Bring a toy for our Toys for Tots drive and a wrapped gift for the gift exchange (one gift per family). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Marite or John Ozols at 864 973 4691. DEC 2015 We look forward to seeing you there! The Hartwell Christmas Parade will be Sunday, 13 December. The parade starts at 1500. Helpers should be there at 1400. New Member Orientation Karen Hublou Nine guests attended our New Member Orientation and complimentary lunch at The Lighthouse Restaurant in October. In attendance were Bruce & Andrea Schober, Elizabeth Lashley, Sue Dragoo, Tom Wippermann, Nancy & Jim Hackett, and Patty & Skip Wharton. Also in attendance were Ed Lashley, Ron Osburn, Brian Hackley, Teri Zahn and Jim & Karen Hublou. These presenters provided information as to the different benefits and facets of our organization. We welcome our newest members and hope they found the orientation both helpful and enjoyable. www.gclsaps.com Page 2 December 2015

Change of Watch A Night of Fun, Ceremony and Awards Jim Hublou, AP The Magnolia Manner in Walhalla was the venue for our squadron s 14 th annual Change of Watch. Our co-hosts, Kathy Redford and Karen Hublou did a great job and as the saying goes a good time was had by all. The new Bridge was sworn in by D/Lt/C John Ozols and the old Bridge thereafter dismissed (even though many members of the old Bridge are on the new Bridge). Ed Lashley, after immediately changing out his name tag from Commander to Past Commander, presented the following awards: Catch the Spirit Ron Osburn Certificate of Educational Proficiency Marv Bromley Order of the Mariner Kathy Redford VSC Award Ron Osburn Holzhauer Award - Ron Osburn Commander s Cup- Ben Bee NOAA Co-op Charting Honor Roll: GCL Squadron - #3 Nationally Individuals and their national ranking on the Co-Op Charting Honor Roll: Ben Bee #12 Horst Boettge #14 Temple Meek #37 Ed Lashley #38 George Schiller #56 Ruth Ann Bee #107 Kathy Redford #147 Susan Meek #151 John Ozols #156 AG Caldwell #167 Don Redford #169 Jim Snowden # 196 Marlyn Stroven #201 Pam Stroven won drawing for free night at Magnolia Manor. Congratulations to all of you, and we wish you the best in the forthcoming year. The festivities and eating continued on Saturday with the Commander s Brunch at the OLLI Cheezem Education Center. Though we were without lights, it was still a good time. (pictured) Ed Lashley is happy to get his Past Commander s flag! www.gclsaps.com Page 3 December 2015

Bridge Reports Safety Report Safe Boating As We Age As boaters, we need to be ever mindful of traits or conditions which might impede our boating skills such as forgetfulness, vision impairment, slowed reaction times, unsteadiness and hearing issues. To ensure safe boating, you might need some new boating habits, altering the boat or repositioning the gear. Some examples of some smart solutions are as follows: Always use notes and checklists for shutting the boat down, starting her up and for all important procedures aboard, especially for operating infrequentlyused equipment. Always bring a mate along to be your ears in hard-to-hear Mary Ann Caldwell, P situations and someone who can operate your boat if need be. Reduce long trips. Leave earlier. Arrive earlier. Add extra handholds so you can grab for every step you take on a pitching boat. Add safety lines, rails, or higher rails. Add nonskid surfaces. Wear your life jacket. The most important thing is to stay in shape. Boating does not get more difficult as we age, we just do everything slower. Be safe and enjoy boating for many years to come! Education Report The GCL plans two ABC-3 classes the first half of 2016. Class One: When: Five Thursdays, 7, 14, 21, 28 Jan and 4 Feb Where: Oconee Room, Oconee Memorial Hospital Time: 1630 to 1830 Class Two: When: Five Thursdays, 31 Mar; 7, 14, 21, 28 Apr Where: Oconee Room, Oconee Memorial Hospital Time: 1630 to 1830 Marlyn Stroven, SN Cost: $30 for the manual (no charge for the class) which can be shared by family members. Pre-registration required two weeks in advance. Contact: Marlyn Stroven 864-985-0788 or mjstroven@bellsouth.net Please pass this information to any friends and neighbors who may be interested. www.gclsaps.com Page 7 December 2015

Bridge Reports Executive Report Ron Osburn, SN The arrival of winter brings colder, shorter days in the months ahead. Our boats have been put to bed for a long winters nap and the only water we will get in is our hot tub. Reflecting back, we have had a very good, fun-filled productive year. Serving as the Executive Officer has been an honor. I appreciate the efforts, leadership and dedication of my committee chairs. Public Relations Penny Barrow VSC Ben Bee Co-op Charting George Schiller Safety Mary Ann Caldwell Homeland Security Jurgen Kleinau We will have some challenges in the coming year with several positions yet to be filled. Our world is changing. The tried and true methods of growing our membership do not work as well as they used to. We must adopt new strategies. Bringing in new members and retaining the members we have are still priorities in USPS. Weather Class Wrap Up Gene Kunkel, SN Five students enrolled in this year s elective Weather course. The course was offered through the OLLI program for non-usps members as well as squadron members. One student was from GCL and four attended through OLLI. Three students took the final exam; and all passed, with one having perfect score. Look again next August for another offering of the Weather course. www.gclsaps.com Page 8 December 2015
