 2017, all accepted Scouts, their parents, and Scoutmasters must attend an orientation meeting. This meeting is very important to the success of the course. All fees must be paid July 16, 2017. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE The requirements that have been established by the Council Training Committee to allow all Scouts the opportunity to derive the most benefit from this course are: 1. Be at least 13 years old by the start of the course. 2. Be at least First Class Scout. 3. Have completed the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops found in the Scoutmaster s Handbook (#33009) or in the separate Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops Manual (#511016). 4.
