Volunteerism SERVICE LEARNING Community Involvement

Established in 2004, the Center for Civic Engagement allows Ivy Tech Bloomington to model a service-oriented learning environment that promotes service learning, volunteerism and community involvement for our students, faculty and staff. This model benefits the south central lndiana community, in which more than 90 percent of our graduates choose to live, work and raise families. defining Chancellor John Whikehart Civic Engagement Though civic engagement can be defined in a number of ways, civic engagement at Ivy Tech Community College - Bloomington can best be defined by the actions of its students, faculty and staff: A staff member travels 1,446.7 miles to volunteer in an impoverished village in a foreign country. A member of our faculty designs a service learning course that will influence many students, as well as the community members they serve. A staff member helps set up for Picnic with the Pops, a community event held on our campus every summer. A student gives an hour a week to a local wildlife rescue center. Since 2004, The Center for Civic Engagement at Ivy Tech - Bloomington has provided students, faculty and staff with opportunities for civic engagement through volunteerism, service learning and community involvement. Ivy Tech - Bloomington has taken part in countless volunteer projects, offered hundreds of service learning classes, and delivered a wide variety of national speakers to the Ivy Tech - Bloomington campus, including George McGovern, Birch Bayh, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Lee Hamilton, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Mrs. Laura W. Bush, and James Carville and Mary Matalin to name a few. Whether you are a member of the community, or a member of the Ivy Tech family, we encourage you to get involved in your community; on your own, or through one of the many programs offered through the Center for Civic Engagement. Civic Engagement Goals 1. Support the development of service learning. 2. Encourage faculty, staff, and student participation in volunteerism. 3. Use the institutional resources of Ivy Tech to promote civic engagement. 4. Promote civic engagement successes for community and internal awareness. 5. Foster knowledge and understanding of civic engagement throughout our campus community and share our knowledge and experiences with other academic entities.

Volunteerism Volunteerism is a decision made by an individual to dedicate time to any organization that provides a community service. Faculty & Staff The Center for Civic Engagement encourages faculty, staff and student participation in volunteerism. The Center serves as the Bloomington campus central point of contact on volunteerism and community involvement opportunities. Ivy Tech Bloomington offers release time for faculty and staff who are interested in volunteering during normal business hours and encourages volunteerism at all other times. Ivy Tech Students for Engagement Ivy Tech Students for Engagement (ITSE) was established in 2010 with the goal of performing one group volunteer project a month. Past projects have included trail upkeep for Sycamore Land Trust, book packaging for Pages to Prisoners, and water purifier building for New Life International. Volunteer Fair The annual volunteer fair exposes Ivy Tech students to the wealth of services and volunteer opportunities available through the regional nonprofit community in south central Indiana.

Service Learning Service learning is an experiential learning opportunity formally incorporated into the curriculum of each academic program. It combines community service with preparation and reflection, and it emphasizes an understanding of civic responsibility. Tax Preparation Assistance During tax season, accouting students prepare taxes at no cost to the community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. In 2011, more than 550 returns were filed at Ivy Tech Bloomington. The Life Story project Water quality testing The Life StorY Project Sociology students visited Bell Trace Senior Living Community and recorded video interviews of residents to be handed down to their families. The project is a learning experience for students about cultural diversity, and also benefits residents of Bell Trace and their families. First-Aid Training Nursing students provided basic first-aid training to elementary school students in Monroe County Schools. Students taught choking and minor injury prevention.

Dr. Emily Bobo s poetry students hold a ceremony for Boys and Girls Club poetry workshop participants. Dr. Emily Bobo on Service Learning I like to use service learning in my courses because it encourages students to apply the academic concepts they are learning in class to real-time activities and situations. It makes their education feel more real. Poetry Workshops Poetry students hosted poetry workshops at Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc., and New Tech High School. To describe these projects, Ivy Tech student Rachel Glusenkamp said, Many kids see poetry as a lost art or something only adults can do. We are opening their lives to more opportunities. Maybe this will change the way they see poetry. Water Quality Testing Environmental science students conduct water quality testing experiments on the Bean Blossom Creek Watershed. Students start to realize that someone will actually make use of the data they collect, said instructor Sarah Cote. Cote received a BRAVO community service award in 2010 from the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department. Cooking for community kitchen Culinary arts students prepared an evening meal for Community Kitchen. Student chefs prepared seasoned roasted potatoes, green beans provencal and herbed roasted chicken and some chicken stock. Their meal served approximately 240 people. Alternative Spring Break The Alternative Spring Break program, established in 2007, is a week of service learning in a community outside of Bloomington, and requires reflection activities.

