OHSAA FOOTBALL Weekly Release - October 25, 2017 Ohio High School Athletic Association 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus, OH 43214 Office 614-267-2502 Fax 614-267-1677 www.ohsaa.org @OHSAASports Facebook.com/OHSAA Contact: Tim Stried, Director of Information Services, tstried@ohsaa.org Welcome to Week 10 of the Regular-Season The final week of the 2017 OHSAA football regular season has arrived. On Tuesday (Oct. 24), the OHSAA released the updated computer ratings through Week Nine. The regular season ends this Saturday night (Oct. 28) and the final computer ratings will be posted late that night. Schools have until 10 AM Sunday (Oct. 29) to report any possible mistakes in the ratings. Unless there is a discrepancy, the ratings become official at noon. Pairings and Weekly Notes Packets Released Sundays by 4 p.m. The OHSAA s weekly playoff football notes packet, which includes the playoff pairings, will be posted each Sunday by 4 p.m. Regional playoff brackets, which include the contact information for media coordinators at each site, will be posted online by 3 p.m. Monday. All Playoff Games on Friday Nights in 2017 New this year, all football playoff games during the first four rounds of the playoffs will be on Friday nights, unless the host facility does not have lights or there are other circumstances that require a game to be moved to Saturday afternoon. The OHSAA made the change due to declining attendance for Saturday playoff games and more playoff sites being available on Fridays compared to Saturdays, when college football night games often cause sites to have a shortage of workers. In the Beginning to Seven Divisions When the OHSAA created the football playoffs in 1972, there were three divisions (called Class A, AA and AAA) and only one playoff qualifier per region (12 total playoff qualifiers). Now in its 46th year, the postseason has expanded to seven divisions and 224 total playoff qualifiers. Expansion occurred in 1980 to five divisions and two qualifiers per region, and then again in 1985 to four qualifiers per region. In 1994, a sixth division was added, while in 1999, the number of qualifiers per region increased to eight. The playoffs expanded to seven divisions in 2013. OHSAA Football by the Numbers 719 High schools in Ohio that played football in 2016 7 Divisions for the playoffs 72 Schools in Division I 108 Average number of schools in Division II through VII 32 Playoff qualifiers per division 4 Playoff qualifiers per region 224 Total playoff qualifiers 31.2 Percentage of football playing schools that qualify All-session ticket books for the state championship games will go on sale soon. A ticket option that has indoor access in the stadium club will be available. Parking passes are not sold. Access to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is included with some ticket packages. State Championships Schedule The state championship games return to Canton this year and the new Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. One division will be selected to play its state championship game on Thursday, Nov. 30 (7:30 p.m. kickoff). Then there will be three state championship games on Friday, Dec. 1, followed by three more championship games on Saturday, Dec. 2. Game times on Friday and Saturday are 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. The divisional assignments will be announced after the state semifinal games. About the Regionals and State Semifinals The regional playoffs follow bracket format, beginning with the regional quarterfinals. Regional Quarterfinals (Nov. 3): During the first round, the higher seed will host the playoff game at its home stadium or the stadium of its choosing. The No. 8 seed will play at the No. 1 seed, the No. 7 seed at No. 2, etc. Regional Semifinals (Nov. 10), Regional Finals (Nov. 17) and State Semifinals (Nov. 24): Neutral sites are selected by the OHSAA. There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and distance from field, press box size, parking spaces available, and a separate locker room for officials. After all Media Information Credentials for Playoff Games For the first four rounds of the playoffs, media must contact the host site s media coordinator by 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Contact information for the media coordinator for each game will be posted within the brackets at OHSAA.org. Media coordinators will work with the athletic director at the schools and follow the OHSAA s press box priority seating scale. Playoff Games On TV Spectrum will make its playoff game selections by noon on Mondays. Spectrum has exclusivity of the games it selects. Other games are available for tape-delay telecasts, which can be shown beginning at 11:30 PM the same day of the game. Ticket Information Fans are encouraged to buy their playoff tickets in advance at the participating schools, which keep a percentage of the revenue. For regional playoff games, tickets are $8 presale and $9 at the gate. Twitter.com/OHSAASports Facebook.com/OHSAA

