Registration for the PSAT/NMSQT will begin Monday September 26th. The PSAT is used to determine National Merit Scholars. Only 11 th grade test scores will be used for National Merit identification. 10 th graders can take the test for practice. The PSAT will be held at Roosevelt High School in the small gym Wednesday, October 19th 2016 beginning at 8:00 a.m. The cost of the assessment is $20.00. If students would like to register, please sign up by taking the payment to the bookkeeper (Mrs. Kuehler) in the main office. If you have any questions, please contact the counseling office at 242-7281. Parking Restrictions!! Due to special City of Des Moines parking permits, parking on the east & west sides of Polk Blvd and between Chamberlain and Blvd Place will be closed to cars on October 3, 4, 11, and 12. Parking laws will be strictly enforced by Des Moines Police Department. Please be aware of the restricted parking on those days and CAR POOL, or allow EXTRA TIME to park extended distances. Thanks in advance for your cooperation! National Honor Society will be holding its induction ceremony in the Roosevelt auditorium on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 7pm.Invited participants should gather in the cafeteria by 6:30 p.m. in business casual attire (no jeans). A reception will be held in the library following the ceremony. Students who are to be inducted at this year s ceremony will have been notified. Inductees are encouraged to invite family to attend this event! Please rsvp the number attending to Mrs. Dunbar at leslie.dunbar@dmschools.org. School Yearbook Pictures/Picture Retake Day for ALL GRADE LEVELS will be taken on Wednesday, October 5, 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the commons for those that did not have their picture taken during summer registration. All students must have their pictures taken, INCLUDING SENIORS. Please mark your calendar to be sure to be included in school pictures! These pictures will be used in the yearbook and in Infinite Campus as a school record. Order envelopes may be picked up in the main office and return completed to the photographer on picture day! Brother2Brother will be meeting every other Wednesday in the cafeteria from 9:55-10:40 a.m. All members are required to attend these meetings. If you wish to become a part of this group, please contact Mr. Lewis (Room 1290) for more information. The next meeting will be September 28. Upward Bound Tutoring will begin on Thursday, September 29th in room 1070 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. See Mr. Williamson in the counseling office if you have any questions. PINK OUT! Senior Night Friday, October 7 The varsity football game is a PINK OUT! Show your support for breast cancer awareness and dress in your best pink attire! The band will collect donations from the crowd. Proceeds will go directly to The Susan Komen Foundation. PINK OUT! Roosevelt PINK R shirts (pink, long-sleeved, lightweight thermal waffle weave, $15) are for sale in the Rider Shoppe on Wednesdays and Thursdays and at the football game on Friday. If you are interested, find one of your fellow GSA members who will be wearing RED on Wednesday. They wear red to show their gratitude to their allies and invite you to join GSA to show support and help advocate for the LGBTQ+ community at Roosevelt High School. Please feel free to wear

RED on Wednesday as well to show your support! Please join us at GSA Meetings: Mondays, 2:45-3:30 p.m. in room 2820. Parking Violations Will Be Distributed! South parking lots are reserved for senior and junior parking by ($20) permit only. Students must have their vehicles registered with a parking tag or risk parking tickets/towing. All other parking is available on the surrounding streets per city posted signage. ALL PEOPLE PARKING ILLEGALLY will be subject to parking tickets from city officials. Carpooling, city transportation (DART), bicycling or walking are highly encouraged! Basketball Cheer Tryout Informational Meeting will be held on October 5th at 12:30 pm in the library. Roosevelt American Sign Language Club meets EVERY Thursday in Room 1320. Anyone can attend! Interact/Rotary Come and join the Interact/Rotary Club if you are interested in getting Silver Cord service hours. Come and join if you want to make a difference in your community through volunteering. We will meet every other Monday at 2:45 in the cafeteria. Next meeting will be on October 3. Silver Cord All grades are required to complete volunteer service hours to earn this very prestigious award at graduation! The forms are available on the Roosevelt website in the Student section under Silver Cord. Please see Mrs. Lupe Thomason in 2170 or the Counseling Office for further details. R Club is continuing its tradition of philanthropy and school spirit! We are reaching out to anyone who wants to be involved. We meet in Ms. Walker's room, 2870, after school every Thursday at 2:45 p.m. This is a great opportunity to improve leadership skills and meet with people who love Roosevelt. Anyone is welcome! Last Day to Make Schedule Changes Please see your grade level counselor in the Counseling office for any changes. The last day to DROP without an "F" is 10/4/16 (A Day courses) and 10/5/16 (B Day courses). Save the Date! WE WANT YOU TO GIVE BLOOD! The Roosevelt chapter of the National Honor Society is sponsoring a fall blood drive to be held in the Roosevelt library on October 31st. You may sign up for the blood drive in several locations: At a National Honor Society booth that will be located by the cafeteria during lunchtime starting the second week of October In Mrs. Dunbar's room, 2260 Or sign up with a roaming NHS member (they ll be wearing blood buttons to help them stand out) starting in October. If you just want general information regarding the blood drive or need a parent consent form, you could see the president of NHS at Roosevelt, Charlotte Hilker, Mrs. Dunbar in room 2260, or Mrs. Adcock in the main office. The Library will be closed on Monday October 31, 2016. Flu Shot Clinic Roosevelt will host a flu shot clinic during our conference night on Monday, October 10 th from 3:30-7:30 pm. Most major insurance plans accepted; please bring your insurance card. For those who are uninsured, the cost is $20, but no one will be turned away for inability to pay. FluMist (nasal spray vaccine) will not be available this year because it has been found to be ineffective. If you are interested in a flu shot, but not able to attend this clinic, other dates/locations are available. MANDATORY Senior Class Assembly will be held October 5 in the auditorium! Seniors will be measured for cap and gown, senior calendars with deadlines, senior social dues (senior banquet/prom) and senior packets with cap/gown information will be distributed, all seniors must attend! A CC/CA bus will be provided following the meeting. Save the Date! Senior Parent Herff Jones Night will be October 11 at 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the library. Save the Date! Senior Student Herff Jones Order Day will be Wednesday, October 12 in the commons from 7:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Save the Date! Senior class picture will be 11-09-16 at 9:50 am in the big gym. Date for Senior Yearbook Pictures Deadline to submit senior pictures for the 2016-2017 yearbook is Thursday, December 22, 2016. Photos must be vertical. Other people or props are not allowed in the picture. We prefer to have images sent electronically. Your photographer may send your photo via e-mail in High Res PDF format (wallet size) or JPG at 180 PPT or higher to leslie.dunbar@dmschools.org.
