Long-standing bone research at the University of Eastern Finland has produced expertise that underlies a new, fast and economical way of diagnosing osteoporosis. The innovation has been commercialised by Bone Index Ltd, managed by Ossi Riekkinen, whose goal is to enter global markets with its ultrasound-based Bindex measuring method The Bindex device, weighing little more than 100 grams, and the computer program that analyses the results will bring osteoporosis screening within the reach of every healthcare centre and private medical centre. The procedure for both the testee and the tester is easy and fast, whereas the usual current method of diagnosing osteoporosis is a pelvic X-ray performed in a hospital.

Most of the practical training is conducted on the 38-hectar-wide training ground. There are different kinds of training fields, specialpurpose buildings and class rooms there. The students train in conditions as close as possible to real emergencies, for example, to extinguish various kinds of fires, to carry out rescue assignments, prevent chemical accidents, driving emergency vehicles as well as giving first aid to injured and ill patients. The training ground is also used for joint disaster exercises of the authorities. The training ground has been designed to minimize the effects on the environment. It can also be used by organisations arranging safety training.
It s all about collaboration and co-creation

Jukka Sormunen, an entrepreneur and the Principal of Klassikka upper seconday high school in Kuopio, is developing health-promoting ActionTrack playing fields for schools at iclass Finland Education Network Ltd. Through the exercise- and health-oriented playing fields, support can be provided for the educational partnership between home and school. Through a game, pupils are guided to, say, brush their teeth. Parents can monitor the game, confirming on the game platform, with a mobile device, that the teeth have been brushed. In this way, interaction in a young person s education takes place through modern terminal devices, and responsibility is not left to the old civics classes.
Heli Vehkala, the Project Manager at Neuron, the Finnish Brain Research and Rehabilitation Centre, thinks that current terminal devices hold enormous business potential. Public and private healthcare services will not be able to cope with future pressures. There is a global need for different kinds of telerehabilitation and telecare models. Gamification, the application of games for health promotion and maintenance, will save money on many counts. An individual s functional capacity will improve with smaller personnel resources than today. Increasing well-being will save society money.
