on National Conference on Challenges for Civil Engineering due to Environmental Degradation (CCEED-2012) Date: 18 th & 19 th February, 2012. Venue: Birbhum Institute of Engineering & Technology, Suri, Birbhum Jointly organized by Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Chemistry & Environmental Sciences Birbhum Institute of Engineering & Technology, Suri, Birbhum. In technical association with Institute of Public Health Engineers, India 1
About the Conference: In the contemporary world where conventional development process is facing a question mark regarding its environmental impact, Sustainable Development has become the key phrase in every sphere of human activity, be it the domain of economics, policies of Governments or the field of modern scientific inventions. The efforts are quite visible worldwide to redefine economic activities in such ways that will be directed towards optimum exploitation of natural resources and will cause minimum environmental pollutions and hazards. Civil engineering, being that branch of engineering, which deals with the basic needs of human civilization, need to cope up effectively and efficiently with this concept. Development and economic prosperity of any society inevitably manifests itself in enormous installations and constructions of Civil engineering structures. They contribute towards the degradation of environment in a significant way. Naturally the challenge to adopt new methodologies and explore new technologies which will not only make eco-friendly engineering possible but will also actively participate towards pollution control is a demanding one. The present conference is expected to provide a platform for discussions and interactions that will throw some light towards existing and modern technological advances in Civil Engineering, which will minimize the effect of environmental degradation. The ideas and the result of the research works towards this direction will contribute to the academia and industry. The conference includes paper presentation, poster contest and invited lecture sessions chaired by renowned professors in the field of civil and environmental engineering. About the Institute: Established by Indian Centre for Advancement of Research and Education ( ICARE), Birbhum under the Chairmanship of Shri Somnath Chatterjee, Hon'ble Speaker of the 14th Loksabha and the Vice Chairmanship of Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon'ble Finance Minister, Govt.of India. BIET started functioning from 1999 under the Chairmanship of Legendary Indologist and Educationist Professor Padmashri Late Ramaranjan Mukherjee. The Institute is being run as a non-profit organization with active Guidance from eminent academician like Professor Amitabha Ghosh, Former Director, IIT Kharagpur who is presently the Chairman of Board of Governors and other social workers and philanthropists from the District and around.we are privileged to have Professor Ajoy Ray, VC, BESU as an eminent member of Board of Governors. Situated at the sprawling picturesque Techno-Complex of 30 acres at Suri, BIET emerged as the pioneer Engineering Institute in Birbhum. It is proud to receive aids from the Government of West Bengal, Birbhum Zilla Parishad, West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL), and M.P.L.A.D. scheme for the development of the infrastructure and the campus.
