GRCC Grants and Resource Development Department Annual Report Fiscal Year 2017 Mission Statement The Grants and Resource Development Department furthers the strategic initiatives of Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC ) by providing institutional leadership and support for departments and teams engaging in grant development efforts. Grants and Resource Development Department Staff Judith Larsen, Director Lisa Dopke, Associate Director Executive Summary The Grants and Resource Development Department was exceedingly successful in FY 2017. Between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 3017, the department obtained 18 awards totaling $8,160,859 in competitive grant funding. This was more than double the amount of grant funding received during the previous fiscal year. This brings the total amount raised by the Grants Department since 2006 to well over $72.7 million. Two grants were awarded through collaborations with partner organizations. These awards comprised $441,300, or 5%, of the total amount awarded for FY 2017.
Trends: GRCC s Grant Portfolio The Grants Department has obtained 86 grant awards over the past four years. As shown in the chart below, the majority of these grants (75%) were first-time awards for new projects or programs. New awards totaled more than $20 million during this period and included projects such as the Michigan Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing grant (U.S. Department of Labor), the Preschool Construction Project (W.K. Kellogg Foundation and others), and a grant for Chemistry Instrumentation Summer Camps (Perrigo Foundation). Grant funds are awarded annually for SSS, but the program must be renewed through a highly competitive application process every five years. Competitive renewal grants are made through an annual application process, and although they comprise the smallest portion of GRCC s grant portfolio (10%), the awards have totaled more than $2.6 million in the last four years. These grants totaling over $4 million largely supported important, longstanding programming for a variety of diverse learner groups. These programs have evolved with each competitive iteration, with research bringing to light new ways of delivering services, program priorities changing over time, and the expansion of the programs to meet the ever-changing needs of those served. A primary example of a continuation award is GRCC s not uncommon for funder priorities to shift over time or new data supporting the need for the projects to emerge. Programming in this category of awards has included grants for older learner programming (Area Agency on Aging of W. Michigan), English as a second language (ESL) for adult learners (Michigan Department of Adult Education), and the Motorcycle Rider Safety Training Program (Michigan Department of State). Grant funding promotes the strategic ends of GRCC to provide pathways leading to student success, workforce training, and transfer options. FY 2017 grant awards are aligned with each of these pathways as shown in the chart below. 2017 Fiscal Year Pathway Alignment 55% 4% 42% Student Success Pathways Workforce Pathways Transfer Pathways Student Success Pathways The Campus Suicide Prevention Grant (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services) helps build capacity and infrastructure that supports efforts to promote wellness and help-seeking behaviors among all students, to outreach to vulnerable students, and to address behavioral health disparities. The Child Care Access Means Parents in School Program (U.S. Department of Education) provides child care for low-income student parents to attend class, thus increasing persistence and completion. Transfer Pathways The TRIO Student Support Services Program (U.S. Department of Education) provides support services to increase lowincome, first generation students retention, and graduation or transfer rates. The MiCUP grant (Michigan Strategic Fund) is a partnership with Michigan Technological University that provides potential transfer students with a four-year university research experience. Workforce Pathways The America s Promise grant (U.S. Department of Labor) supports expansion of regional partnerships for the purpose of building a pipeline of skilled workers to address knowledge and skills shortages in the health care industry sector. The Expanding Health Care Pathways for Minorities initiative (JPMorgan Chase Foundation) increases opportunities for minority community members to enter health care jobs and advance from entry-level positions to middle- and high-skill health care careers.
GRCC s Internal Grant Programs In FY 2017, the GRCC Foundation allocated $60,000 for professional development to support the participation of faculty and staff in a variety of learning opportunities. Professional development grants are administered by the Grants and Resource Development Department through the Instructional Improvement & Professional Development (IIPD) and Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) programs. Grant recipients and their respective activities are listed below. Instructional Improvement & Professional Development (IIPD) Grants The purpose of the IIPD Grant program is to support faculty professional development to ensure continued growth, develop new avenues of instruction and curriculum, and to enhance the professional lives of faculty for increased student learning, achievement and success.
