WHAT ARE SCHULICH LEADER SCHOLARSHIPS? The Canadian Schulich Leader Scholarships are undergraduate entrance scholarships for students intending to enroll in the STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS) areas of study at a minimum of one of 20 participating universities.* Developed by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich and administered by UJA Federation, this $100-million scholarship initiative is designed to ensure that future Schulich Leaders are among the next pioneers of global scientific research and innovation. Students who receive this scholarship, known as Schulich Leaders, will receive either $80,000 or $60,000 to put towards their studies in university (up to $20,000 per year). **As of January 2014, one of two awards is valued at $80,000 and is reserved for Schulich Leaders pursuing engineering degrees only** *For a complete list of participating universities, see the back page. *A sister program is conducted in Israel.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? This scholarship is open to graduating students across Canada who possess at least two of the three selection criteria: 1. 2. 3. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY, BUSINESS OR ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP FINANCIAL NEED In addition, students must be: Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada In their final year of high school/secondary school (outside of Quebec) or Cégep (in Quebec) Pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM program Becoming a Schulich Leader is a two-step process: A student must be selected 1 2 as the sole Schulich Leader Nominee for their school (Cégeps may select TWO Nominees each). A staff representative must fill out a short online application on behalf of their Nominee. Schulich Leader Nominees must then submit a separate online Schulich Leaders application that will be sent directly to the universities they have submitted official applications to. They will be sent the link to this application once they are verified as the Nominee for their school. DUE: FEBRUARY 4, 2014 DUE: FEBRUARY 24, 2014 The universities review the Schulich Leader Nominee applications and select their two Schulich Leader Scholarship recipients in between March 3 - June 15, 2014.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF BEING A SCHULICH LEADER NOMINEE? To win the appointment of Schulich Leader Nominee indicates an important distinction from one s school. Like other special award nominees, Schulich Leader Nominees will be among a select group of esteemed national scholars. Schulich Leader Nominees will be able to include the Schulich Leader Nominee designation on their resumes and curriculum vitae. Most significantly, only Schulich Leader Nominees are eligible to become Schulich Leaders and receive the scholarship. HOW CAN MY SCHOOL SUBMIT A SCHULICH LEADER NOMINEE? 1. Select your School Nominator who will submit the nominee application 2. View the nomination guidelines below 3. Display the enclosed promotional poster at your school 4. Submit your Schulich Leader Nominee application by the deadline date of February 4, 2014 THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN SELECTING YOUR SCHULICH LEADER NOMINEE: 1. All Canadian high schools and secondary schools (outside of Quebec) are eligible to select one [1] candidate each year to represent their school as a Schulich Leader Nominee. Cégeps (in Quebec) may select two [2] nominees each.

THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN SELECTING A SCHULICH LEADER NOMINEE AT YOUR SCHOOL: The candidate must be intending to enroll in a program at a minimum of one of the 20 participating Canadian universities in a STEM area of study (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) by March 1, 2014. The candidate must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and be attending a Canadian high school/secondary school (outside of Quebec) or Cégep (in Quebec). Each candidate must possess at least two of the following three attributes: 1. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 2. OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY, BUSINESS OR ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP 3. FINANCIAL NEED The process by which each school selects their Schulich Leader Nominee is entirely up to the school administration as long as the student selected meets the criteria above. 3. Once a Schulich Leader Nominee has been appointed, the School Nominator must fill out the official Schulich Leader Nominee application form at: www.schulichleaders.com/slsnominee2014 THE FORM WILL REQUEST THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: Name of the nominating high school/secondary school (outside of Quebec) or Cégep (in Quebec) and their contact information (including a School Nominator email address, telephone number and school mailing address) Name of the Schulich Leader Nominee and their email address and telephone number
Two letters of support from references (at least one academic) Reference letters must be submitted in.doc,.docx,.pdf or.txt format These documents must be titled Reference 1 and Reference 2 Permission to use the name of the Nominating School in future Schulich Leader Scholarships marketing/promotional materials 4. The deadline for each school to submit their Schulich Leader Nominee is: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2014. 5. Once your nominee has been submitted, the Schulich Leader Scholarships team at UJA Federation will verify the Schulich Leader Nominee and provide him/her with access to the online Schulich Leaders application. NOTE: This is a two-step application process. The Nominee must complete the Schulich Leaders application in order to be eligible to receive the scholarship. THE APPLICATION WILL INCLUDE THE ELEMENTS FROM THE SCHULICH LEADER NOMINEE APPLICATION AND ALSO REQUEST THE FOLLOWING: Name of the Schulich Leader Nominee and their email address, mailing address, telephone number and date of birth Check box to select the universities where they would like to be a Schulich Leader A list of their three most important achievements Most up-to-date high school/secondary school (outside of Quebec) or Cégep (in Quebec) transcript document Transcripts must be submitted in.doc,.docx,.pdf or.txt format This document must be titled Transcript
A 600 word essay expressing why they feel they would make a great Schulich Leader An optional essay to discuss any additional information including extenuating circumstances A headshot photograph Permission to use the name and photograph of the Schulich Leader Nominee in future Schulich Leader Scholarships marketing/promotional materials 6. All Schulich Leader Nominees will have access to the Schulich Leaders application beginning Friday, November 1, 2013 until Monday, February 24, 2014. In order to be eligible to compete for the scholarship, all Schulich Leader Nominees must fill out their applications within this time frame. 7. All completed online applications will be verified by the Schulich Leader Scholarships team at UJA Federation and submitted directly to those participating universities to which the Schulich Leader Nominee is choosing to apply on Monday, March 3, 2014. Each participating university will select their Schulich Leaders from this pool of applicants by mid-june 2014. 8. The Schulich Leader Nominees appointed as Schulich Leaders at each participating university will receive the sum of $60,000 CAD, (not enrolled in engineering), with the amount of $15,000 per year to be paid over a period of four (4) years [or $20,000 per year to be paid over a period of three (3) years for Cégep students completing only three years of study]. Schulich Leaders (enrolled in engineering programs) will receive $80,000 CAD, with the amount of $20,000 per year to be paid over a period of four (4) years.
