COLOGNE, GERMANY Its metropolitan vibe, diverse student scene and a cityscape abound with cultural and historical treasures make Cologne one of Europe s prime university cities. Cologne s origins date back to the heyday of the Roman Empire more than 2,000 years ago. The former settlement of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium soon flourished into a major trading hub. Today, Cologne is Germany s fourth largest city with a population of slightly more than one million and has evolved as a main economic and cultural center at the heart of Europe. Every Cologne resident has more than their fair share of zest for life and partying spirit it s in their DNA. After all, Cologne is more than just a city it is a matter of the heart, an emotion and an unfalteringly positive state of mind. At the root of this outlook are carnival, kölsch beer and, of course, Cologne Cathedral. Cologne s economy is characterized by its amalgamation of different industries and trades. Home to the country s most influential television and radio stations, Cologne is unquestionably Germany s media capital and plays host to some of the continent s biggest trade fairs. Quite a few of the world s most renowned enterprises call the metropolitan region their home, in particular corporations operating in the automobile industry, biotechnology and life sciences, chemicals and pharmaceuticals as well as commerce and banking. GERMAN SPORT UNIVERSITY COLOGNE Deutsche Sporthochshule Köln The German Sport University Cologne is no ordinary university. It is the only university in Germany that is dedicated exclusively to the world of sport and exercise science. While sport and exercise science courses are available alongside many other subjects at other universities, the situation in Cologne is unique: all aspects of the exciting field of sport and exercise science are studied in detail at 21 institutes, four affiliate institutes and nine academic centres. This expertise concentrated in one location allows for a unique interdisciplinary approach and provides the opportunity to examine complex social topics from various perspectives of sport and exercise science. Located at the Müngersdorf Sport Park, in the heart of Cologne s green belt and within an almost perfect sport infrastructure, Europe s largest sport university offers an unique environment for more than 6.000 students from 72 countries. 60 university partnerships are a sign of its international focus. As an university aligned with European ideas and state-of-the-art graduate and postgraduate degree programmes, it has constantly encouraged and influenced sport and exercise science. 5 Dshs-koeln.de Guide for International Students University Videos
