2018-2019 UCI XIV Dalai Lama Scholarship Background. In April 2004, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, world-renowned spiritual leader and recipient of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, visited UC Irvine to discuss ethical leadership and personal responsibility in the new millennium. In 2005, the UC Irvine XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of His Holiness' visit. His Holiness returned to the UCI campus for a visit in 2011 and then for a Global Compassion Summit honoring his 80 th birthday from July 5-7, 2015.
