L.A.A.C. CATHOLIC COMMITTEE ON SCOUTING CATHOLIC BOY SCOUT CAMPOREE August 21 August 23, 2015 Adult Leader s Program Guide CAMPOREE THEME: PRAYER Hosted by: Don Bosco Technical Institute 1151 San Gabriel Blvd. Rosemead, CA 91770 THE LOS ANGELES AREA COUNCIL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE ON SCOUTING www.boyscoutsla.org

***Please read this Program Guide carefully, as it contains important information.*** OVERVIEW OF OUR PROGRAM We are extremely proud to offer your Scout Troop and Crew our 2 nd annual Catholic Boy Scout Camporee! This program is being hosted by our good friends at Don Bosco Technical Institute, located in the city of Rosemead. The Tech graciously offered us the use of their beautiful campus for our weekend Camporee and we cannot thank them enough for their generous contribution to our program. The camping area that we will use is a large grassy area, affectionately known at Bosco as The Mall. Other areas of the campus that we will use (such as classrooms, bathrooms, eating area, ) will be clearly marked. The theme for our Camporee is Prayer. During our small-group sessions and presentations, we will explore the five different types of prayer: Prayer of Thanksgiving, Prayer of Petition, Prayer of Praise, Prayer of Intercession, and Prayer of Blessing and Adoration. Because of the unique nature of this program, we can accommodate only 200 Boy Scouts, Crew members and their adult leaders. So, we strongly recommend that you register your Unit A.S.A.P.; we expect our Catholic Camporee to quickly become a sold out event. Please be aware that this program has been specifically designed for members of the Catholic Faith. Additionally, this program is open only to Scouts and Crews from the Los Angeles Area Council (L.A.A.C.). As a Scouting event, each Unit is expected to adhere to all Boy Scout guidelines. This means, for example, two registered adult leaders for every Unit. WHAT TO BRING Each Unit should bring its own tents. Each participant should bring, for example, his/her own sleeping bag, camp pillow, toothbrush & paste, camp chair, water bottle, and flashlight. We will provide for you all of the meals as well as a fun, thought-provoking program! WHAT NOT TO BRING Please do not bring any electronic toys or music devices. We expect all Scouts to be so busy participating in the Camporee events that they simply will not have the time for anything else. Cellphones are allowed but are to be kept out of sight (in your pocket) and placed in silent mode during the Camporee events; texting, listening to music, making phone calls, during our program will not be tolerated. Failure to follow this rule will result in the cellphone being confiscated and it will be turned over to the Scoutmaster for safe keeping. ACCESS & PARKING All vehicles are to be parked in the gated parking lot that is located adjacent to Bosco Tech s main entrance, on San Gabriel Blvd. Follow the signs to the Registration Area. For security reasons, the parking lot will be locked after the scheduled check-in times on Friday and Saturday. You will not have access to your vehicle after that, so please be sure to unload all the gear that you will need for the weekend. Upon arrival, present your REGISTRATION Forms(s) showing names and scouting status (School grade, age, Scouter, ) of all members of your Unit(s) and have available for inspection your MEDICAL RELEASES and TOUR PERMIT/TROOP PERMIT APPLICATION. Please utilize the new Boy Scout medical form. At registration, the unit leader will need to turn in one copy of the permission slip for each and every Scout to the registrar, keeping one with the unit leader. The parking lot will be unlocked at the end of the Camporee. Be sure to patrol your campsite (remember: Leave No Trace) and have your Check-Out Form signed by the Camporee Staff before your Unit leaves. 2

