SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY ABROAD National Security Education Program David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship -- Administered by Institute for International Education (IIE) for study in critical world areas in Africa, Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, Eurasia, Latin and South America and the Middle East. (Countries not eligible: Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.) Campus representative: Richard Leitch. Deadline: February 8, 2008. This is a highly competitive scholarship and if you are interested you should talk with Richard Leitch no later than mid-january to see if you meet the criteria to make it worth your time to apply. Gilman Scholarships An award of up to $5,000 for study abroad opportunities for undergraduate students with financial need, sponsored by the US Department of State and Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Students underrepresented in study abroad are also encouraged to apply. Deadlines: April 15, 2008 for submission of the online application for fall programs; October 7, 2008 for spring 2009. The amount of each award will range from $250 to $1000, depending on the number of applicants and the resources available to the Peace Education Program. Deadline: April 7, 2008. Ruth Youngdahl Nelson Scholarship Awarded to a student who proposes a study project focusing on becoming actively involved in peace making in some experiential way. Gustavus campus representative: Richard Leitch. Deadline: April 7, 2008. Additional Scholarships Awarded to students planning independent study projects that focus on peace and justice issues or enrolled in off campus courses concerned with these issues. Lilly Lorénzen Scholarship An award of $1,500 in conjunction with the American Swedish Institute to the person best qualified who plans to study in Sweden during the coming school year. The applicant must be a Minnesota resident and have knowledge of Swedish. Applications available March 1 st and due by May 1. Current information comes out in March. Information: www.americanswedishinst.org/scholarship.htm Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program The American Swedish Institute is pleased to announce a major new education program, the Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program. An Applicant must be a U. S. resident who is enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Swedish language. Scholarships are granted for up to a full academic term. Studies which pertain to Swedish America and/or the relationship between Sweden and the United States are favored. The scholarship available is up to $10,000. Applications will be accepted Sept.1 Nov. 15 2008. Applicants must have at least two years of university or college work experience and be a citizen of a country that has a Rotary club. Deadlines vary depending on Rotary district, so contact the Rotary Club in your hometown. Deadlines may

Information: www.amscan.org DeRemee Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Awarded to a Gustavus student for study in Sweden in the coming year. Deadline: April 30. Ginger Froyen Haddorff Scholarship An award of $500 for Gustavus students with a 2.75 GPA or higher who will study abroad for a semester, summer or year. Gamelin Endowment Fund for China Studies Established by the Gamelin family to honor the experiences abroad and the interest in international relations of life-long Gustavus supporters Francis C. Gamelin ( 38) and Ruth Vickner ( 37), this endowment will enable future Gustavians to understand the growing importance of China on the world stage. Mondale Scholarship The Japan American Society of Minnesota will award scholarships up to $1,500 to Minnesota undergraduate students attending a Minnesota college or university planning to study in Japan. Japan Information Center Awarded by the Japanese government for students studying for six months to one year in Japan under the student exchange agreement. Applicants must be US citizens, enrolled as undergraduates at a US college or university, and need not have studied Japanese language. All majors are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be juniors or seniors with and interest in economics and international finance. Also includes possibilities of one-month internships with Morgan Stanley Japan s Tokyo headquarters. The applicant must be enrolled in a MN college or university and have completed at least their first year. students enrolled in or applying to international service-learning programs. FISL offers awards in the amount $500 to be used towards any aspect of the trip such as travel expenses, visas, clothing, and tuition. Deadline: November 15 and spring application deadline is TBA. Information: http://www.fisl.org/apply.php?token= IDP Student Mobility Scholarship- Available to international students wishing to undertake Australian study in 2008 in either: an overseas "Study Abroad" program or under an Australian university exchange agreement with an overseas university. Each scholarship consists of a living/travel allowance of $5,000. Scholarships can be viewed at http://www.internatioanlscholarships.info Study Abroad Programs which offer scholarships, travel grants, or financial aid American Councils for International Education (ACTR ACCELS) Undergraduates who intend to teach are eligible for full or partial scholarships through American Councils from the U. S. Department of Education (Fulbright-Hays) grant support for their participation in the Russian Language and Area Studies Program or the Eurasian Regional Language Program. Deadlines: March 1 for summer programs; April 1 for fall semester and academic year programs; October 15 for spring semester programs. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student in a UK university which is a member of BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association) for the academic year 2008/09. Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application, including documentation of current