those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. Championship Games Return to Canton After hosting the OHSAA state championship games in Columbus throughout the 1980s, natural grass was installed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus in the spring of 1990 and OSU asked the OHSAA to move its football state championship games to another location. The OHSAA found a home in Stark County, with Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium sharing the state championship games for 24 years until 2014 when the finals returned to the Shoe. On the Verge of History Entering the 2017 season, 62 OHSAA member schools have never made the football playoffs. Eight schools made the playoffs for the first time last year, including Hilliard Bradley (Div. I), Columbus West (Div. II), Akron East (Div. III), Bellefontaine Ben Logan (Div. IV), Cincinnati Aiken (Div. V), Lakeside Danbury (Div. VII), McGuffey Upper Scioto Valley (Div. VII) and CIncinnati Hillcrest Academy (Div. VII). The number of first-time playoff participants since 2000 includes eight in 2016, eight in 2015, 10 in 2014, two in 2013, seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in 2000. Speaking of Making History... While the aforementioned eight schools were in the playoffs for the first time last year, Newark Catholic made the playoffs for a state record 35th time. MOST OHSAA PLAYOFF APPEARANCES ENTERING 2017 REGU- LAR-SEASON: 1. Newark Catholic, 35 tie-2. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, 33 tie-2. Ironton, 33 4. Mogadore, 30 5. Week 10 Movers Many schools will need to win their final regular-season game this weekend in order to clinch a playoff berth. The OHSAA football weekly release on Oct. 29 will include the list of schools that were outside the playoff field after Week 9 and moved up into the playoff field thanks to victories in Week 10. First Round Success Two schools have an amazing success rate in the first round of the playoffs. St. Henry has been in the playoffs 15 times and is 15-0 in first-round playoff games. Cincinnati Colerain is 18-0, although one of its first-round games (1995) was later forfeited. In addition, three schools won their first-round playoff game nine straight years before losing, including Germantown Valley View, Mogadore and Newark Licking Valley. schools that are back in the playoffs after a long absence. In 2016, the longest return trip was by Barberton, which hadn t been in the playoffs since 1998. In 2015, Burton Berkshire was back in the playoffs for the first time since 1981. In 2013, Norwalk was back in the playoffs for the first time since winning the state championship in 1974. First-Round Playoff Results by Seed Last year in the first round of the playoffs, the higher seeds (home teams) went 80-32. Five No. 8 seeds won at No. 1 seeds, including Avon Lake in Div. Ironton, 11 Historians have found that in most years since 1895, the media or a specific organization named an Ohio high school football state champion. The Associated Press began its polls in 1947 and the OHSAA created the playoffs in 1972. The research of mythical state champions dating back to 1895 has been compiled on the football page at OHSAA.org. MAC Builds on Success (By Gary Rasberry, Celina Daily Standard) The Midwest Athletic Conference started in 1973, but it wasn t until 1989 that the conference began its run of football dominance of the smaller divisions. From 1989, when Minster won the conference s first state title, to 2015 when Fort Recovery won its first-ever state title and Coldwater captured its sixth since 2005, the MAC has been regular visitors to the state championships game. In that span, the MAC has been missing from State Championship Weekend only three years (1991, 1993 and 2002). In 2003, Versailles, a five-time state champion before joining in the MAC in 2000, won its first MAC state football title, starting a streak where the MAC has brought home at least one title from either Stark County (Massillon or Canton) or Ohio Stadium every season except the 2009 season. In 2005, the MAC had its first double-championship weekend as Coldwater won the Division IV title in Canton and Delphos St. John s won the Division VI state title a few hours later in Massillon. The MAC had two champions in 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2013. In 2014, the MAC made state history in becoming the first conference to win three state football championship titles in the same season Coldwater, Minster and Marion Local swept Divisions V, VI and