June 2009 The HAV E R S A C K The News-Letter Of the SGT Lawrence Everhart Chapter Of the Maryland Society Of the Sons of the American Revolution CHAPTER TO DEDICATE GRAVE of PETER MANTZ Our Patriot, Peter Mantz, quickly came forth when the troubles with England began, and was the Captain of the 1st Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp, reporting to the area of New Jersey to support Washington s defense of New York in July 1776. He became a temporary Major from September to December as the British overwhelmed the American forces in and around New York, helping to cover the retreat of Washington s Army as it raced across New Jersey to the Delaware River. Peter was born in Pennsylvania on 8 November 1752, in his early youth came with his family to Frederick County, where on 29 November 1775 he was elected Captain of Militia in the 1st Battalion. Peter Mantz continued to serve in the military as well as civil offices during the entire period of the Revolutionary War. He was an Associator by December 1775, a Quartermaster of the 33 rd Battalion beginning on 2 March 1776, and a Captain thereof on 26 March 1776. Peter married Catherine Hauer on 28 Apr 1778. He also served in the House of Delegates in 1782. Peter Mantz died in Frederick County on 16 January 1833. The dedication is at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 28, 2009. The gravesite is in the east side of section E, nearest Stadium Drive. You can park along the sides of the road near the grave. CHAPTER HOLD SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING The chapter held its semi-annual meeting at Dutch s Daughter Restaurant on April 16. A copy of the minutes follows: After a cash bar reception at 11:30, president Favorite called the meeting to order at 12 noon. The pledge to the flag and the SAR pledge were followed by the invocation by compatriot John George. After a fine lunch was served, the President introduced all the guests including DAR regents and DAR members and 1st Vice President of the MDSSAR, compatriot Ed Foreman Jr. 1

It was confirmed that a quorum was present by the secretary. The minutes were waived by vote as they had been published in the current issue of the Haversack newsletter. Dr. John George, chairman of the SAR Knight Essay competition introduced this year s winner, Nick Thomas, a senior at Tuscarora High School. Nick read his winning essay on John Jay. It was also noted that Nick s essay ranked third in the state and he will be entered in the national contest. The reports from the President, Secretary and Treasurer were all read and approved by vote. Current chapter accounts available total $4,503.81. Reports were given from committee chairman as follows: Paul Offutt, co-chair of the new PR committee explained how this committee would strive to publicize before and after chapter activities in the local press. Bruce Champion identified the two winners of the SAR ROTC awards as Peter B. Manciti from Mt. St. Mary s University and David P.Gudeman from Hood College. Their awards and medals will be given to them at the McDaniel College award assembly on April 17th. David Schrodel introduced and presented the Jr. ROTC Medal and certificate to the winner of the Jr. ROTC competition to Ms. Jennifer Munley, a junior at Linganore High School. Ms. Munley gave a short talk about the JROTC program and her plans for the future. Ai Smith, Flag Awards chairman, presented certificates to individual homeowner winner Greg and Terry Wills and business owners, Airport View Signs and Endless Summer RV s President Favorite identified the new member initiative and outlined the significance of the SAR emblem and what it stands for. Asst. Secretary Rick Stup explained the New Member Initiative program that he initiated and its purpose to help new members identify with the various committees and activities of the chapter. It is hoped that this initiative will gain greater participation from the old and new members once they are more familiar with our aims and goals. President Favorite introduced the five new members to the chapter: Paul Joseph Offutt, Monroe Francis Grossnickle, Andrew Lloyd Bass, Ryan Christopher Bass and George Elder Lewis Jr. The new members were presented with SAR lapel rosettes and member certificates; sworn in and introduced to the chapter as new members. MDSSAR VP Compatriot Ed Foreman presented War Service Medals to Ai Smith and Bruce Champion. President Favorite presented special medals and certificates to the following members of the SAR and DAR. To Elizabeth Bass of the DAR, the SAR Medal of Appreciation and Certificate To Compatriot Ai Smith, the SAR Meritorious Service Medal and Certificate To Compatriot John George, the SAR Meritorious Service Medal and Certificate To Compatriot Mark Hoke, the SAR Silver Good Citizenship Medal and Certificate. 2

To Compatriot Rick Stup, the SAR Certificate of Appreciation for his tireless effort developing the New Member Initiative. Under new business President Favorite identified our summer gravesite dedication at Mt. Olivet Cemetery of Major Peter Mantz on Sunday, June 28th at 3:M. The public is invited to participate in this event. President Favorite also asked for a vote on the amended By-Laws. The vote was taken and passed. Reciting the SAR Recessional concluded the event and President Favorite gave the Benediction. The event was adjourned at approximately 2:15 PM Respectfully Submitted, Bruce D. Champion, Secretary OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP AWARDS For many years (originally in 1928), the Chapter has presented an Outstanding Citizenship Certificate and Lapel Pin to a graduating senior from each high school in Frederick County. Ai Smith has coordinated the program for many years and does an outstanding job. The Committee is currently assisting a number of prospective members. Any Chapter Member with a prospect or any prospects are requested to contact Larry Bishop, Committee Chair. The prospect will be assigned a Committee Member to assist them with questions and the process. The Committee is working towards maintaining the Chapter Web Page on the MDSSAR Web Site and releasing information about the Chapter. The Committee wishes to thank W. Jerome Offutt and William Robertson for volunteering to work on the Public Relations Committee. Jerry Offutt, a long standing member of the Chapter, volunteered for the Committee at the last Chapter Meeting, and will be assisting with Event/Activity Coordination for PR Releases. Bill contacted the Committee with interest in assisting with the Web Page. He will be working on the Web Site Sub-Committee. Lawrence Everhart Chapter, MDSSAR will dedicate the grave site of Captain Peter Mantz on Sunday, June 28 at 3:00PM in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick Maryland. The cemetery is at the top of the hill on South Market Street approximately ½ mile north of I-70. The entrance is at the bottom right on the map below. The grave site is in Section E across from. Section C. 6
