January News 2015 About the Sumner Senior Center SUMNER SENIOR CENTER Welcome to the Sumner Senior Center. The activities and services of the Center are available to anyone 55 years of age and older. If you are looking for a Senior Center that offers positive changes, wonderful instructors, social interaction and personal training, then our Center is the place for you. Here at the Sumner Senior Center we take pride in assisting you with all the best possible resources we can. We offer an array of different activities and amenities that we think will benefit you not only today, but down the road. Please feel free to inquire about any of the resources that we are currently offering. We welcome your suggestions. CLOSURE: The Center will be closed New Year's Day Thursday, 1/1/15 and on Monday, 1/19/15 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Trips include: Muckelshoot Casino on the 8th, Red Wind Casino on the 22nd, and LeMay Car Museum trip on the 29th sign up in the Activities Book. Join us for laughter therapy with Kirsten McDowall on the 20th! Fyi: Beyond the Borders Bus, NOW goes to Winco the 2nd Monday of each month. The bus leaves the Center at 1:15pm. If you are 55 years of age and have not visited the Center or taken advantage of the activities already scheduled, we invite you to please stop in to see our welcoming facility. Come in and Work out!! Hearing Aid Checks Thank you, Sound Hearing for providing this free service of checking & cleaning hearing aids for our seniors. Date: January 9th Time: 11am Noon Please sign up in the Activities Book! Massage Therapy Reduce pain and stiffness. Get your monthly massage at the Center. Days: Mon., 1/5 & 1/26 Time: 1-3:30 pm Cost: $10 for 15 min. Sign up! Bring a Book-Take a Book Library! The library is self-serve. Participants are welcome to three books per visit. Please return books and donated books to the basket located in the library for our library volunteer to reshelve in proper order. 2

It s guaranteed you will have a good time and even tap your toes! Day: Thursdays Time: 10am- 12pm Tai Chi Come try Tai Chi. It reduces the effects of arthritis, lowers blood pressure and improves balance. Days: Thursdays Time: 8:30am Cost: FREE SilverSneakers Classic Improve strength, flexibility, posture and balance. Exercise at your own pace. Get fit!! Free with SilverSneakers membership OR pay $3 the drop in fee. Days: Monday/Thursday Time: 2:00 3:00pm Gentle Yoga Join Barbara a Registered Yoga Trainer for a relaxing yoga and meditation class. We will be stretching, strengthening, lengthening and meditating. Days: Wednesdays Time: 9:00-10:00am SilverSneakers Circuit Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a Silver- Sneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises. Day: Tuesdays Time: 2:00-3:00pm

Announcements & Information SENIOR CORNER Helen Odman: Helen was born in Dubois, Pennsylvania in 1925. In 1962 her family moved to Pacific, WA in search of work. Over the years Helen was married & widowed in 1990. They raised 3 children who gave them at least 6 grandchildren, 3 or 4 great-grands, 1 great-great grandson & 1 great-great grand niece born on her birthday. She met her 2nd husband in 1991 adding 3 step-children to her family. She was widowed again in 2005. After her children were in school, she enrolled in and graduated from the first ever LPN Nursing class at Green River College. She worked at Auburn Hospital retiring in 1982 and continued to work in several area nursing homes. Hobbies: Helen enjoys TV, crocheting, knitting, sewing and messing around with her plants. She also greatly enjoys time spent with her little dog, Rocky (8 lbs. of dynamite!) Senior Center Member: Helen joined the SSC 30 years ago when it was housed in the Sumner Library, volunteering here and there. Favorite Memory: She has fond memories of volunteering at a sale and having a good time with the other volunteers. Mt. Valley Art Club, Artist of the Month!
