It illuminates life's pathway, spreads good cheer, and is worth a high price" (Paul Harris) Submitted by Galen Coffman June is Fellowship month in Rotary and is an integral part of the RI convention. There are 66 recognized Fellowships and more forming! The oldest and largest is the Yachting Fellowship formed in 1947. Currently there are over 3,000 members in 100 Fleets and active in 18 countries. My motivation for setting that goal was the realization that in spite of how generous our District Rotarians are in annual giving, that coming changes in the Rotary Foundation will mean that we must supplement the income we receive from annual giving in order to be able to continue to fund the smaller ($25,000 to $50,000) international projects that we have been so successful with. With eight million in realized bequests we will receive an annual amount equal to what we currently receive, on average, from our annual giving. You obviously agree with my thinking. As of mid May here is where we stand. We have more new Benefactors than we have had in the previous three years combined. We have more new Bequest Society Members than we have had in the past four years combined. Among the 531 Districts in the world WE RANK NUMBER 13 for new gifts to the Permanent Fund. MAHALO for answering the call and congratulations on raising the bar. Just one last request. Many of you have told me that you have remembered The Rotary Foundation in your wills, but have not advised them PLEASE DO. You merely have to fill out a simple Benefactor or Bequest Society form. If your bequest is a percentage of your estate instead of a specific amount, then you just have to estimate what that value would currently be. You do not need to supply a copy of your will. 2
Group Study Exchange (GSE) Approximately 50 Maui Rotarians recently hosted three of the four GSE team members at the King Kamehameha Golf Club on May 26, 2010. The GSE team traveled to Thailand earlier in February/ March 2010, led by PDG Hal Darcey, GSE team leader. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE Rotary Club of Downtown Honolulu 2010-2011 International Project (Submitted by Kimberly Fujiuchi ) Holy Cow!!! Two weeks ago, Sammy Leseita, shared a few minutes about his life and the plight of his Sambaru village (Africa). At last week s meeting, the club agreed to donate the happy dollars from the 14th and 21st towards the purchase of some cows as our international project for Jim Wriston s year (2010-2011). To date, seven members have pledged to purchase cows, we also have $180 in happy dollars to contribute to the cause. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE Dental Mission to The Marshall Islands Rotary Club of Wahiawa-Waialua (excerpted from report submitted by David Bramlett) The Rotary Club of Wahiawa-Waialua is changing lives and futures as a result of their ongoing, two week dental mission project to a remote area of the Marshall Islands a former trust territory of the United States, now an independent nation where dental care is virtually non-existent for most Marshallese. In fact, the focus of the team s work has been on the islet of Ebeye in the Kwajalein Atoll, where approximately 15,000 people live on the 1/10th of a square mile islet. About 70% of the population are children, the target of the dental work. The club is the focal point for planning, coordinating, and seeking wider Rotary The Rotary Club of Wahiawa sends Dr. Nora Harmsen, DDS, who volunteers her time and professional skills to lead the mission. She was assisted by a Rotary volunteer on the first iteration in 2005, by a community volunteer in 2006, and by a trained dental hygienist on subsequent trips. The dental team carries a portable dental kit to the more remote locations throughout the Kwajalein Atoll to insure care for all. In 2005, Dr. Nora and her team traveled throughout the Kwajalein Atoll, treating patients in not only Ebeye, but also Gugeegue (by vehicle over the causeway connecting Ebeye and Gugeegue) and Ennibur (by Army fixed wing aircraft to Roi Namur, then by barge). In 9 days, they treated over 158 children with the following results: all children received fluoride treatments; dental care included194 sealed teeth, 78 fillings, 98 extractions, 34 cleanings, one root canal, and one partial denture. Using the fee schedule for general practice in Honolulu, the team provided free dental care valued well in excess of $50,000. Since then, other Rotary Clubs have joined to sponsor the effort, with the Rotary Club of the Waianae Coast being a partner from 2005-2010. Other Clubs joining in different years are Mililani Sunrise (2006-2010), Kapolei (2006, 2007), and Lahaina Sunrise (2008). Participating Clubs donate money or collect dental supplies. Since its inception, Dr. Nora Harmsen and a volunteer assistant has performed more than $549,000 of free dental care for the children and inhabitants of the Marshall islands! In 2010, Dr. Harmsen and her dental hygienist, Ms. Jinky Agtarap, traveled to 5 islands in the Kwajalein Atoll Ebeye, Roi Namur, Ennibur, Carlos, and Kwajalein during the period January 29- February 12, 2010. During that time, the team saw 343 patients (mostly children), performed 1282 sealants, 296 single surface fillings, 73 two surface fillings, 6 three surface fillings, 4 four surface fillings, 57 extractions, 35 pulp caps, 92 prophylaxis, 71 varnishes, 7 pulpotomies, and 3 peridontal scalings The Rotary Club of Wahiawa-Waialua gives many thanks to the five Rotary Cubs involved in this project and to their community partners, such as Continental Airlines and their subsidiary Continental Micronesia for their extraordinary donations of airline tickets and excess baggage. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE: Rotary Club of Poipu Beach (Submitted by Annette Nishimoto) Making a difference in peoples lives is one of Rotary's mission. Poipu Beach Rotarians helped make a difference by improving health care in Cebu, Philippines. On Saturday, May 8, Rotary members loaded a shipping container full of medical equipment and humanitarian aide. Emergency crash carts, cardiac monitors, bandaging supplies, catheters and other medical supplies, that were donated by Wilcox Hospital, are being sent to the Vicente Soto Memorial Hospital in Cebu, Philippines. Books, clothing, wheelchairs and walkers donated by the Kauai community were used to fill in the empty spaces in the shipping container. All of this happened because of the magic of Rotary. What started out with a few Poipu Rotarians participating in a Rotaplast mission to Cebu a few years ago, has blossomed into a ongoing relationship benefiting the poor in Cebu. Our sister club, the Rotary Club of Cebu-Port Center will be the recipient of the shipping container in the Philippines. They will be facilitating the distribution of the donated supplies to the hospital. Wilcox Hospital, which has a sister hospital relationship with Vicente Soto Memorial Hospital, donated the fully functional but retired equipment and medical supplies. Funds to transport the equipment were donated by an Evslin Foundation grant to the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach Foundation. Guardian Storage donated the storage space while all the goods were being stockpiled. Poipu Rotarians donated the muscle to load the container in record-breaking time. A major thank you needs to go to Past President D.Q. Jackson for planning and organizing this worthwhile international service project. Rotary makes a difference! 6

It s Spring food/ fund drive was a success! They met their goal of raising $10,000 in donations and almost 2,000 pounds of food from a one-day effort of their Fish Netting Fundraising at 6 of Kauai s favorite shopping centers and markets. With the help from community volunteers, they would like to thank all Rotary club members who participated in the food/fund drive and to the participating markets and shopping center. 7
