Many buildings were financed directly by business owners or residents, who would offset building costs with lease income from unused spaces. These self-developing streetscapes ensured that no single developer or architect controlled the evolution of the city. It would reflect a social, shared history instead. LEVERAGE SMALL INVESTMENTS // The SHARE WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS // The typical traditional urban building is between 20 to 40 feet wide, and between 60 to 200 feet deep. This small width was a product of structural engineering limitations. A traditional building with masonry walls and wooden floors could not span further without significant cost increases, and tax policies often charged by street frontage instead of square footage. The result was small frontages and deep buildings. party wall style of building, where adjacent buildings used the same structural wall to support their floors, was a very important money saving technique in traditional buildings. From the dawn of human civilization we have been building cities by slowly adding onto the existing structures. However, new construction codes that strictly regulate fire safety have eliminated this technique, and for all intents and purposes party walls are no longer in common use. Every building is now an independent structure. Have you ever been to an old downtown and marveled at the historic buildings? Have you ever wondered how they could create such beautiful buildings on such small budgets, compared to the placeless architecture we are told is barely affordable today? The overall effect of a traditional streetscape is like walking through a wellcurated art exhibit, where people can admire the buildings or the products in the glass storefronts. The density of different buildings and stores satisfies the pedestrian s need for visual interest. It is a key part of what we call walkability. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Wayne Hollingshead The Beautiful Downtown Lewiston Board of Directors are tasked with responsibility for the organization s vision, administration, and finances. Wayne Hollingshead has been an essential part of the BDL Board over the last several years. He is a strong leader with great vision for our downtown district and the knowledge and determination to make things happen. Wayne planting along Main Street during Refresh the Valley, 2012. Wayne retired at the end of December 2012 from his career at the Lewiston Tribune where he was General Manager. Though he is now retired, he has agreed to stay on the BDL Board of Directors and the Design Committee, a group a chaired in from 2010-2012. He has also served on the Streetscape Design Initiative committee (which helped select the various public art elements installed on First and Fifth Streets) and is a regular at downtown service events such as Refresh the Valley and Decorate Downtown. Downtown Lewiston is important to our community and the valley a as a whole, says Wayne. Being part of the positive changes that are taking place is exciting. BDL is a great example of a public/private partnership as we work with the city, the college, the library and local businesses to make downtown Lewiston a more vibrant and inviting place to live, work and recreate. FREE ENERGY EVALUATIONS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES The Idaho Small Business Development Center in conjunction with the University of Idaho Sustainability Center are offering cost free energy evaluations for small businesses in the Lewiston area. The evaluation is designed to give you an understanding of your energy usage relative to businesses of similar industry and size in the northwest. The program employs student interns through the University of Idaho and provides them with credit toward their degrees. Two student interns preform each evaluation which take between 1-2 hours. Refresh, Rethink, Renew, Refurbish will focus on land just west of Lewis Clark Recyclers, between C Street and Beachy Street. This area is being referred to as the Luna House Museum Campus. The students began their project with a tour by Mark Armstrong (photo right) in mid-january, and a week later held a community conversation workshop in Lewiston to garner ideas, historical stories, and vision from the public. Throughout the semester the students will work in pairs to create a plan for the currently unused spaces of the property. Their plan will be presented to the owner and community in April. VALLEY DESTINATION 2040 SURVEY Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) are entities designated by federal law with the lead responsibility for developing the area's transportation plans and coordinating the transportation planning process. The Lewis-Clark Valley MPO Long Range Transportation Plan ( Valley Destination 2040 ) is the federally required long-range (20+year) strategy and capital improvement program developed to guide the effective investment of public funds in multi modal transportation facilities for the metropolitan planning organization area. COMMITTEE COMMENTS Organization is pursuing a change in non-profit status from a 501 (c)6 to a 501(c)3, which will allow BDL members and sponsors to list their generous contributions as tax-deductible. The committee is also planning BDL s first fundraiser event for Feb. 2013. Thank you to Carolyn Radakovich for taking on the role of Committee Chair for 2013. Economic Restructuring is pursuing follow-up information and visits with property owners in the downtown corridor. Regional businesses have been visited and given information about opportunities in downtown Lewiston; follow-up contacts are now being made. Design is working on various projects, including sprucing up the informational kiosk at the Historic District Parking Lot on D Street and designing and securing funds for welcoming banners to be hung from the new light poles on Fifth Street. Thank you to Mike Cannon for taking on the role of Committee Chair for 2013. Promotions has recently conducted a survey to downtown businesses regarding special event impact and impressions. Using that information, and recommendations from staff and board of directors, the committee has made some exciting decisions about the 2013 Calendar of Events.
