Because of the unique support and encouragement they receive from mentors, youth build self-esteem and decision-making skills that affect them for life. For example, 100% of youth involved in our mentoring program say they are able to refuse using alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs (Internal survey, Fall 2013). My mentor travels a lot for her work. She calls me just to see how I am doing. She also sends me postcards. When I get them, my day can be turned around, because if I am having a bad day and I receive her postcard, I feel so good. Every child benefits from having a trusted adult, and the bowling fundraiser makes this possible by bringing in funds to connect role models with local youth. Due to the recent end of federal funding sources, we are striving to raise BIG FUNDS to cover expenses and keep the mission going. The BIG MENTORING BOWL-A-THON is March 22, 2014 at Oneota Lanes in Decorah. It is of BIG IMPORTANCE to get BIG COMMUNITY SUPPORT to continue making a BIG POSITIVE IMPACT on local kids, families, and communities. You are invited to this fun time of bowling. We re seeking teams from local businesses, civic groups, families, and circles of friends. Please consider registering a team and bowling at Oneota Lanes on Saturday, March 22. Bowling times are at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Join with other generous members of the community in collecting donations for this local program. Bowlers are asked to raise at least $50 per person. That Saturday, bowl, enjoy great food, meet mentees and mentors you re supporting, and gather with others who believe that mentoring positively impacts the future of our youth. Deadline for registration to bowl is Friday, March 14. If you re unable to bowl please consider donating to this worthy cause by giving a donation for mentoring to a team member or through our secure website, www.helpingservices.org/mentoring.

Thunder Rode Ride The website below is a link to details and sign-up for our ride on March 22, 2014, beginning and ending at Randy's Bluffton Store. https://www.actha.us/ride/6888/view There are five classes to choose from and people do NOT have to be a member to participate. However, if the person is not a member, they will not receive an ACTHA score for that day's competition. Scout non-members will receive an unofficial score for that day and a prize for first place. Buddy riders can not do the obstacles and will be put in a drawing for a prize at the end of the day. The ride is eight miles long and there are six obstacles for the competition. This is not about speed between obstacles, it's about how well the rider and horse work through the obstacles. It's a fun challenge and will benefit Thunder Rode. Chili will be served from the Bluffton Store and the chili proceeds also go to Thunder Rode. There will be an official awards ceremony, the same day, following the competition after the results are compiled. The first six places for Open, Pleasure, Junior and Scout member will receive ribbons and prizes from ACTHA and Thunder Rode (donated by Michelle McLain-Kruse). Please come and have fun!
