Digital mammography will allow SHA to provide its patients with the highest quality of care in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Digital mammography takes less than half the time of traditional filmbased exams and the radiologist may review the Margaret Isbell images while the patient is in the exam room. To supplement this technology SHA incorporated computer aided detection (CAD). CAD highlights characteristics associated with breast cancer. CAD is, in essence, a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist s evaluation.

APRIL JUNE 2009 GAUZETTE PAGE 5 Respiratory Care s New Technology Will Enhance Critical Patient Care The respiratory care department has recently purchased a new adult ventilator. From a technical standpoint this ventilator allows the therapist to enter multiple ventilator adjustments more rapidly. The Puritan Bennett 840 ventilator offers one of the newest modes of ventilation for the treatment of adult respiratory distress syndrome. Recent ventilator capabilities should decrease the need for patient sedation and also decrease the patient s time requiring mechanical ventilation. Dr. Thomas Evans and Lisa Scruggs, CRT, evaluating the new Puritan Bennett 840 Ventilator We are excited to offer these technological advances to our patients requiring mechanical ventilator care. Factors that can worsen exercise-induced asthma include: 1. Cold weather 2. Dry air 3. Air pollution such a smoke or smog 4. High pollen counts 5. Having a respiratory infection such as a cold 6. Being out of shape 7. Chemicals such as chlorine, paint, fertilizers or herbicides Employees Honored by Tennessee Technology Center Wendy Blair, RN, Sue Bright LPN, Shelly Miller, C.PhT, and Patti Thompson, PhD. were honored for their outstanding support and interest of the students rotating through Sweetwater Hospital. The awards were presented at an Shelly Miller and Patti Thompson Advisory and Scholarship program held on May 7, 2009. Patti Thompson and Shelly Miller were asked to join the Advisory committee for the Pharmacy Technician program. SHA is proud to promote the involvement of our employees in the many programs across the state. SHA employees are very active in our community through their leadership, support and participation with local programs. We want to thank all those that are involved and encourage them to continue helping others in our Wendy Blair, RN community. SHA Wishes Dr. Hays Well on His Retirement Dr. Danny Hays joined the Medical Staff of Sweetwater Hospital in December 1981 as a Radiologist in the Radiology Department. Dr. Hays maintained Active Staff Privileges until 2006 at which time he decided to cut back to Courtesy Staff. Danny Hays, MD Radiologist His years of dedication and service have been greatly appreciated and he has been an asset to our staff. Dr. Hays was a family practice physician in Athens in previous years. He had the largest practice in Athens where he was also Mayor and was one of the owners of Epperson Hospital. He currently serves on the Board of Tennessee Wesleyan College. Dr. Hays contributions to SHA provided valuable services for many years to this community. Thank you Dr. Hays for the many years of loyalty to SHA. We all wish you the best in retirement.

Return on the same route and pat yourself on the back for completing this difficult but rewarding hike! What a great hike to commemorate the anniversary of our national park. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the national park while standing on the stone terrace just above the trail head. The park memorializes the five million dollar donation made by Laura Spelmen Rockfeller Memorial Fund for purchasing park land. The trail starts out with a steep incline on the famous Appalachian Trail. Hike the AT for 2.7 miles. At this junction, the Boulevard Trail splits off to the left and begins a 5.3 mile trail to Mt. LeConte which is the third highest point in the national park. Keep to the right at this junction on the AT. At 3.6 miles you will be able to see Charlie's Bunion ahead. At 4 miles, the AT continues off to the right. The path to the left will lead you to the Bunion with a 360 degree view. Scramble onto the rocks to get spectacular views of Mount Kepart, Mount LeConte, Brushy Mountain and Porter's Creek Valley. Use extreme caution climbing on the rocks as WHERE: CHARLIE'S BUNION LENGTH: 4 MILES ONE WAY RATED: MODERATE DIRECTIONS: THROUGH PIGEON FORGE TOWARD GATLINGBURG, TAKE GATLINGBURG BYPASS TO RIGHT AND FOLLOW TO NEWFOUND GAP ROAD. Quickly wash any areas of your skin that has come into contact with poison ivy. You have about ten minutes to remove the oil before a reaction will develop. Also wash any clothing that has come into contact with the plants to prevent spreading the oil and scrub under your child's fingernails. For mild reactions, you can use calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream, an oral antihistamine, oatmeal baths and cool soaks. More severe reactions will require evaluation by your doctor, who can prescribe an oral steroid or a stronger topical steroid cream. Oral steroids will need to be taken and slowly tapered over two weeks to prevent recurrence of the reaction. Carefully remove poison ivy plants when they are found. Avoid burning them, as the smoke can cause a very severe reaction to anyone who is exposed to it. SHA celebrated National hospital week with special activities for patients and employees. SHA always wants to recognize the importance of the patients who trust their lives to our care and the employees who have committed their lives to care for those who need health care. Ramona Gibson & Joe Anderson Each employee and patient was given commemorative gifts to say thank you for those who entrust their care to SHA and those who give tirelessly to the organization and community.
