Wilcox-Hildreth Public School News Views http://whfalcons.org NOVEMBER, 2016 FROM THE FALCON S PERCH - Justin Patterson, Principal Each spring students take the NeSA tests and each fall the State releases the scores from those tests to the public. I am quite happy to report that our scores have risen since last year. Higher scores show that the staff and student body have worked hard over the last year to improve. The NeSA tests measures academic performance in reading, math, science and writing. Students in grades 3-8 11 are tested each year. This year our students showed improvements in several subject areas. Our average reading score increased from an 81% to 85% students meeting or exceeding standards. In math our average scores increased from 65% to 80% of students meeting or exceeding standards. Our average science score dipped slightly from 73% to 68% of our students meeting exceeding standards. In the spring of 2015 students took a writing assessment but those scores were not released to districts or to the public. In the spring of 2016 students once again took the writing portion of the NeSA test and 65% of students tested are meeting or exceeding standards. Moving on to another topic I would like to congratulate the fall sports teams and fall activities as their seasons have concluded. I would also like to wish the winter sports teams and winter activity programs good luck in their upcoming seasons.

SCHOOL STUFF Red Ribbon Week Fun The high school was able to model how important it is to make good choices to the elementary students during Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is the last week of October and focuses on the importance of making good decisions and being drug free. Several high school students helped with crafts in the elementary, and some of our athletes were able to eat lunch with the students and sign autographs. Successful Apply to College Event The seniors celebrated a big step in their lives, applying to college At our first Apply to College Event, all of the seniors were able to work on college applications, resumes, and scholarships. At the end of the event, thirty-one college applications were submitted. To celebrate, we ended our event with root beer floats, and all of the seniors were able to take a picture as a keepsake to this important step in their lives. Counselor Updates: November 2016 College Visit Days A lot of times students are very stressed out about where they would like to go after high school. One of the best options to help you and your student decide on a post secondary institution is to go on a college visit. Juniors are allowed one day to go on a college visit, where seniors get two days. Take advantage of this opportunity because many college tours allow parents and students to talk to not only the professor of a field they are interested in, but you can also make an appointment with a representative from the Financial Aid Office to discuss how to pay for college with loans and scholarships. To go on a visit, your student needs to hand in the signed College Visit form, located in my office at least five days in advance before the visit. Most college visits can be set up online. Have your student stop by if he/she needs help, and I am glad to assist 4
