Salary and Demographic Survey Results

Executive Summary In April of 2013, GPA conducted a salary and demographic survey of grant professionals. The survey was distributed to all active GPA members and posted to the GPA website; 284 responses were received. This response rate is helpful in generalizing the results of the survey to the population of grant professionals as a whole, as well as guarding the results from statistical anomalies, making the results more accurate. This is the seventh annual survey of its kind. In 2013, the GPA Salary Survey was expanded to collect demographic information of responding grant professionals as well as data on proposals funded versus proposals written. New data points and a strong response rate provide answers to the question, Who is a typical grant professional? Earns $60,870.01 per year as a full-time employee and receives benefits (96%) Feels very well (14%) or fairly (52%) compensated for the work s/he performs Writes 11-20 grant proposals a year States that s/he has a funding success rate of 51%-75% Female (82.4%), between 51 and 55 years old (17.3%), and White/Non-Hispanic (81.3%) Holds a Bachelor s Degree (37.7%) in Art (9.8%), Business Administration (9%), Education (7.4%), English (14.8%), Political Science (10.7%) Holds a Graduate or Professional Degree (57.4%) Works typically as a Grant Coordinator (proposal development and grants/project/fiscal management 29.6%) or a Grant Proposal Writer (writes proposal, includes research, budget preparation & evaluation 37.3%) Is Employed full-time in a job where all or most of his/her functions are related to grants (84.2%) Works in an urban area (59.6%) Has been in the grants field for 3-5 years (27.9%) or 5-10 years (25%) and considers him or herself advanced with regard to skill level (74.5%) Works for a nonprofit agency (27.6%), government agency (local, state or federal 13.6%), college/university/research institute (13.6%) or K-12 Education (public or private -9%) Works for a very well-established (88.1%) large sized agency (43.7%) that employs approximately 1,481 Fulltime Equivalents (FTEs) with an annual operating budget of more than $20 million (56.7%), at which approximately five individuals work within the grant department or profession. i

Concentrates on writing proposals to private foundations (37.43%), the Federal government (24.83%), corporations (12.74%), local governments (9.18%) and state governments (16.38%) Additional key finding include: While there was a difference in salary by race ($72,500 Asian, $85,000 Bi-Racial, and $60,086 White/Non-Hispanic), it is noted that were only two Asian and five Bi-Racial survey respondents, compared to 204 White/Non-Hispanic respondents. There are strong positive correlations between salary and age, years of experience, skill level, size of organization, and degree of establishment of organization. There are no apparent correlations between salary and an individual s proposal success rate or the percentage of an organization s annual operating budget that is comprised of grants. There are no apparent correlations between success rate and skill level or success rate by size or organization. There are no apparent correlations between proposal success rates and years in the grants field. There are no significant changes between the results from last year to this. ii

Salary by State, Region, and Type of Area Please note that in 2010, 34 states had two or more respondents. In 2011, that number dropped to 29. All states with fewer than two respondents were not considered. In 2011, Pennsylvania had the highest average salary at $118,750, with the District of Columbia in second at $112,500, and Minnesota in third at $78,125. In 2013, the District of Columbia had the highest average salary at $110,000.50, with Rhode Island in second at $97,500.00, and Massachusetts in third at $82,500.00. Please note, that Rhode Island had only one respondent so the results are slightly skewed. Removing Rhode Island would make the next top state, Wisconsin with an average salary of $76,250.00. Pennsylvania s average salary decreased significantly in the last two years but there were also five additional respondents. The three states with the lowest salaries in 2011 were Tennessee ($44,500), Indiana ($41,666), and Wyoming ($40,000). In 2013, Missouri ($48.863), Oklahoma ($47,500), and Vermont ($47,500) had the lowest salaries of those with more than one respondent. First the first year ever, the Pacific States were not the highest paid region. The Northeast came in as the highest paid with an average of $68,937 with the Pacific States second with an average salary of $63,571. The Rocky Mountain Region was the lowest paid ($49,167) grant professionals. The rest of the regions average salary remained between consistent since 2011. 33
