2 OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION Van Wert County Hospital (VWCH) is an independent, non-profit hospital and health system whose mission is to deliver high quality patient care across a continuum of services to over 70,000 people in rural west central Ohio. Located in Van Wert, Ohio, Van Wert County Hospital offers a comprehensive range of services to people of all ages, including inpatient hospital acute care services, outpatient surgery, ambulatory physician practices (Van Wert Medical Services), rehabilitation services (Therapy Solutions), obstetrics, diagnostic services, home care and hospice (VANCREST Health Care Centers), cancer services (The Cancer Network), and a full range of senior services. Specialties that Van Wert County Hospital offers are Emergency Services, Heart Center Medical Group, Intensive Care / Telemetry, Orthopedic Institute of Ohio, Specialty Clinic, Surgical Services and a Wellness Center. Key services include primary and specialty medical care, obstetrics, orthopedics, general surgery, oncology services, emergency services, rehabilitation and diagnostic services. The grand opening of a $6 million dollar Emergency Services expansion was held on June 28, 2010. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission, has approximately 800 employees, and a medical staff of 148 physicians. They are one of the top employers in the community, have a long history of strong financial performance, and have a strong ratio of cash to debt. For the future; the remaining areas of Emergency Services and 4th floor are planned renovations within the next several years at an estimated cost of 6-8 million dollars. Established in the early 1900's, the hospital has expanded to include state-of-the-art facilities and services for medical and surgical, obstetrical, pediatric and emergency care. The Van Wert Health Center houses Ambulatory Surgery, a Wellness Center, outpatient laboratory, radiology, and dialysis services, as well as physical and occupational rehabilitation. Numerous physician offices representing OB/GYN, orthopedics, family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, oncology, nephrology, cardiology, podiatry, physical medicine, and occupational health services are also available. VWCH continues to be a leader in strategic partnerships with the establishment of New Vision Medical Laboratories, a joint venture between VWCH and SRMC. In addition, The Ambulatory Surgery Center located in the Van Wert Health Center and The Sarah Jane

3 Living Center for Alzheimer s Care was opened in 2000. (Sarah Jane is a joint venture between VWCH and Vancrest Ltd). Technological improvements in 2011 included the remodeling and replacement of equipment in the medical imaging services department, a new 16 slice CT scanner as well as ultrasound technology was also updated. The surgical area received state-ofthe-art lighting in the operating suites also. Overall, more than 1.1 million dollars were spent on technological updates for the hospital in 2011. Values: We work together to establish and maintain: A caring environment Skilled and dedicated employees Advanced healthcare services Health for the body, mind and spirit OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION The Vice President of Nursing Services is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, delegating, and coordinating all nursing and related clinical services departments throughout Van Wert County Hospital. He/she will ensure that the safest and highest quality clinical services are provided within the facility. Other responsibilities include staff productivity, the development, interpretation and implementation of departmental measurable goals, budgets and long range plans, and the strategic development/leadership of the clinical/patient care services. This position will be accountable for the accomplishment of results and the achievement of objectives, consistent with the hospital/system mission, values and operational and strategic plans. The Vice President of Nursing Services will be responsible for inpatient clinical operations in: Nursing Departments Emergency Department FTEs 18.98 acute care including inpatient Surgical Services 24 medical/surgical/telemetry nursing, operating room/surgical Case Management 2.72 services, critical care services, emergency department, obstetrics/nursery, and case Critical Care/Telemetry/Step-Down Total FTEs 29.88 75 management. The Vice President of Nursing Services will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is a key member of the senior leadership team. 5 Staff Development Case Management/Social Services Key Responsibilities of the Position Define purpose, goals and objectives for nursing services and establish standards of care and standards of nursing practice. Work closely with the leadership team to assure they are informed and involved in areas of their responsibility. Ensure a high level of quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Serves as a professional role model for all patient care staff by staying abreast of new developments, programs and trends that may affect the organization. Educates staff members as to these changes and developments. Assist in the development of budgets, monitor fiscal integrity of nursing services, and evaluate and analyze cost-effectiveness of services, procedures or programs being offered at VWCH. Provides leadership and direction for all aspects of nursing, particularly service excellence, patient safety and quality initiatives. Develops positive working relationships with peers within the organization to ensure that all patient services areas function effectively as a team. Ensure that quality improvement activities are integrated within the nursing areas and ensure consistent standards of care, that patient safety is a high priority and culture. Facilitate the communication and exchange of information between staff, hospital resources and medical staff to enhance program growth and development. Assure that best practice standards are utilized premised on evidence-based research. Provide for continual development of staff through educational programs. Facilitate the creation of positive work environment for management, staff, and physicians. Works closely with the medical staff to ensure satisfaction with existing hospital services and clinical competence and responsiveness of nursing staff. Continues to build and promote a service-oriented culture based on dynamic organizational values and clinical integrity. Establishes high performance standards for service outcomes and patient satisfaction.