Alternative Spring Break A week-long service learning opportunity in a community outside of Bloomington In March of 2007, 12 people from Ivy Tech Bloomington embarked on the first Alternative Spring Break trip to Radford, Virginia to work with local after school programs, help build a Habitat for Humanity house and clean up a historic cemetery. In 2008-2011, the ASB program traveled to the small village of Calnali, Mexico. Students poured concrete floors for dirt floor houses, and visited elementary schools to deliver donations of childrens shoes and clothing. Passing out shoes to the children was probably the most life changing event for me. One girl had on shoes that were two sizes too small. Her feet were black with dirt and had swollen over the top of the shoe. I finaly found a pair that would work. She smiled, took them off, and put the small ones back on. She said she did not want to wear them out. - Larry Weaver, student The part I was most worried about was the fact that I was going to Mexico for over a week with 13 other people whom I had met roughly 3 times. I think that is part of what makes the trip. You have to rely on one another. The trip was more life changing than words can describe. - Justin Adams, student

Picnic with the Pops Community Involvement Community involvement is Ivy Tech Bloomington s participation in the public life of our service area through the planned use of our institutional resources. Participation supports the common good of the community and the institutional mission of Ivy Tech Community College. Picnic with the Pops Picnic with the Pops. Ivy Tech hosts a huge crowd that fills the lawn for a night of music and fireworks on a weekend before the 4th of July. In addition to providing the space, Ivy Tech also provides facility support, marketing and volunteers. Snowflake Holiday party Ivy Tech hosts the annual Snowflake Holiday Party for the children of IU Health Bloomington Hospital s children s therapy clinic. Ivy Tech provides student volunteers who spend an entire day transforming the first floor of the main building into a winter wonderland. 500 individuals come through the building for this event.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend on the Center for Civic Engagement Being a part of the O Bannon Institute for Community Service in 2007 was inspirational. Because of the Institute, I was fortunate enough to visit Ivy Tech - Bloomington, and what I saw was awesome. The students are passionate about community service because they realized that they could make a difference. They will graduate knowing first hand the happiness of solving problems, helping others and improving the life of the community. The Center for Civic Engagement makes it possible for students to learn how much they can do. I hope others will have the opportunity to be involved. Science Fair and Robotics Competition Traditionally, Ivy Tech hosts a nine county regional science fair for grades 7 12. In 2011, Ivy Tech hosted the statewide science fair. Ivy Tech also hosts the Bloomington Robotics Club competition for area middle and high-school students. In 2010, approximately 250 students plus teachers and parents from 35 different schools and organizations attended the event. Participants also collected over 750 lbs of canned goods which were donated to Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Children s Expo The City of Bloomington Children s Expo was held at Ivy Tech in 2010 and 2011. Early Childhood Education courses assisted with the logistics of the event. This event provides free health screenings for children ages 5 and younger, as well as information on services for children and families. In 2010, the Early Childhood Education classes contributed more than 275 service learning to the event, and were awarded a BRAVO award from the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation. O Bannon Institute for Community Service The O Bannon Institute, named after the late Governor Frank O Bannon, is an annual conference dedicated to community service, service learning and civic engagement. The Institute kicks off with a campuswide Day of Service, and the annual civic engagement awards. Awards recognize Ivy Tech students, faculty and staff and a community partner for excellence in service learning and volunteerism. Recipients receive a $500 stipend. Leaders from the nonprofit, higher education and political arenas are brought together with the community to discuss issues related to public service. Previous speakers have included Judy O Bannon, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Joe and Maggie Kernan, Birch Bayh, Alan Simpson, George McGovern, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Arianna Huffington and James Carville and Mary Matalin.