REGISTRATION AND PERMISSION SLIPS On the attached registration form, please list the name of each person attending, Youth as well as adults. For your convenience, a copy of the Medical Release and Parent s Permission Slip is enclosed. You need one for each Youth. Please have them completely filled out and signed by the minor s parent or guardian. There are two copies on a page. One will be turned in at registration and will be given to the small group facilitator. The other copy must be kept in the unit leader s possession at all times: while en route to, present at and returning from the Catholic Boy Scout Camporee. For additional copies, you may reproduce the one enclosed. TOUR PLANS/TROOP TRIP APPLICATIONS This is NOT a council event. The Los Angeles Catholic Committee on Scouting has arranged for a location for the Catholic Boy Scout Camporee. All Troops attending must file a TOUR PLAN. Only Boy Scout Troops and Crews from the Los Angeles Area Council will be allowed to register and participate in this Camporee. Insurance coverage (travel, accident, etc.) as in any non-council or non-district sponsored event, is that carried by the Scout family, unit and local Council. Registration Options There are three simple ways that your Unit can register for our Camporee, but only the first method rewards you for planning ahead. 1. Early Bird Registration If your completed registration packet (that is, registration form(s) and appropriate fee) is postmarked before 06/24/15, you will pay only $20 per Scout and ONE ADULT LEADER WILL BE REGISTERED FOR FREE!! Additional adults will pay only $20 each. THIS IS AN UNBEATABLY GREAT DEAL!!! 2. Regular Registration For registration packets postmarked between 06/25/15 and 07/28/15, your Troop will pay $25/participant (this fee applies to all Scouts as well as all adults). SORRY, NO FREE ADULT LEADER!! 3. On-Site Registration For On-site registration and registration packets postmarked after 07/29/2015, your Troop will pay $30/participant (this fee applies to all Scouts as well as all adults). SORRY, NO FREE ADULT LEADER!! PLEASE NOTE: On-Site Registrants are not guaranteed an event patch or other goodies. For this reason, we strongly suggest that your Troop do Early Bird registration. Check-In Your Unit should arrive on Friday, August 21 between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM, or on Saturday, August 22 between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM. But, please be aware that only early arrivals on Friday will get a special treat!!! See Early Bird check-in, below for details. At check-in, the Unit Leader will be issued a packet containing: 1. A copy of this Adult Leader s Guide. This document contains important Camporee information; please be sure to read it cover-to-cover. 2. One wrist band per registered participant. The wrist band will serve to identify those Scouts and adults that are participating in our Camporee. PLEASE HAVE ALL SCOUTS & ADULTS IN YOUR UNIT PLACE A WRISTBAND ON THEIR RIGHT WRIST IMMEDIATELY. IT SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED UNTIL THE END OF THE CAMPOREE. Individuals without a wristband (no matter what the reason) will not be allowed to participate in our program and will be asked to either: (a) purchase a wristband for $30.00 or, (b) leave the Camporee Site immediately. Lost or missing wristband will be replaced after paying a $30.00 replacement fee. Please guard you wristband to avoid having to pay a replacement fee. 3

3. Participant raffle tickets. We have a limited number of raffle tickets that will be issued at check-in, one per participant, on a first-come, first served basis. Raffles will be held throughout the Camporee weekend so hang on to your ticket and good luck!! 4. Unit raffle ticket. Each Scout is asked to bring two canned food items. These will be collected at check-in. Units with 100% Scout participation will be entered into a special Unit Raffle. This raffle will be held immediately after the Opening Ceremony, on Saturday morning. Once the Unit Leader has completed the check-in process, a Camporee Program Leader will walk with your Unit to the camping area and will explain where your tents are to be pitched. After your campsite is setup, review the calendar section of the Adult Leader s Guide to see where and when your next activity will be held. Early Bird Check-In Units that check-in on Friday, August 21 between the hours of 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM will be considered Early Birds. After they set-up their campsite, they will be rewarded with dinner, popcorn and a movie!!! We strongly encourage all Units to arrive early and join the fun!!! ADULT LEADER S CRACKER BARREL There will be a leaders meeting at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday at the Camporee Administration Area (C.A.A.). This meeting is for Adult Leaders only. It is very important that representatives from all Units attend. We will review last minute changes to our program. There will be a second Cracker Barrel on Saturday at 10 p.m. Sunday s program will be discussed. PROGRAM NOTES All Scouts and Scouters are required to be in Class A uniform. Because Mass, Benediction, and assemblies are scattered throughout the day, uniforms are requested for both Saturday and Sunday. Jackets, of course, are optional, depending on the weather. ***All Scouts and Scouters are expected to participate fully in all program activities.*** No one is to be in the campsite areas during the program time. If a parent needs to pick up a Scout during the program, they are to report to the C.A.A.. The Unit Leader will be located, and the Unit Leader along with a member of the Camporee staff will locate the Scout. They will bring the Scout back to the C.A.A. for release to the parent. Please inform parents that Scouts are expected to attend all activities. All units are invited to participate in the campfire on Saturday evening. Groups must see the Campfire leader during the day on Saturday to have their skit or song approved and put on the schedule. MISCELLANEOUS Each Unit will be responsible for policing its own area as well as helping to keep the entire Camporee area clean. We will provide each Troop with trash bags to collect whatever rubbish you generated. REMEMBER: Leave No Trace! Because of the fire danger, there will be no smoking allowed. No alcoholic beverages or non-prescribed controlled drugs will be permitted. No radios, portable TV s stereos, walkmans, record players, ipods, etc., or unauthorized musical instruments. All Scouts must use the designated Scouts Only restrooms. Adults must use the Adults Only restrooms. This is to ensure compliance with BSA Youth Protection policies regarding bathrooms. Lost and Found location is at C.A.A. Report all injuries to the First Aid area (in the C.A.A.) whether or not the injury is treated by the Unit s first aid. 4