VII. Since the OHSAA created the seventh division, the MAC has won every state championship in the smallest-school division except 2016 when Warren John F. Kennedy topped Minster. Marion Local won the first two back-to-back in 2013 and 2014 with Fort Recovery winning last season. Minster is back representing the MAC in the Div. VII title game this weekend. The MAC is 65-2 in first round playoff games against non-mac schools since the playoffs expanded to eight qualifiers per region in 1999. (The two losses include a Versailles loss to Lima Central Catholic in 2005 and a Delphos St. John s loss to Arlington in 2014.) The MAC is 51-13 against non-mac schools in OHSAA regional championship games. The MAC is now 36-7 in state semifinal games against non-mac schools. The MAC currently owns 115 various OHSAA state team championships. Proving the Pollsters During the playoffs, the weekly release will contain a breakdown of how the state s top-ranked teams according to the Associated Press media poll have fared in the postseason. Last year, all 70 teams ranked in the AP Top 10 made the playoffs. Before the Playoffs

Skyview Networks to Provide Satellite Distribution of OHSAA Radio Network Football Championship Broadcasts Satellite provider for Ohio s pro teams to distribute OHSAA football finals from Canton Nov. 30, Dec. 1-2 COLUMBUS, Ohio Skyview Networks, the radio broadcast satellite provider for Ohio s professional sports teams including the Cavs, Blue Jackets, Reds, Indians, Bengals and Browns, will once again distribute the OHSAA Radio Network broad-casts of the 2017 football state championship games. The football championship broadcasts, which had 46 affiliates last year, return to Canton Nov. 30, Dec. 1 & 2. Skyview Networks is pleased to partner with the OHSAA Radio Network to deliver state championship broadcasts to its affiliates, said Matt Stys, Vice President of Business Development for Skyview Networks. The football state championships in Ohio are a prestigious event and we are proud to add that to our client base, which includes hun-dreds of college and professional teams, many of which are in Ohio. The OHSAA Radio Network continues to grow every year and we look forward to being a part of that growth and service. Specializing in news and sports programming, Skyview Networks was formed in 1995 to provide broadcast services in the form of distribution, automation, and inventory management, as well as content for the radio industry. Com-bining cutting-edge technology, extensive resources and unmatched industry expertise, Skyview Networks is the partner of choice for advertisers, radio stations and sports organizations throughout North America. Skyview Networks is already the satellite provider of the aforementioned professional teams in Ohio along with ABC News Radio and ABC Sports Radio, meaning that most stations in Ohio already have Skyview Networks receivers and can automate the broadcasts. The OHSAA Radio Network, which has been carried by 76 stations across Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, was created in 2010 to provide exceptional radio broadcasts of selected OHSAA state tournaments and partner with local affiliates to carry those broadcasts, along with public service announcements and promotional messages. Stations that carry broadcasts receive discounts or waivers for the rights fees they would normally pay to broadcast OHSAA regional and state tournaments. Playoff Preview Show The OHSAA Radio Network will produce and distribute a football playoff preview show on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The 55 minute show will include two local breaks and will go around the state to preview each division. A link to the show will be emailed to stations for download. Playoff Games on TV Spectrum is the official television partner of the OHSAA and will televise several playoff games every weekend. Spectrum will announce its playoff selections by noon on Mondays. Spectrum s coverage of those games is exclusive and some games will be shown live. Spectrum will televise the state championship games live Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2. During the playoffs, other telecasts can begin Saturday morning. Championships on the OHSAA Radio Network Now in its eighth year, the OHSAA Radio Network will broadcast the football state championship games. Stations that commit to carry at least two state championship game broadcasts from the network will have their rights fees waived throughout the playoffs. The championship games will be available from Skyview Satellite and online. Please contact Tim Stried for details. Playoff Preview Show Coming November 1 The OHSAA Radio Network will distribute a 55-minute playoff preview show on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