Campus deadlines: October 1 for spring programs and March 1 for fall programs. Information: www.ciee.org/study/scholarships.aspx CIEE International Study Programs (CIEE-ISP) Scholarships These scholarships are available to CIEE Study Center applicants from Academic Consortium (AC) member institutions. Awards, applied to program fees, are usually made in amounts of $500 or $1,000 increments. Robert B. Bailey III Minority Student Scholarships Awards of $500 for students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, especially ethnic minority students. Campus Deadlines: October 1 for spring programs, March 1 for fall programs Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship Available to students applying to the Council s program in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Department of Education Scholarship for Programs in China - Available to students participating in Council Study Center Programs at Nanjing University, Peking University, East China Normal University in Shanghai, and National Chengchi University in Taipei. Grant applicants must have completed a minimum of their sophomore year to qualify. College Year in Athens Opportunities for supplemental scholarship aid. Application attached to the initial College Year in Athens application. Information: www.cyathens.org Denmark International Studies (DIS) Awarded to students who otherwise could not afford to study in Denmark. DIS scholarships cannot be used to offset any kind of financial aid at your home school. Four forms of scholarships are offered, all awarded on the basis of financial need. All programs qualify; scholarships are merit and need based. Deadline: May 1 for fall programs and November 1 for spring programs. Additional memorial awards available for students studying in Ireland, Australia and Birkbeck, University of London, along with various other designated scholarships and travel grants. The Short-Term Student Exchange Promotion Program (Inbound) Scholarship deadline is much earlier than the admission deadline. Information: www.lancs.ac.uk/users/studentsupport/funding/ School for International Training (SIT) Various worldwide scholarships and awards to students ranging from $500-$5,000 and made on consideration of both merit and need. SIT Asia Fund Award for undergraduate students interested in Asian studies, based on academic performance, curricular interest, ability to carry out independent field study and need. The Freeman Foundation funds apply to SIT semesters in China, Vietnam, or Mongolia. Information: www.http://www.sit.edu/studyabroad/scholarships/sit_freeman.html Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) Scholarships available to undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or as part of an individual student-designed study abroad semester or year. Applicants must have at least sophomore standing by the beginning of scholarship period, are expected to demonstrate interest in contemporary German and European affairs and explain the significance of their project in Germany to their future studies or goals. Students from all fields are encouraged to apply. The deadline for the 2006-2007 academic years has passed. Consult the website for the deadline for the 2007-2008 academic years. Information: www.gates.scholarships.cam.ac.uk/ Student Project for Amity among Nations (SPAN) Scholarship and loan packages to every qualified student planning a SPAN abroad experience, along with scholarships designated for students traveling to particular countries or regions. Information: umabroad.umn.edu/financial/index.html Nobel Museum Summer Program A two-week program in Sweden for science majors. Applicants must know some Swedish. Airfare and most expenses are paid. Petters Foundation works to help advance the educational experience of deserving students by providing college scholarships. The Foundation scholarships support U.S. students who wish to study international business study abroad. Focus is on students with financial need but look for motivated students with good character. Up to $5000 scholarship for year, semester, or summer programs. Deadlines: December 15 for summer, fall semester, and academic year programs beginning May 16-Oct. 16; June 15 for summer, spring semester and academic year programs beginning December 15-May 15. Information: www.johntpettersfoundation.org Study & Internship Program (SIP)- This is a unique opportunity for students to accelerate their personal and intellectual growth and to add invaluable academic and professional credentials to their resume. The program consists of: A full academic semester of study abroad at on of the UAS7 universities in Germany & A one-semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany. All applicants selected for the program will receive a monthly scholarship for the duration of the study semester, and a stipend for the duration of the internship semester. Deadline: April 1 for fall semester and academic year and October 1 for spring semester. Each scholarship consists of a living/travel allowance of $25,000 per year

up to a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory progress. All applicants must be nominated by their university and either be a graduating senior or have completed their bachelor s degree with in the past academic year.