6 Proactively manages staff retention and recruitment. Ensures competence and job performance related to orientation, training, continuing education and counseling of staff. Coaches and develops department managers to work collaboratively across department lines and to standardize practices in order to support organizational excellence. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will possess the following experience, skills, values and personal characteristics: Education Bachelor s degree in nursing is required. Graduate degree (MHA, MBA, MSN, M.Ed., etc.) is preferred. Must hold or be eligible to hold a license as a registered nurse in the State of Ohio. Certification as a CNA or related/appropriate certification would be preferred. Experience The ideal candidate will currently be serving as a CNO/VP Patient Care in a similarly sized or slightly smaller hospital. Candidates with substantive nursing leadership experience in large/complex medical centers will also be considered. Candidates must have successful experience in creating a culture of management by measurable goals and accountability in a clinical setting. Candidates should possess seven to ten years of management experience in nursing leadership and over ten years in nursing/healthcare. Someone with experience in a nursing environment that has high patient satisfaction scores would be strongly preferred. Candidates must know the workings of the nursing/patient care unit inside and out, and possess an in-depth understanding of nursing departmental processes and patient flows. Someone with a proven track record in improving service, improving outcomes, and effectively managing/improving patient care/nursing processes. Experience with budgeting, finance, human resources, and planning for the department. A track record of developing a good rapport with physicians.

7 A successful track record of maintaining strong, positive relationships with medical staff and the administrative team. Experience with developing nursing leadership at the director level. An innovator who encourages change and excellence and has experience leading organizations committed to continuous quality improvement and outcomes based medicine. Possesses a sincere desire to mentor direct reports and nursing staff toward higher levels of excellence and demonstrated leadership ability. Practical experience as a clinical nurse early in career. Experience with staff recruitment, retention and development. Personal Characteristics A solid value system and service orientation and willingness to embrace the mission of Van Wert County Hospital which is to serve patients and their families. Sensitivity to the family-like aspects of the culture of the organization and a comfort level with integrating these attributes of the culture in planning for the future business of the departments. He/she will be someone who has a high level of personal ownership in the future success of the hospital in which they belong. They should be a strong advocate for the area and staff in which they lead. Has a high energy level with an assertive, straightforward can-do style and has a good sense of humor. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate will have a hands-on management style with a zest for day-to-day operations. He/she will also be results oriented in his/her approach to problem solving. Has a strong attention to detail and is self directed. Someone who is down to earth and has an approachable style that can work effectively with employees at all levels. This person must be highly credible from a clinical perspective. Must be able to earn the respect and trust of the staff and physicians with in the hospital. A team player that is insightful and reads interpersonal relationships well. Candidate must have excellent team building skills. Someone who values the mid-level manager and is energized by educating, inspiring and/or mentoring those managers. Must be comfortable in setting clear as well as high standards and then holding staff accountable to these standards.

8 The successful candidate will be results oriented in his/her approach to problem solving. He/she should have a passion for customer service and a commitment to service excellence. Has the highest level of honesty and integrity. Strong listening skills are necessary; candidates must be open to provide fresh, creative ideas and solutions. A clinician who values and understands the critical role of the nurse at the bedside in the creation of a healing environment for the patient. GOALS & OBJECTIVES During the first 12 to 24 months of his/her tenure, the Vice President of Nursing Services will be expected to achieve the following: Earn the trust and establish credibility among nursing leadership, staff, administration, and medical staff within Van Wert County Hospital. It is essential that the new Vice President be visible within the hospital. Become a respected and integral part of the administrative leadership team; develop a sense of personal ownership for the future success of the hospital and system. Assess the strengths and developmental needs of the directors/managers of the units. Develop a plan to further develop their abilities and mentor them to realize their full potential as managers. See that there is a culture of accountability among nursing leadership. Develop an understanding of the organization s culture and become a contributing member of the senior management team. Create a visible presence, by walking the halls, establishing a strong rapport with nurses, physicians and peers. Champion a Lean Management/Six Sigma approach that results in increased operational efficiencies and process improvements. Work collaboratively with the executive management team and others to improve quality care, patient safety and patient satisfaction by exceeding the 90% in Press Ganey Scores in nursing areas. Develop and expand the leadership capabilities of the Nursing Management team to more fully integrate the concepts of Cross Training and Clinical Integration. Analyze, review and implement staffing plans to achieve productivity standards.

9 Assess the existing primary care nursing delivery model. Put in place a plan/strategy to migrate to more of a team based model. Physicians will have a high degree of confidence in nursing leadership. Ensure an effective ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
