Introduction CLP beregner is developed to guide the user labelling chemicals in accordance to EU regulation 1272/2008. The guide is a temporary version and we kindly ask the user to come along with some hassles in the system. We are continuing with improvements and the system will become better in upcoming releases. One disadvantage is f.x. that the program is only available in Danish. We believe that you will be able to make a classification using this manual. You should probably consult an English list with H- and P- sentences. The system requires some knowledge on CLP classification and one need to be critical to the results. If in doubt one should conferee with regulation 1272/2008. This guide is a help to get started with the system and is not a short course in CLP regulation. We recommend to join a course on CLP or read in the regulation. At AAU, KU, and SDU there are super users that can give directions on how to access the program and which rules comply on labelling at your University. The super users are: Aalborg Universitet; Barbara Samuelsen bas (at) adm.aau.dk Syddansk Universitet: Mogens T Jensen. mtj (at) sdu.dk Københavns Universitet: Maj-Britt Kryger Stærfeldt mbks (at) science.ku.dk og Ole Vendelbo olve (at) sund.ku.dk Danmarks Tekniske Universitet: kemibrug (at) dtu.dk Non-universities: kemibrug (at) dtu.dk Kemibrug kindly ask you to report errors and ideas for improvements. Please report the problems in a mail to our mailbox (kemibrug (at) dtu.dk and we will return with an answer as quick as possible. We cannot, however, promise to check if the calculator is giving the prober classification for every single mixture you make. 1. Initiate a CLP calculation Start the CLP calculation by visiting the website www.clpberegner.dk. The website is exclusive for Kemibrugs members. An access control is made on IP-adresses and therefore you can only get access to the calculator at your university. CLP beregner 5
2. Classification of a mixture To make a classification press Opret en CLP Beregning or You will need to type in all information on the chemicals as this version does not contact other databases to retrieve information. You will need to fill at least three boxes for each chemical in the mixture (stofnavn; mængde and densitet): Stofnavn = Name of the chemical. f.x. Reagens A, or Sodium Chloride, Sigma-Aldrich Mængde (g / ml / mol) = Amount. This is amount of the chemical in the mixture. If the composition is given in weight percentage (w/w %), you can select g as unit and simply type the percentages. If the composition is given in volume percentage (v/v %) choose ml and mol if the mixture is given in mol percentages. You can also type in a recipe in g directly. You do not have to recalculated it as percentages. The calculator only accepts g / ml / mol. If a substance in the recipe is given in mg you need to convert to g before entering data. Densitet = Density. This is density of the chemical, f.x. 1,0 for water and 0,79 for ethanol. The density is used to calculate the volume and therefor you should use the volumetric density and not the bulk density, (which includes the air trapped in the powder). Klassificering = Classification. The classification of the chemical is the H- sentences and it can f.x. be found on the datasheet or in the KBA from the Kemibrug database. You can add a classification by pressing the bottom: Registered substances can be found with ECHA (see example at page 7+8). You can open the ECHA web site directly by pressing: 6 CLP beregner
If EUH sentences should be included, you can add these under the single chemicals under Kemikalier. Be aware that the calculator will transfer these EUH senteses directly to the result. F.x. the EUH066 Gentagen kontakt kan give tør eller revnet hud will appear on the label even though only 0,01 % of the substance is present in the final mixture. Add a substance to the mixture To add a chemical to the mixture, press under the tab Kemikalie Dilution to an exact volume When you want to make a dilution to an exact volume use the bottom: This function will calculate the volume of all other substances in the mixture and calculate how much solvent is needed to reach the final volume that is typed in the box. Excess Volume, (if f.x. water and ethanol is mixed) is ignored in the calculation. Adding a certain amount If you need to add a certain amount say 100 ml, to the mixture, you should use Undo If you would like to undo a substance registration, a H-sentence or a specific concentration limit, you simply press the bottom: When all substances in a mixture is registered and you are ready to make the classification, press to make the calculation. CLP beregner 7
3. Editing a mixture If another value for a substance or a solvent is needed, select Kemikalie and choose the chemical or solvent, and make the correction. In the example below, is the classification of methanol added: In tab Kemikalie click on the substance to edit in order to expand the datasheet. Click tilføj if something should be added or edit any number in sheet. 4. Initialization The bottom erases all data and you can start on a clean sheet. 8 CLP beregner
5. Tab Produktblanding At the top of the page you will find three tabs (Kemikalie (= Chemical); Produktblanding (= mixture); Resultat (= Result)): In Produktblanding you are required to fill in the boiling point, flash point, ph value and physical appearance (fast (=solid), væske (=liquid), aerosol (=aerosol) or gas (=gas)). The fields are grey until a relevant H-sentence is used. F.x if H225 Meget brandfarlig væske og damp, is used a (2) will appear on the tab Produktblanding to indicate that data is requested: OBS! Be aware that this is the value for the mixture not for the single chemical. We do acknowledge that this can be difficult to know exactly. Regarding classification some more information can help. Category 1 is mixtures with flash point below 23 o C and the initial boiling point less than or equal to 35 o C. Category 2 covers mixtures with flash point less than 23 o C and boiling point above 35 o C Category 3 is mixtures with flash point between 23 o C and 60 o C. It does not matter how much lower or higher the temperature is. If the mixture is made of chemicals with boiling points higher than 40 o C it does not matter for the classification if the boiling point is 40 o C or 90 o C. If the temperature is above the limit with less than 3 o C, you can consider to classify the mixture in the more rigid class to safely compensate for uncertainties. CLP beregner 9
