STAFF EDUCATION AND TRAINING MANAGER POSITION DESCRIPTION General Statement of Duties The Staff Education and Training (SETD) Manager is responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of the Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC) Nurse and Dialysis Technician (DT) training and education programs. This individual educates and trains new patient care employees on the PSKC mission statement, employment policies, patient care policies and practices, patient education programs, and approved dialysis techniques. This individual also prepares and presents in-service educational opportunities to PSKC dialysis professionals. Education Bachelor s Degree in Nursing (BSN). Licensure & Certification QUALIFICATIONS Current Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Washington State Board of Nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers CPR card. Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN), Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) or Certified Peritoneal Dialysis Nurse (CPDN) Nephrology Nursing is preferred. Experience A minimum of five years experience in clinical nursing required. Knowledge and prior experience with the development and responsibility for an organized education program preferred. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Prior experience in dialysis preferred. Skills & Abilities Operate a computer. Work with staff and patients in a caring, tactful, and diplomatic manner. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Staff Training Oversee orientation of new patient care staff. Responsible for the training of all new nurses and patient care technicians hired at PSKC using a multi-disciplinary approach. Didactic training for orientation: o Present and test on hemodialysis modules required by PSKC o Instruct appropriate classes for new Biomedical technicians Certify personnel who have completed the PSKC Patient Care Training and Orientation Course as competent to work independently as dialysis trained staff nurses or DTs. Assess and evaluate all new clinical staff at 3, 6, 12, and 24 month intervals. Develop and maintain an on-going in-service program for nurses and DTs. Develop a program to prepare RNs and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) for Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) and Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN) exam. Develop a program to prepare all PCTs for Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) exam. Develop and maintain a method of providing contact hour opportunities for all staff on an on-going basis. Report to the Director, Nursing Services (DNS) of PSKC on the educational accomplishments and needs of PSKC patient care personnel. This individual will be a standing member of the Policy & Procedure Committee, the Quality of Care Committee, the Patient Education Committee and the Department Head team. Participate in selected Process Improvement Teams (PIT) along with being an ad hoc member of the Environment of Care (EOC) Committee. Develop and maintain the RN and DT Clinical Instructor and Clinical Preceptor programs. Review online educational content yearly or more often as needed to ensure compliance In-service/meeting/continuing education coordination: o Assist presenters o Secure contact hours for continuing education when appropriate o Annual Blood Borne Pathogen presentation for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) o Back-up presenter for other mandatory in-service training o Assure makeup offerings for mandatory in-service trainings are provided Page 2 of 5

Develop and maintain a process for all required staff to be trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Coordination of new staff testing for Tuberculosis (TB), blood draws for hepatitis B. Ensure renewal of Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) and Approver of Continuing Nursing Education (A-CNE) Provider status. Serve as a clinical resource by staying updated on literature/regulations/best practice processes within the industry. Serve as a link between PSKC policies/procedures and clinical practice. Draft new policies and procedures as needed. Maintain working relationships with community and nephrology resources. Administrative Duties Ensure that all administrative duties to support training programs are completed with assistance. Manage the data entry and tracking of: o Staff in-service attendance records o Staff blood draw and TB results Assembly of orientation/training manuals. Monitor and maintain education website content and track employee participation. In-service/continuing education coordination: o Assemble committee to select topics o Locate presenters o Assemble and distribute calendar of events o Distribute flyers announcing events Coordinate requests/eligibility for outside educational opportunities for staff, including registration, counseling staff on travel, lodging, and reimbursable expenses, and submitting paperwork for staff reimbursement of expenses. OTHER FUNCTIONS As necessary, communicate directly with the President & CEO and/or his/her designee regarding nursing and technician training requirements, and PSKC policy and procedure related issues. Attend all mandatory organizational programs and maintain documentation for all unit specific certification requirements. Participate in unit/organization performance improvement activities to ensure the development and implementation of processes, which supports continuous quality improvement and effective work performance. Physical Demands REQUIREMENTS Required to stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time. Lifting, positioning, or physically moving patients. Frequently reaching, bending, kneeling, or stooping, and other range of motion activities Lifting 30-50 lb. containers or boxes. Operate a computer up to four hours at a time. Visual acuity to discern changes in patient s skin and/or blood color, differentiate between colors of medication and/or solutions, interpret typed or handwritten documentation, and identify labels appropriately. Hearing acuity, within correctable to normal range, to communicate effectively with others, and to hear equipment alarms. Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate medical records, equipment, and perform other essential job functions. Periodically required to work long, continuous hours. Mental Demands Occasional stress from dealing with ill people. Ability to prioritize when confronted with conflicting work tasks/schedules. Occasional stress due to medical emergency situations and organizational needs. Perform calculations and be able to teach basic algebra. Apply educational and practical experience to perform accurate and complete assessments. Other Requirements When needed, visit any PSKC facility, or hospitals with whom we contract for acute services. Successfully complete mandatory in-service trainings. Maintain professional relationships and boundaries with patients and staff. Dedication to professionalism, maturity, caring, and diplomacy. Comply with all PSKC and departmental policies and procedures. Knowledgeable in the operation of all clinical equipment and supplies used in caring for the dialysis patient. Maintain confidentiality of patient, employee, hospital, or PSKC information at all times. Uphold and teach the Standard of Professional Nursing Practice. Continue to improve professional competence through reading and understanding related literature and attending relevant trainings and conferences. Maintain a personal education profile. Maintain PSKC staff education records in compliance with OSHA, WISHA, and the Washington State Nursing Association. EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE USED Dialysis machines. Various equipment and supplies related to the dialysis process. Computer and computer-related equipment. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software. Telephone, facsimile and copy machines. WORK ENVIRONMENT Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne, respiratory, and airborne diseases. Exposure to industrial and pharmacological hazards as defined in Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances, including unpredictable situations. PSKC is typically quiet with occasional periods of heightened traffic through the work area, increased noise level, and interruptions. Staff Education Training Nurse NOTICE REQUIREMENTS To resign this position in good standing, the employee must give 30 days notice, in writing, to their supervisor and Human Resources. Employees who have successfully completed their orientation period and provided this advance notice of resignation will receive the value of any accrued Personal Time-Off (PTO).
