Social networking is the word-of-mouth" of today. This session demonstrates how sites are used to promote health messages and highlights examples of local initiatives utilizing this technology, evaluation of these initiatives, and lessons learned. Teaching Health Behavior Counseling Using a Standardized Patient Heather Wagenschutz, MA Case Manager/Educator, University of Michigan Medical School Standardized patients have been used in medical school education to help facilitate better content and communication skills development. The field has expanded to include health educators using these face to face simulations which allow participants to practice/learn key health behavior counseling skills in areas like nutrition/exercise counseling and tobacco cessation. This session will explore advantages and its use in health education. 2. Ecopsychology The Health Educator s Role in Environmental Health Mark Minelli, PhD, MA, MPA Central Michigan University, School of Health Sciences Ecopsychology is a critical inquiry that asks how and in what directions can we move beyond simply treating symptoms of the world s growing number of social and environmental crises. According to Healthy People 2010, An estimated 25 percent of preventable illnesses worldwide can be attributed to poor environmental quality. Dr. Minelli will engage health educators to play an active role in environmental health issues. 2:00-3:00 pm Breakout Sessions 1. Leveraging Web Technology for Tracking, Planning and Disseminating Public Health Information Suzanne Weinert, MEd, CHES, Leigh-Anne Stafford, MSA Public Health Educators, Oakland County Health Division A comprehensive web-based Health and Human Services Communication Portal has improved public health practice at OCHD. The portal has automated and simplified communicable disease reporting, provides a mechanism for risk/crisis communication and offers a centralized location to store community resources. 2. The Ideal Family Practice: A University-Health Care Provider Partnership to Enhance Patient Education Jodi Brookins-Fisher, PhD, CHES, Marty Malcolm, MA, Irene O Boyle, PhD, CHES Central Michigan University, School of Health Sciences Participants will learn about a university-health care provider partnership designed to increase patient education and capacity to deal with their own health care issues. Utilization of a patient needs assessment to determine learning style and health needs as compared to provider perception of patient education needs will be explored. 3:00 pm Break with Exhibitors / Silent Auction 3:15 pm Keynote Address: True Health Care Reform Won t Happen Without You Dean Sienko, MD, MS Health Officer and Medical Director, Ingham County Health Department Dr. Sienko will discuss the importance of health educators as we move into the future under health care reform.
