Definition of a Hospital Hygiene Committee Is multidisciplinary committee appointed by the Hospital Managing Director, which aims mainly at promoting hospital hygiene for prevention of nosocomial infections with the following outcomes: 6

Improved hospital cleanliness; Reduction of flies and cockroaches population; Installation and use of handwashing facilities; Hygienic toilets for patients and staff; Proper drainage and disposal of sewage; Proper drainage of storm water; Use of safe water and food in the hospital; Use of mosquito nets by patients; 7

Improved post exposure care; Reduced administration of unnecessary injections; Reduced invasive medical procedures; Standardized and maintenance of medical equipment; Efficient management of healthcare wastes. Reduction of nosocomial infections; Demonstrations of nutrition gardens 8

Responsibilities of Hospital Hygiene Committee: Organizing and coordinating activities for prevention of nozocomial infections; Training and refreshing the hospital staff on hospital hygiene; Organizing health and hygiene education for hospital visitors and patients ; Ensuring the availability of adequate health and hygiene documents and tools (protocols, guides, posters ) Ensuring availability of water treatment agents and disinfectants; Ensuring injection safety and management of healthcare wastes; 9

Ensuring aseptic methods in surgery rooms and other healthcare units; Recording of the hospital infections; Bacteriological surveillance in the hospital and in critical zones particularly in surgery rooms, intensive care units etc.); Ensuring food safety in the hospital; Fighting against vermins; 10

Providing technical advices for all buildings projects; Establishing partnerships between hospital departments in the promotion of hygiene; Ensuring staff are involved in demonstrating nutrition gardens and hygienic practices; Monitoring and evaluation of hygiene activities; Draw up monthly report. 11