The system can choose a Standardværdi (=Standard value). This is the lowest temperature for the classification i.e. if a substance in the mixture is H225, then the flash point is set as 22 o C and the boiling point as 36 o C. Even though this can be far from reality. 10 CLP beregner
6. Tab Resultat The last tab is Resultat (=Result). In order to get a result one need to have press the calculate bottom: When a calculation has been made, one is directed to the tab Resultat and a timestamp on the tab appears. This timestamp is updated when a new calculation has been made: If one clicks on the tab before the calculation is made, this message will show: Here is no timestamp and message tells that there is no result. One can, however, continue to the label module to design a label without calculation. If the mixture does not require a classification, the message below is show and it is possible to continue to the label module to create a label without H- and P- sentences. Timestamp shows that a calculation is made and the text explains that the mixture is not covered by the EU regulation on classification. CLP beregner 11
7. Show the mixture in the calculation The substances in the mixture is summarized when pressing Data for the mixture is summarized without hazard sentences: 12 CLP beregner
8. Make a label without calculation It is possible to make a label without performing a calculation. OBS! Be aware that no check on the classification is made. It is possible to classify water as poison and flammable or Cadmium as completely harmless. You are responsible in this module. 8.1 Make a label Click: To get to Label generering In Label input is a series of fields to fill. These are really quite logical: Informationer om stoffet: Stofnavn: Name of the substance. CAS-nummer: CAS-no, batch no., or prod number. Fritekst: Text. Write owner, end-date or any other information. Information on label: In label skabelon is the label size selected. It is also here you can mark which labels on the page you want to print. CLP beregner 13
Information on classification: There are different boxes for Pictogram, H-, P- and EUH-sentences. Press to select a pictogram from the menu. When Tilføj is pressed a symbol or sentence can be selected. If you want to undo the selection, press Preview label: Press to open a new window with a picture of the label. Close the window to return to the label editor or generate a pdf-file with labels by pressing 14 CLP beregner
9. Example Classification of a mixture of Chloroform, 3-Iodobenzonic acid and 30 % Methanol Recipe: Mix 700 ml Chloroform and 50 g 3-iodobenzonic acid, fill up to 1000 ml with methanol Data: Data for the substances is found on the datasheet or internet: Chloroform 3-Iodobenzonic acid Methanol CAS-nr 67-66-3 618-51-9 67-56-1 Density (25 o C) 1,489 1,999 0,792 Flash point 158 o C 11 o C Boiling point 61,2 o C 329 o C 64,7 o C Search registered substances: Check if the substance is registered in ECHA: (http://echa.europa.eu/information-on-chemicals/clinventory-database) or simply click ECHA site opens in a new window. Click the link > CL Inventory CLP beregner 15
A search menu appears. A search for the substances can be done in different ways: Write the substance name in English or Write the CAS number Remember the checkmark, for searches only regarding substances with harmonized classification. 16 CLP beregner
Data from the harmonized list transferred to the CLP beregner : I find it most efficient to search on the CAS number, as the risk of spelling mistakes is less, but it is up to you: Chloroform: CAS-nr: 67-66-3 Only harmonized Search Select CLP beregner 17
Classification and specific concentration limits are transferred to the calculator. Press each time a new classification is added. Select which form H331 Acute Tox3 is addressing (dampe = vapour). 18 CLP beregner
Click on Tilføj kemikalie to add 3-iodobenzonic acid Check the registered substances: CAS-nr: 618-51-9 Only harmonized Search 3-iodobenzonic acid is not on the list and classification from Kemibrug or the MSDS is used: CLP beregner 19
20 CLP beregner
Select Tilføj solvent and repeat for methanol: Methanol Only harmonized Search Klik på det resultat, du skal bruge: Select CLP beregner 21
Classification is transferred to the CLP calculator Specific limits are transferred to the CLP calculator 22 CLP beregner
Boiling point and flash point is noted in the CLP calculator: At the top of the screen is written (2) in tab produktblanding and 2 felter ikke korrekt udfyldt (= 2 fields are not properly completed) top right. Click on the tab Produktblanding and complete the form I was told that the boiling point is about 53 o C and the flash point is ca. 32 o C: CLP beregner 23
Perform the CLP calculation: Now the input is done. Press Allow some time for calculation and the result will show: Usually the text is easier to read but due to the many sentences the font has become rather small. You might want to make a screen dump of this page to keep documentation for the classification. This version of the calculator cannot save nor print the results but that will be solved in a later release. It might be necessary to erase some of the P-sentences or to add EUH-sentences. This can be done in the label module. 24 CLP beregner
Make a label: Click to start the label module: Here it is possible to rearrange the succession of pictograms and H- and P-sentences. It is also here the label size is selected. Further is given the possibility to add or remove sentences or pictograms. Some P-sentences are marked with a red exclamation sign. Here it is possible to add a comment, such as which type of fire extinguisher to use. Press on the text in the dropdown menu or write you own, that fits with the mixture (you would probably benefit from some Danish help on this). Usually no more than 6 P-sentences are allowed, so pick some that can be excluded. Click to get a screenshot of the label: CLP beregner 25
Select label size (as big as the container allows) and how many labels should be printed. Then click on Edit the mixture If a dilution on the same chemicals should be made, press and make the changes. Press again to get the new classification.. 26 CLP beregner
